Oysters from 48 Gulf of Mexico sites were examined for presence and infection intensity of the endoparasite, Perkinsus (= Dermocystidium) marinus (Mackin, Owen and Collier, 1950) as part of NOAA's Status and Trends Mussel Watch Program. Prevalence exceeded 75% at 25 sites. Infection intensity did not vary with sex or reproductive stage. Latitude, total polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content and industrial and agricultural land use significantly affected the parasite's distribution. PAH and pesticide concentrations were latitudinally dependent, suggesting an impact of spawning frequency on uptake and depuration. P. marinus analysis complements the use of pollutant body burden for determining change in environmental quality because it responds differently than pollutant body burden to the biology and ecology of the oyster. 相似文献
Trait–environment correlations can arise from local adaptation and can identify genetically and environmentally appropriate seeds for restoration projects. However, anthropogenic changes can disrupt the relationships between traits and fitness. Finding the best seed sources for restoration may rely on describing plant traits adaptive in disturbed and invaded environments, recognizing that while traits may differ among species and functional groups, there may be similarities in the strategies that increase seedling establishment. Focusing on three grass genera, two shrub species, and two forb genera, we collected seeds of all taxa from 16 common sites in the sagebrush steppe of the western United States. We measured seed and seedling characteristics, including seed size, emergence timing, and root and shoot traits, and compiled a suite of environmental variables for each collection site. We described trait–environment associations and asked how traits or environment of origin were associated with seedling survival in invaded gardens. Sampling seven taxa from the same sites allowed us to ask how trait–environment–performance associations differ among taxa and whether natural selection favors similar traits across multiple taxa and functional groups. All taxa showed trait–environment associations consistent with local adaptation, and both environment of origin and phenotypes predicted survival in competitive restoration settings, with some commonalities among taxa. Notably, rapid emergence and larger seeds increased survival for multiple taxa. Environmental factors at collection sites, including lower slopes (especially for grasses), greater mean annual temperatures (especially for shrubs and forbs), and greater precipitation seasonality were frequently associated with increased survival. We noted one collection site with high seedling survival across all seven taxa, suggesting that conditions within some sites may result in selection for traits that increase establishment for multiple species. Thus, choosing native plant sources with the most adaptive traits, along with matching climates, will likely improve the restoration of invaded communities. 相似文献
The genus Phyllachora contains numerous obligate fungal parasites that produce raised, melanized structures called stromata on their plant hosts referred to as tar spot. Members of this genus are known to infect many grass species but generally do not cause significant damage or defoliation, with the exception of P. maydis which has emerged as an important pathogen of maize throughout the Americas, but the origin of this pathogen remains unknown. To date, species designations for Phyllachora have been based on host associations and morphology, and most species are assumed to be host specific. We assessed the sequence diversity of 186 single stroma isolates collected from 16 hosts representing 15 countries. Samples included both herbarium and contemporary strains that covered a temporal range from 1905 to 2019. These 186 isolates were grouped into five distinct species with strong bootstrap support. We found three closely related, but genetically distinct groups of Phyllachora are capable of infecting maize in the United States, we refer to these as the P. maydis species complex. Based on herbarium specimens, we hypothesize that these three groups in the P. maydis species complex originated from Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Although two of these groups were only found on maize, the third and largest group contained contemporary strains found on maize and other grass hosts, as well as herbarium specimens from maize and other grasses that include 10 species of Phyllachora. The herbarium specimens were previously identified based on morphology and host association. This work represents the first attempt at molecular characterization of Phyllachora species infecting grass hosts and indicates some Phyllachora species can infect a broad range of host species and there may be significant synonymy in the Phyllachora genus. 相似文献
The controversy of the Classic versus the Exchange theories for the origin of simple chromatid breaks is outlined.
Using BrdU harlequin sister-chromatid differentiation four Revell ratios can be defined and these have been obtained and tested as a block in V79 hamster cells. The values are quite different from the simple predictions. However, values similar to those observed (taken as a block) can be readily simulated from Revell theory by making the assumption that intra-chromatid events are dominant (0.7:0.3). They can also be obtained from contingency modelling of Classic theory using the same assumption plus the additional constraint that there is no contribution from isolated single lesions (Poisson class 1).
