Abstract Over the last three decades, special-purpose "entomological" radars have contributed much to the development of our understanding of insect migration, especially of the nocturnal migrations at altitudes of up to ˜ 1 km that are regularly undertaken by many important pest species. One of the limitations of early radar studies, the difficulty of maintaining observations over long periods, has recently been overcome by the development of automated units that operate autonomously and transmit summaries of their observations to a base laboratory over the public telephone network. These relatively low-cost Insect Monitoring Radars (IMRs) employ a novel "ZLC" configuration that allows high quality data on the migrants' flight parameters and identity to be acquired. Two IMRs are currently operating in the semi-arid inland of eastern Australia, in a region where populations of migrant moths (Lepidoptera) and Australian plague locusts Chortoicetes terminifera (Orthoptera) commonly originate, and some examples of outputs from one of these units are presented. IMRs are able to provide the data needed to characterize a migration system, i.e. to estimate the probabilities of migration events occurring in particular directions at particular seasons and in response to particular environmental conditions and cues. They also appear capable of fulfilling a "sentinel" role for pest-management organisations, alerting forecasters to major migration events and thus to the likely new locations of potential target populations. Finally, they may be suitable for a more general ecological monitoring role, perhaps especially for quantifying year-to-year variations in biological productivity. 相似文献

A recent decline in spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe L. subsp. micranthos (Asteraceae), has been observed in parts of western Montana. The release of the biological control agent Cyphocleonus achates (Fahraeus) is thought to contribute to the decline, but persistent drought since at least 1999 may be an additional factor. We conducted outdoor plot experiments to test the relative impacts of C. achates weevils and summer drought relief on spotted knapweed survival and growth. Groups of spotted knapweed transplants were assigned to one of four weekly water addition treatments (no added water, and 0.25, 0.5 or full recovery of plant water deficit, where "deficit" refers to potential evapotranspiration minus rainfall) in May to August 2004 and June to August 2005 and to either exposure to or protection from C. achates. In June of each subsequent year (2005 and 2006), plants were harvested and growth attributes that reflect plant vigor were measured. Drought indices showed that throughout the time of the study until January 2006, western Montana was in drought alert or severe drought. Summer drought relief had no effect on aboveground biomass and plant height of knapweed plants in subsequent years, but feeding by C. achates larvae reduced these two measures of plant vigor. Knapweed plants resuming growth after the drought ended in spring 2006 were significantly larger than those resuming growth under drought conditions in spring 2005. Spring drought may reduce knapweed growth, but C. achates reduced knapweed growth regardless of drought conditions. 相似文献

Recent research in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia suggests that we can no longer assume a direct and exclusive link between anatomically modern humans and behavioral modernity (the 'human revolution'), and assume that the presence of either one implies the presence of the other: discussions of the emergence of cultural complexity have to proceed with greater scrutiny of the evidence on a site-by-site basis to establish secure associations between the archaeology present there and the hominins who created it. This paper presents one such case study: Niah Cave in Sarawak on the island of Borneo, famous for the discovery in 1958 in the West Mouth of the Great Cave of a modern human skull, the 'Deep Skull,' controversially associated with radiocarbon dates of ca. 40,000 years before the present. A new chronostratigraphy has been developed through a re-investigation of the lithostratigraphy left by the earlier excavations, AMS-dating using three different comparative pre-treatments including ABOX of charcoal, and U-series using the Diffusion-Absorption model applied to fragments of bones from the Deep Skull itself. Stratigraphic reasons for earlier uncertainties about the antiquity of the skull are examined, and it is shown not to be an 'intrusive' artifact. It was probably excavated from fluvial-pond-desiccation deposits that accumulated episodically in a shallow basin immediately behind the cave entrance lip, in a climate that ranged from times of comparative aridity with complete desiccation, to episodes of greater surface wetness, changes attributed to regional climatic fluctuations. Vegetation outside the cave varied significantly over time, including wet lowland forest, montane forest, savannah, and grassland. The new dates and the lithostratigraphy relate the Deep Skull to evidence of episodes of human activity that range in date from ca. 46,000 to ca. 34,000 years ago. Initial investigations of sediment scorching, pollen, palynomorphs, phytoliths, plant macrofossils, and starch grains recovered from existing exposures, and of vertebrates from the current and the earlier excavations, suggest that human foraging during these times was marked by habitat-tailored hunting technologies, the collection and processing of toxic plants for consumption, and, perhaps, the use of fire at some forest-edges. The Niah evidence demonstrates the sophisticated nature of the subsistence behavior developed by modern humans to exploit the tropical environments that they encountered in Southeast Asia, including rainforest. 相似文献

