Intracerebroventricular cannulation in rat models is an efficient tool for exploring the effects of substances directly injected into the CNS, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. Techniques for surgically securing the ICV cannula require a balance between ease of application and adequate stability. The authors tested several methods of lateral ventricle cannula stabilization, especially focusing on a comparison of cyanoacrylate gel to cranioplastic cement with an anchoring bone screw.  相似文献

Whilst Candida albicans occurs in peri-implant biofilms, its role in peri-implantitis remains unclear. This study therefore examined the virulence of C. albicans in mixed-species biofilms on titanium surfaces. Biofilms of C. albicans (Ca), C. albicans with streptococci (Streptococcus sanguinis, S. mutans) (Ca-Ss-Sm) and those incorporating Porphyromonas gingivalis (Ca-Pg and Ca-Ss-Sm-Pg) were developed. Expression of C. albicans genes associated with adhesion (ALS1, ALS3, HWP1) and hydrolytic enzymes (SAP2, SAP4, SAP6, PLD1) was measured and hyphal production by C. albicans quantified. Compared with Ca biofilms, significant (p<0.05) up-regulation of ALS3, HWP1, SAP2 and SAP6, and hyphal production occurred in biofilms containing streptococci (Ca-Ss-Sm). In Ca-Pg biofilms, down-regulation of HWP1 and SAP4 expression, with reduced hyphal production occurred. Ca-Ss-Sm-Pg biofilms had increased hyphal proportions and up-regulation of ALS3, SAP2 and SAP6. In conclusion, C. albicans expressed virulence factors in biofilms that could contribute to peri-implantitis, but this was dependent on associated bacterial species.  相似文献

Algorithmic models have been proposed to explain adaptive behavior of bone to loading; however, these models have not been applied to explain the biomechanics of short dental implants. Purpose of present study was to simulate bone remodeling around single implants of different lengths using mechanoregulatory tissue differentiation model derived from the Stanford theory, using finite elements analysis (FEA) and to validate the theoretical prediction with the clinical findings of crestal bone loss. Loading cycles were applied on 7-, 10-, or 13-mm-long dental implants to simulate daily mastication and bone remodeling was assessed by changes in the strain energy density of bone after a 3, 6, and 12 months of function. Moreover, clinical findings of marginal bone loss in 45 patients rehabilitated with same implant designs used in the simulation (n = 15) were computed to validate the theoretical results. FEA analysis showed that although the bone density values reduced over time in the cortical bone for all groups, bone remodeling was independent of implant length. Clinical data showed a similar pattern of bone resorption compared with the data generated from mathematical analyses, independent of implant length. The results of this study showed that the mechanoregulatory tissue model could be employed in monitoring the morphological changes in bone that is subjected to biomechanical loads. In addition, the implant length did not influence the bone remodeling around single dental implants during the first year of loading.  相似文献

The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), is primarily found associated with human structures such as wheat and rice mills. Such structures are predicted to be spatially isolated resource patches with frequent population bottlenecks that should influence their genetic structure. Genetic diversity and differentiation among nine populations of T. castaneum collected from wheat and rice mills (ranging from <1-5,700 km apart) were investigated using eight polymorphic loci (microsatellites and other insertion-deletion polymorphisms, each with 3-14 alleles). Seventy-two locus-by-population combinations were evaluated, of which 31 deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, all because of a deficiency of heterozygotes. AMOVA analysis indicated significant differences among populations, with 8.3% of the variation in allele frequency resulting from comparisons among populations, and commodity type and geographic region not significant factors. Although there were significant differences in genetic differentiation among populations (F(ST) values = 0.018-0.149), genetic distance was not significantly correlated with geographic distance. Correct assignment to the source population was successful for only 56% of individuals collected. Further analyses confirmed the occurrence of recent genetic bottlenecks in five out of nine populations. These results provide evidence that populations of T. castaneum collected from mills show spatial genetic structure, but the poor ability to assign individuals to source populations and lack of isolation by distance suggest greater levels of gene flow than predicted originally.  相似文献

Variation in environmental and physical factors within food processing facilities can influence both the distribution of stored-product pests and trapping efficiency. Data from a long-term Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) monitoring program was used to evaluate spatial variation in captures among trap locations and to determine relationships with environmental and physical variables. From the complete monitoring data set, different subsets were created for the cool and warm seasons, and period of time when environmental and physical factors were measured (2009-2010), with all data sets showing significant differences among trap locations in terms of beetle captures and proportion of time that traps exceeded 2.5 beetles per trap per monitoring period. There was also considerable temporal variation in distribution among the different levels of the mill. Among the environmental and physical variables measured, mean temperature and flour dust accumulation showed the most significant positive relationships with variation of beetle captures at trap locations. More beetles were captured in traps located in close proximity to milling equipment. Presence of equipment near traps was also associated with an increase in flour dust accumulation and temperature. Overall the environmental and physical factors seemed to have a limited influence on variation in captures among trap locations, with temporal variation in distribution perhaps overwhelming potential influences of local trap conditions.  相似文献