If this latter assumption is correct, then the frequency of breaks involving a colour-jump (ratio III) should not decline to zero as the dose falls. A dose-response experiment shows that it does not, but remains approximately constant at about 12%, even in the unirradiated control.
An added complication arises when we discover for the TB/BB situation, that whilst neither breaks nor gaps show any excess BB involvement (sensitisation), lesions involved in interchanges show at least a 2-fold BB excess.
Clearly, the chromatid discontinuities we are scoring are not behaving as would be expected of a residue of unrejoined primary breaks (Classic theory) and we infer also that they are not ‘simple’. 相似文献
Glucagon-like-peptide 1 (GLP-1) released from the intestine is considered to be an important incretin. We have recently demonstrated that glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) stimulated GLP-1 secretion from canine ileal L cells in culture. To investigate further the interplay between GLP-1- and GIP-secreting cells, we set out to determine the exact location and abundance of both cell types throughout the canine intestine. Canine small intestine was subdivided into 15-20 segments and investigated by immunocytochemistry with computer-assisted imaging. The abundance of GIP-, GLP-1- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells was determined. GIP-secreting K cells were equally distributed in duodenum and jejunum, with the GLP-1-secreting L cells concentrated in the jejunum (5% duodenum, 73% jejunum and 22% ileum). These results indicated that the middle section of the small intestine containing 69% of the K cells also contained 51% of the L cells. Double immunostaining confirmed this overlap and furthermore over 30% of the L cells in this region were found adjacent to K cells. These results suggest the existence of a paracrine interaction between the K and L cells and indicate the importance of the jejunum in the regulation of insulin release by enteric-derived incretins. 相似文献
Knowledge of the biology of native fishes of the Murray-Darling Basin is based largely on studies conducted under hatchery conditions and on a limited number of recreationally important species. From observations that increases in water level in aquaculture ponds initiate spawning in some species, and from limited studies of wild fishes and studies in overseas floodplain river systems, a perception has emerged of the importance of flooding and the flood plain in the life cycles of Murray-Darling fishes in general. However, there is little confirmatory evidence of the use of temporary floodplain habitats by larvae, juveniles or adults. The significance of in-channel habitats, especially for rearing, has received little attention. Murray-Darling fish species can be placed into three life history modes, based mainly on spawning style and time and developmental intervals of larvae at first feeding. Fish in each group may be able to take advantage of floods if the timing is right and prey are plentiful, however, the larvae of some species are able to recruit under non-flood conditions within the main river channel. This forms the basis of the low flow recruitment hypothesis, which attempts to explain why some species spawn during the warmest months and lowest flows and how they are able to recruit under these conditions. This hypothesis is then placed in the context of the current state of knowledge of the relationships between flow and the biology of Murray-Darling fishes, specifically cues for spawning, movement and recruitment. The lack of widespread evidence for floodplain use by any life history interval of fish may be due to a paucity of study, however, there are some fundamental factors, such as the predictability of timing and duration of high flow events as well as the lack of coincidence of high flows and high temperatures in some regions of the Basin, which may be important in determining the use of floodplain habitats by fish. 相似文献
Mountain gorillas, the largest extant primates, subsist almost entirely on plant matter. Moreover, their diet includes a substantial amount of structural material, such as bark and stems, which other primates tend to avoid. Accordingly, the robust masticatory apparatus of gorillas may be adaptive to this presumably tough diet; however, quantitative information on this subject is lacking. In this study the fracture toughness of mountain gorilla foods was examined for the first time. Samples of 44 food plants from Bwindi-Impenetrable National Park (BINP) and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (MGNP) were tested. These parks are inhabited by two gorilla populations that regarded by some as being distinct at the subspecific taxonomic level. Although food toughness did not differ between the two populations, both diets contained tough items. Tree barks were the toughest food items (varying from 0.23 to 8.2 kJ/m2), followed by shrub barks, pith, and stems. The toughness of leaves and fruit was negligible compared to that of bark. The toughness of bamboo was low in comparison to the toughest food items. Accordingly, the prominent toughness of bark, pith, and stems may be key factors in the evolution of orofacial robusticity in mountain gorillas. 相似文献