Fifteen novel C5 analogues of thiolactomycin (13 biphenyl analogues and two biphenyl mimics) have been synthesised and assessed for their in vitro mtFabH and whole cell Mycobacterium bovis BCG activity, respectively. Analysis of the 15 compounds revealed that six possessed enhanced in vitro activity in a direct mtFabH assay. Encouragingly analogues 11, 12 and 13 gave a significant enhancement in in vitro activity against mtFabH. Analogue 13 (5-(4-methoxycarbonyl-biphenyl-4-ylmethyl)-4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethyl-5H-thiophen-2-one) gave an IC(50) value of 3 microM compared to the parent drug thiolactomycin (75 microM) against mtFabH. The biological analysis of this library reaffirms the requirement for a linear pi-rich system containing hydrogen bond accepting substituents attached to the para-position of the C5 biphenyl analogue to generate compounds with enhanced activity. 相似文献

Background
The cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis contains a wide range of phosphatidyl inositol-based glycolipids that play critical structural roles and, in part, govern pathogen-host interactions. Ventricular chamber morphogenesis, first manifested by trabeculae formation, is crucial for cardiac function and embryonic viability and depends on cellular interactions between the endocardium and myocardium. We show that ventricular Notch1 activity is highest at presumptive trabecular endocardium. RBPJk and Notch1 mutants show impaired trabeculation and marker expression, attenuated EphrinB2, NRG1, and BMP10 expression and signaling, and decreased myocardial proliferation. Functional and molecular analyses show that Notch inhibition prevents EphrinB2 expression, and that EphrinB2 is a direct Notch target acting upstream of NRG1 in the ventricles. However, BMP10 levels are found to be independent of both EphrinB2 and NRG1 during trabeculation. Accordingly, exogenous BMP10 rescues the myocardial proliferative defect of in vitro-cultured RBPJk mutants, while exogenous NRG1 rescues differentiation in parallel. We suggest that during trabeculation Notch independently regulates cardiomyocyte proliferation and differentiation, two exquisitely balanced processes whose perturbation may result in congenital heart disease. 相似文献

The balance between carbon assimilation, storage and utilisation during photosynthesis is dependent on partitioning of photoassimilate between starch and sucrose, and varies in response to changes in the environment. However, the extent to which the capacity to modulate carbon partitioning rapidly through short‐term allosteric regulation may contribute to plant performance is unknown. Here we examine the physiological role of fructose 2,6‐bisphosphate (Fru‐2,6‐P2) during photosynthesis, growth and reproduction in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.). In leaves this signal metabolite contributes to coordination of carbon assimilation and partitioning during photosynthesis by allosterically modulating the activity of cytosolic fructose‐1,6‐bisphosphatase. Three independent T‐DNA insertional mutant lines deficient in 6‐phosphofructo‐2‐kinase/fructose‐2,6‐bisphosphatase (F2KP), the bifunctional enzyme responsible for both the synthesis and degradation of Fru‐2,6‐P2, lack Fru‐2,6‐P2. These plants have normal steady‐state rates of photosynthesis, but exhibit increased partitioning of photoassimilate into sucrose and have delayed photosynthetic induction kinetics. The F2KP‐deficient plants grow normally in constant environments, but show reduced growth and seed yields relative to wildtype plants in fluctuating light and/or temperature. We conclude that Fru‐2,6‐P2 is required for optimum regulation of photosynthetic carbon metabolism under variable growth conditions. These analyses suggest that the capacity of Fru‐2,6‐P2 to modulate partitioning of photoassimilate is an important determinant of growth and fitness in natural environments. 相似文献
