Measurements of the gas vesicle space in steady-state light or phosphate-limited cultures of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae Ralfs, strain 7905 showed that gas vesicle content decreased as energy-limited growth rate increased hut was the same at several phosphate-limited growth rates. Upon a decrease in growth irradiance, gas vesicle content did increase in phosphate-limited cultures, hut the cultures remained nonbuoyant as long as P was limiting. Buoyant, energy-limited cultures lost their buoyancy in less than 2 h when exposed to higher irradiances. The primary mechanism for buoyancy loss was the accumulation of polysaccharide as ballast. Collapse of gas vesicles by turgor pressure played a minor role in the loss of buoyancy. When cultures were exposed to higher irradiances, cells continued to synthesize gas vesicles at the same rate as before the shift for at least 1 generation time. The amount of ballast required to make individual filaments in the population sink varied 4-fold. This variation appears to be due to differences in gas vesicle content among individual filaments. 相似文献

Legionnaires'' disease can result when droplets or aerosols containing legionella bacteria are inhaled and deposited in the lungs. A number of outbreaks have been associated with the use of a spa pool where aeration, a high water temperature, and a large and variable organic load make disinfectant levels difficult to maintain. Spa pool ownership is increasing, and the aim of this study, using two surrogate organisms (MS-2 coliphage and Pseudomonas aeruginosa [a natural contaminant]), was to assess the potential risk to domestic users when disinfection fails. A representative “entry level” domestic spa pool was installed in an outdoor courtyard. The manufacturer''s instructions for spa pool maintenance were not followed. A cyclone sampler was used to sample the aerosols released from the spa pool with and without activation of the air injection system. Samples were taken at increasing heights and distances from the pool. An aerodynamic particle sizer was used to measure the water droplet size distribution at each sample point. When the air injection system was inactivated, neither surrogate organism was recovered from the air. On activation of the air injection system, the mean mass of droplets within the respirable range (10 cm above the water line) was 36.8 μg cm−3. This corresponded to a mean air concentration of P. aeruginosa of 350 CFU m−3. From extrapolation from animal data, the estimated risk of infection from aerosols contaminated with similar concentrations of Legionella pneumophila was 0.76 (males) and 0.65 (females). At 1 m above and/or beyond the pool, the mean aerosol mass decreased to 0.04 μg cm−3 and corresponded to a 100-fold reduction in mean microbial air concentration. Eye movements of monkeys were measured during performance on a series of two-choice color and form discriminations which involved reversal and nonreversal shifts. Neither the amount of visual scanning nor the duration of individual fixations was related to the relevant dimension or to the type of shift. However, amount of scanning increased over the series of problems and was linearly related to the time to respond. The last fixation of a trial tended to be on the positive stimulus and a fixation near the end of a trial tended to be longer than one near the beginning.This research was supported by a research grant (GB-18953X) from the National Science Foundation to the first author. The effects of specific substitution on the 5-phenyl moiety and variations of the positional isomers of the 4-indolylamino substituent were explored. Functional brain signals are frequently decomposed into a relatively small set of large scale, distributed cortical networks that are associated with different cognitive functions. It is generally assumed that the connectivity of these networks is static in time and constant over the whole network, although there is increasing evidence that this view is too simplistic. This work proposes novel techniques to investigate the contribution of spontaneous BOLD events to the temporal dynamics of functional connectivity as assessed by ultra-high field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The results show that: 1) spontaneous events in recognised brain networks contribute significantly to network connectivity estimates; 2) these spontaneous events do not necessarily involve whole networks or nodes, but clusters of voxels which act in concert, forming transiently synchronising sub-networks and 3) a task can significantly alter the number of localised spontaneous events that are detected within a single network. These findings support the notion that spontaneous events are the main driver of the large scale networks that are commonly detected by seed-based correlation and ICA. Furthermore, we found that large scale networks are manifestations of smaller, transiently synchronising sub-networks acting dynamically in concert, corresponding to spontaneous events, and which do not necessarily involve all voxels within the network nodes oscillating in unison. 相似文献

Manganese oxyhydroxides have been found deposited on the surface of the lichen Catillaria chalybeia on an altered rhodochrosite. It is suggested that the Mn was mobilised from the ore surface via surface-weathering and redeposited in the thallus. The lichen Acarospora smaragdula also grew upon the ore but showed no sign of Mn deposition. Nine further lichens and two bryophytes were also found on the ore. 相似文献