Effect of double flasking and investing methods on artificial teeth movement in complete dentures processing Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate linear dimensional alterations of artificial teeth for complete dentures when using different investment and flasking techniques. Background: Dimensional changes in the vertical dimension may occur owing to changes in artificial teeth positioning caused by different investing and flasking techniques. Materials and methods: Thirty pairs of the complete dentures were manufactured and randomly divided into three groups (n = 10): (1) invested with type III stone in monomaxillary PVC flask; (2) invested with type III stone in bimaxillary PVC flask; and (3) invested with laboratory silicone in bimaxillary PVC flask. Dentures were polymerised by microwave, and 12 linear distances were measured before and after denture processing. Data were analysed by one‐way anova , considering manufacturing technique as the study factor. Tukey’s HSD was used as post hocanova (p = 0.05). Results: Most of the linear distances were comparable for all groups. All transversal maxillary and mandibular distances were higher for group 1 compared with groups 2 and 3 (p < 0.05), except the distance 3–6 for mandibular arch, in which no difference was found between groups (p < 0.05). Both maxillary diagonal distances were higher in group 1 (p < 0.05), and no differences were found among all groups for mandibular measurements. Conclusions: Double flasking technique independent on the investment material is shown to be the most effective method to reduce changes in artificial teeth positioning.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify, quantify, and determine the importance of biological control agents of the psyllid Triozoida limbata (Enderlein) (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Triozidae). Ecological life tables were developed during four periods to determine the critical stage and key mortality factors of this pest. Predation and parasitism were found to be the two major factors driving the population dynamics of this pest. The major predators of eggs and nymphs of first and second instars were coccinellids, predatory thrips, lacewings, ants, and spiders, while the major predators of third, fourth, and fifth instars were several species of predatory wasps and syrphids. The endoparasitoid Psyllaephagus sp. (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) parasitized fifth instar psyllids. The fifth instar was found to be the critical mortality stage of T. limbata, and key mortality factors include the parasitoid Psyllaephagus sp. and predatory wasps.  相似文献

Background: The microwave energy is an efficient disinfection method; however, it can generate high temperatures that can result in distortion of the dentures. objectives: To evaluate whether the addition of an enzymatic cleanser to microwave disinfection regimen would disinfect dentures with shorter irradiation time. Materials and methods: Seven resin discs colonized with Candida albicans biofilm were placed on the palatal surface of sterile dentures to be randomly assigned to the following treatments: immersion in distilled water for 3 min with 0 (DW), 1 (DW + M1), 2 (DW + M2), or 3 min (DW + M3) of microwave irradiation; or immersion in denture cleanser for 3 min with 0 (DC), 1 (DC + M1), 2 (DC + M2) or 3 min (DC + M3) of irradiation. After the treatments, the viable cells were counted by a blinded examiner. The temperature was measured immediately after irradiation. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (α = 0.05). Results: No viable cells were found after DC + M2, DC + M3, and DW + M3 treatments, of which DC + M2 achieved the lowest temperature. No significant difference was found between the effectiveness of DW, DW + M1 and DC treatments (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, the association of a denture cleanser and microwave energy is efficient to disinfect dentures in lower irradiation time and temperature.  相似文献

Access to antivenoms is not guarranteed for vulnerable populations that inhabit remote areas in the Amazon. The study of therapeutic itineraries (TI) for treatment of snakebites would support strategies to provide timely access to users. A TI is the set of processes by which individuals adhere to certain forms of treatment, and includes the path traveled in the search for healthcare, and practices to solve their health problems. This study aims to describe TIs of snakebite patients in the Brazilian Amazon. This study was carried out at the Fundação de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado, in Manaus, state of Amazonas, Brazil. The itinerary from the moment of the bite to the patient’s admission to the reference unit was analyzed. Sample size was defined by saturation. After an exploratory survey to collect epidemiological variables, in-depth interviews were conducted following a semi-structured guide. Patients originated from rural areas of 11 different municipalities, including ones located >500 kilometers from Manaus. A great fragmentation was observed in the itineraries, marked by several changes of means of transport along the route. Four themes emerged from the analysis: exposure to snakebite during day-to-day activities, use of traditional therapeutic practices, and personal perception of the severity, as well as the route taken and its contingencies. Access to healthcare requires considerable effort on the part of snakebite patients. Major barriers were identified, such as the low number of hospitals that offer antivenom treatment, poor access to healthcare due to long distances and geographic barriers, low acceptability of healthcare offered in countryside, lack of use of personal protective equipment, common use of ineffective or deleterious self-care practices, late recognition of serious clinical signs and resistance to seeking medical assistance. Health education, promotion of immediate transport to health centers and decentralization of antivenom from reference hospitals to community healthcare centers in the Brazilian Amazon are more effective strategies that would to maximize access to antivenom treatment.  相似文献
