The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to living organisms. Accumulation of these compounds has been known to cause significant gill damage and loss of sight in fish. Alteration of physiological and biochemical parameters of water decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen and thus affecting the entire ecosystem. Microbes utilizing surfactants as substrates for energy form the basis of the biodegradation of these compounds. The main organisms for surfactant biodegradation, both in sewage and natural waters, are bacteria. Several Pseudomonas and Bacillus spp. have shown efficient degradation of anionic surfactants namely: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate (SDBS). Also, several microbial consortia constituting Alcaligenes spp., Citrobacter spp., etc. have shown efficacy in the degradation of surfactants. The biodegradation efficiency studies of these microbes/microbial consortia would be of immense help in formulating better solutions for the bioremediation of surfactants and help to reduce their potential environmental hazards.  相似文献

Chitosan was used as a matrix to induce three-dimensional spheroids of HepG2 cells. Chitosan films were prepared and used for culturing Hep G2 cells. Attachment kinetics of the cells was studied on the chitosan films. The optimum seeding density of the Hep G2 cells, required for three-dimensional spheroid formation was determined and was found to be 5 × 104/ml. The growth kinetics of Hep G2 cells was studied using (3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay, and morphology of the cells was studied through optical photographs taken at various days of culture. The liver cell functions of the spheroids were determined by measuring albumin and urea secretions. The results obtained from these studies have shown that the culture of Hep G2 cells on chitosan matrix taking appropriate seeding density resulted in the formation of three-dimensional spheroids and exhibited higher amount of albumin and urea synthesis compared to monolayer culture. These miniature “liver tissue like” models can be used for in vitro tissue engineering applications like preliminary evaluation of the toxicity of drugs and chemicals.  相似文献

This paper models the proximate determinants of children born to over 13,000 Ethiopian women and of the women's stated preferences for additional births using the data from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2000. Empirical models for the number of children born to women were estimated using Poisson and ordinal regressions. The results show the importance of variables such as maternal education for smaller family size, and that variables reflecting desired family size are strong predictors of the numbers of children born to women. Secondly, binary logistic models for dichotomous variables for women not wanting more children and if getting pregnant would be a 'big problem' showed non-linear effects of the surviving and 'ideal' number of children. Moreover, the results indicated a desire on the part of women to limit family size, especially as the number of surviving children increased. Probit models were estimated to address potential endogeneity of certain variables. Overall, the results indicated that counselling couples about small family size and increasing the utilization of health care services can lower fertility in Ethiopia.  相似文献

Human C-reactive protein (CRP) protects mice from lethality after infection with virulent Streptococcus pneumoniae type 3. For CRP-mediated protection, the complement system is required; however, the role of complement activation by CRP in the protection is not defined. Based on the in vitro properties of CRP, it has been assumed that protection of mice begins with the binding of CRP to pneumococcal C-polysaccharide on S. pneumoniae and subsequent activation of the mouse complement system. In this study, we explored the mechanism of CRP-mediated protection by utilizing two CRP mutants, F66A and F66A/E81A. Both mutants, unlike wild-type CRP, do not bind live virulent S. pneumoniae. We found that passively administered mutant CRP protected mice from infection as effectively as the wild-type CRP did. Infected mice injected with wild-type CRP or with mutant CRP lived longer and had lower mortality than mice that did not receive CRP. Extended survival was caused by the persistence of reduced bacteremia in mice treated with any CRP. We conclude that the CRP-mediated decrease in bacteremia and the resulting protection of mice are independent of an interaction between CRP and the pathogen and therefore are independent of the ability of CRP to activate mouse complement. It has been shown previously that the Fcgamma receptors also do not contribute to such CRP-mediated protection. Combined data lead to the speculation that CRP acts on the effector cells of the immune system to enhance cell-mediated cytotoxicity and suggest investigation into the possibility of using CRP-loaded APC-based strategy to treat microbial infections.  相似文献
