Individuals of many territorial species discriminate between familiar territorial neighbors and unfamiliar strangers based on individual differences in acoustic signals. Many anuran amphibians are territorial and use primarily acoustic communication during social interactions, but evidence for acoustically mediated individual discrimination is available only for one species. As a first step in research designed to investigate individual discrimination in a second species of territorial frog, we examined patterns of within-male and among-male variability in 198 advertisement calls of 20 male green frogs, Rana clamitans . The aim was to determine which acoustic properties could be used by males to recognize their territorial neighbors and to estimate limits of reliability afforded by these properties for identifying different neighbors. All of the call properties that we examined exhibited significant inter-individual variation. Discriminant function analyses assigned between 52% and 100% of calls to the correct individual, depending on sample size and the call properties included in the model. This suggests that there is sufficient among-male variability to statistically identify individuals by their advertisement calls. The call properties of fundamental frequency and dominant frequency contributed the most towards discrimination among individuals. Based on their natural history and behavior and the results reported here, we suggest that male green frogs likely discriminate between strangers and adjacently territorial neighbors based on individual variation in advertisement calls. 相似文献

A multimodal network (MMN) is a novel graph-theoretic formalism designed to capture the structure of biological networks and to represent relationships derived from multiple biological databases. MMNs generalize the standard notions of graphs and hypergraphs, which are the bases of current diagrammatic representations of biological phenomena and incorporate the concept of mode. Each vertex of an MMN is a biological entity, a biot, while each modal hyperedge is a typed relationship, where the type is given by the mode of the hyperedge. The current paper defines MMNs and concentrates on the structural aspects of MMNs. A companion paper develops MMNs as a representation of the semantics of biological networks and discusses applications of the MMNs in managing complex biological data. We argue that phenotypic plasticity should be broadly construed to encompass a diversity of phenomena spanning several hierarchical levels of organization. Despite seemingly disparate outcomes among different groups of organisms (e.g., the opening/closing of stomata in leaves, adjustments of allocation to growth/reproduction, or the production of different castes in social insects), there are underlying shared processes that initiate these responses. At the most fundamental level, all plastic responses originate at the level of individual cells, which receive and process signals from their environment. The broad variations in physiology, morphology, behavior, etc., that can be produced by a single genotype, can be accounted for by processes regulating gene expression in response to environmental variation. Although evolution of adaptive plasticity may not be possible for some types of environmental signals, in many cases selection has molded responses to environmental variation that generate precise and repeatable patterns of gene expression. We highlight the example of responses of plants to variation in light quality and quantity, mediated via the phytochrome genes. Responses to changes in light at particular stages of plants' life cycles (e.g., seed germination, competition, reproduction) are controlled by different members of this gene family. The mechanistic details of the cell and molecular biology of phytochrome gene action (e.g., their effects on expression of other genes) is outlined. Plasticity of cells and organisms to internal and external environmental signals is pervasive, and represents not just an outcome of evolutionary processes, but also a potentially important molder of them. Phenotypes originally initiated via a plastic response, can be fixed through genetic assimilation as alternate regulatory pathways are shut off. Evolution of mechanisms of plasticity and canalization can both reduce genetic variation, as well as shield it. When the organism encounters novel environmental conditions, this shielded variation may be expressed, revealing hidden reaction norms that represent the raw material for subsequent evolution. 相似文献

Melanosomes were isolated from the Harding-Passey melanoma with a density gradient technique. Using the Pomerantz radioassay for tyrosinase activity it was found that these isolated melanosomes could hydroxylate tyrosine in the presence of catalase sufficient to deny the enzyme any hydrogen peroxide. It was further found that the rate of hydroxylation was unaffected by the presence of exogenous hydrogen peroxide. Tyrosinase activity could be suppressed by preincubation in diethyldithiocarbamate followed by removal of this inhibitor before enzyme assay. Attempts to regain enzymatic activity, however, by addition of copper II ions were unsuccessful. No peroxidase activity could be detected on the isolated granules, and indeed evidence for a peroxidase inhibitor on the granules was found. It was also found that the peroxidase activity present in a 20% homogenate of mouse muscle did not demonstrate any tyrosinase activity with the Pomerantz assay even in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. It is concluded from these studies that there is tyrosinase on these melanosomes which is capable in vitro of hydroxylating tyrosine without any contribution from an active peroxidase. 相似文献

The central assumption of evolutionary theory is that natural selection drives the adaptation of populations to local environmental conditions, resulting in the evolution of adaptive phenotypes. The three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) displays remarkable phenotypic variation, offering an unusually tractable model for understanding the ecological mechanisms underpinning adaptive evolutionary change. Using populations on North Uist, Scotland we investigated the role of predation pressure and calcium limitation on the adaptive evolution of stickleback morphology and behavior. Dissolved calcium was a significant predictor of plate and spine morph, while predator abundance was not. Stickleback latency to emerge from a refuge varied with morph, with populations with highly reduced plates and spines and high predation risk less bold. Summary Freshwater rainbow trout,Salmo gairdneri, were injected with different doses of estradiol-17 in order to induce the synthesis of a protein, regarded as identical to vitellogenin. The plasma levels of free and protein-bound calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphate were studied in control and estradiol-17 treated fish, using an ultrafiltration method. Estradiol-17 caused a dose-dependent increase in plasma vitellogenin levels, which strongly correlated to protein-bound levels of calcium and magnesium in plasma. Calcium and magnesium were bound to vitellogenin in a ratio of 9:1, which was considerably higer than the protein-binding ratio of these ions in normal plasma (5.2:1). The dose-dependent increase in total plasma levels of calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphate during estradiol-17 treatment was solely due to an increase in the protein-bound fraction of these ions. It is concluded that the physiologically important plasma levels of free calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphate are effectively regulated at normal levels during vitellogenin synthesis. 相似文献
