Polyploidy has played a major role in the evolution of higher plants. Precise control of chromosome pairing is vital for conferring meiotic regularity, and hence reproductive stability in allopolyploids. In this review, we examine whether strong evidence has accumulated for the presence and activity of pairing control genes in different allopolyploid species that are entirely bivalent forming and that display a strict disomic inheritance. We show that very good evidence has been adduced in Triticum species, Avena sativa, Festuca arundinacea, Brassica napus, Gossypium hirsutum, and G. barbadense, and in amphidiploids related to the diploid species Lolium perenne, L. multiflorum, and L. rigidum. More circumstantial evidence has been obtained for polyploids in the genera Aegilops, Hordeum, Nicotiana, and Coffea, which have received far less attention than the other species. Although these pairing regulators seem to control different processes operating throughout the premeiotic interphase and the meiotic prophase, little is known about their precise mode of action. We present three hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the origin and evolution of pairing control genes; none of them has been supported by direct evidence, and the origin of most pairing suppressors is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between possible long-distance transport of birch pollen and
episodes of elevated concentration in Denmark. By analysis of a twenty-six year (1980–2006) time-series of bi-hourly birch
pollen counts from two sites (Copenhagen and Viborg) episodes of elevated counts (more than 100 grains) were identified in
fewer than 2% of cases. Trajectory analysis showed that such episodes are primarily associated with long-distance transport
from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia (43 and 33% of events, respectively); the lowest contribution originated from the British

Prenatal diagnosis: The authors present a personal case of triose-phosphate-isomerase deficiency. Clinically the deficiency associates a constitutional non spherocytic anemia, paroxystic and precocius, and neuromuscular symptoms (axial hypotonia and limb palsies). A diaphragmatic paralysis may complicate the syndrome. Infections are frequent. Survival rarely goes beyond 5 years of age. Biochemical exams show the ubiquity of the deficiency. Summary During germination of the spore of the sensitive fernOnoclea sensibilis L. the nucleus migrates from a central position to the proximal face and then to one end of the ellipsoidal spore. An asymmetric cell division follows giving rise to a small cell which differentiates immediately into a rhizoid, and a large cell which divides further to give rise to the prothallus. The proximal face of the spore coat is differentiated from the remainder of the spore by its ability to bind nickel ions under certain conditions and by its staining with a sulfide-silver procedure which localizes heavy metals. The inner portion of the exine at the proximal face is differentiated from the outer part by its ability to stain with sulfide-silver at specific periods during germination. The exine at the proximal face also contains pore-like structures 50 nm in diameter which extend from the inner layer of the exine to the outer surface. Sulfide-silver staining material appears to be extruded through the pores at specific periods during germination. The percentage of spores showing nickel-binding and sulfide-silver stainability increases sharply during the first two to four hours of imbibition, then decreases sharply during the following two hours.
