Experiments were designed to obtain evidence about the possible role of xanthophylls as abscisic acid (ABA) precursors in water-stressed leaves of Phaseolus vularis L. Leaves were exposed to 14CO2 and the specific activities of several major leaf xanthophylls and stress-induced ABA were determined after a chase in 12CO2 for varying periods of time. The ABA specific radioactivities were about 30 to 70% of that of lutein and violaxanthin regardless of the chase period. The specific activity of neoxanthin, however, was only about 15% of that of ABA. The effects of fluridone on xanthophyll and ABA levels and the extent of labeling of both from 14CO2 were determined. Fluridone did not inhibit the accumulation of ABA when leaves were stressed once, although subsequent stresses in the presence of fluridone did lead to a reduced ABA accumulation. The incorporation of 14C from 14CO2 into ABA and the xanthophylls was inhibited by fluridone and to about the same extent. The incorporation of 18O into ABA from violaxanthin which had been labeled in situ by means of the violaxanthin cycle was measured. The results indicated that a portion of the ABA accumulated during stress was formed from violaxanthin which had been labeled with 18O. The results of these experiments are consistent with a preformed xanthophyll(s) as the major ABA precursor in water-stressed bean leaves. 相似文献

Summary The efficiency and balance of nitrogen from one year's application was studied in a long-term fertigation experiment. Enriched
nitrogen fertilizer, K15NO3, was applied to a 22-year-old Shamouti orange tree with a history of high N applications (N3) and to an N-starved tree (N1). The distribution of N in the different parts of the trees and in the soil was determined after the experimental trees were
excavated.
Similar total recovery of the labeled fertilizer N was found in the trees and soil in both treatments (N1−61.7% N3−56%). However, the distribution between tree and soil was different. The amount of recovered residual fertilizer in the soil
was much larger in the N3 treatment than in N1. The highest percentage of fertilizer N was found in the new organs,i.e. fruits, twigs and leaves. The roots and branches took up only 6–14% from the labeled fertilizer.
Only 20.9% of the leaf N and 23.4% of the fruit N in the N3 tree originated in the labeled fertilizer, indicating translocation of N from older parts of the tree to new growth.
Evidence was found of storage of N in the wooded branches, while the roots contained a surprisingly small part of labeled
fertilizer.

Summary ThePhysarum plasmodium shows rhythmic contractile activities with a period of a few min. Phases of the oscillation in the plasmodium migrating unindirectionally agreed sideways throughout at the frontal part. So, time course of an intracellular chemical component was determined by analyzing small pieces cut off successively from the frontal part of the large plasmodium. Intracellular NAD(P)H concentration oscillated with the same period as the rhythmic contraction but with a different phase advancing about 1/3 of the period. UV irradiation suppressed the rhythmic contraction without affecting the rhythmic variation of NAD(P)H. Thus, the NAD(P)H oscillator works independently of the rhythmic contractile system, but seems entraining with each other.Abbreviations UV

Stable monolayers of contact-inhibited C3H 10T1/2 cells were used in multifraction radiation experiments to measure the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) at low doses/fraction under conditions where cell cycle effects (repopulation, redistribution) were minimal. Consistent with there being a dose-dependent reduction in the OER at low doses, an extremely low OER of 1.34 was measured after 20 fractions of 1.7 Gy every 12 h. The sparing effects of fractionating radiation doses were not apparent for cells irradiated under hypoxic conditions (i.e., multifraction survivals were lower than acute single-dose values) until doses exceeding 15 Gy were reached. This result suggested a deficiency in the recovery from sublethal and/or potentially lethal damage might exist after hypoxic irradiations, thereby reducing the OER. The capacity to repair potentially lethal damage was found to be nearly the same after hypoxic as compared to aerobic irradiations. However, there was an apparent absence of sublethal damage repair by 10T1/2 cells between two hypoxic irradiations which could be a major contributing factor to the extremely low OER value measured in this multifraction schedule. 相似文献

Radioprotective efficiency of gas hypoxic mixtures (GHM) containing 5-12% of oxygen and the rate of the reaction of succinate dehydrogenase (VSDG) activity in peripheral blood lymphocytes upon breathing GHM were comparatively studied in rats and dogs. VSDG was 4393.5 (%O2)-2.58 and 130.76 (%O2)-1.42 in dogs and rats respectively.
