Pulmonary tuberous sclerosis produced interstitial disease in a woman with normal-sized lungs; numerous hemosiderin-laden macrophages were found in the fluid obtained through bronchoalveolar lavage. The pathological changes seen in the lungs were identical to those of pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis, in which the constellation of clinical signs usually found in tuberous sclerosis is absent. The two conditions are sufficiently similar in clinical presentation, pathological changes and prognosis to be considered variants of the same disease. The recent findings of progestin receptors in lung tissue from patients with pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis will likely direct future management towards hormonal manipulation. 相似文献

The coral Astrangia danae Milne Edwards & Haime 1849 occurs naturally with and without symbiotic algae and thus may have two sources of nourishment: (1) particles captured by the coral polyps, and (2) photosynthetic products translocated from their zooxanthellae. Symbiotic colonies may have both sources, and nonsymbiotic ones certainly have only the former. The relative importance of these two food sources was studied in the laboratory by examining the tissues of corals fed with frozen brine shrimp. Stock corals were fed once per week. Two to three weeks prior to each experiment, selected corals were placed on one of three feeding schedules: starved (S), fed once per week (1/wk), and fed three times per week (3/wk). The coral tissues were analyzed for protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and zooxanthellae content. Increased feeding frequency (1/wk → 3/wk) resulted in an increased tissue biomass and lipid to protein (L/P) ratio; starvation (1/wk → S) caused a decrease in these parameters. Symbiosis with zooxanthellae had an effect similar to increased feeding frequency in that the S and 1/wk symbiotic corals had a higher L/P ratio than comparable nonsymbiotic ones. There were no significant differences in L/P ratios between the 3/wk symbiotic and nonsymbiotic corals. Freshly collected colonies had a tissue composition most similar to the laboratory animals fed 3/wk. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that ingestion of solid food is the major nutritional source for A. danae in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, but our experiments suggest that the algae can have an important effect on tissue L/P ratios during times of food scarcity. 相似文献

Administration of three successive doses of triiodothyronine (T3) (50 micrograms/100 g body wt), given on alternate days to thyroidectomized and euthyroid rats, stimulated oxygen consumption (QO2) and Na+ transport-dependent respiration (QO2 [5]) in the stripped jejunal mucosa, a preparation that consisted mostly of epithelial cells. The increase in QO2(t) accounted for 57% of the increment in QO2 in the transition from the hypothyroid to the euthyroid state and for 29% of the increment in the transition from the euthyroid to the hyperthyroid state. Administration of T3 to hypothyroid rats also increased the yield of epithelial cells. Injection of T3 into thyroidectomized and euthyroid rats increased the specific activity (at Vmax) of the (Na+ + K+)-dependent adenosine triphosphatase (NaK-ATPase) in jejunal crude membrane preparations. No significant change was recorded in the activity of Mg-ATPase in the same preparation. The ratio of QO2/NaK-ATPase and QO2(t)/NaK-ATPase in the various thyroid states remained constant, indicating proportionate increased in the respiratory and enzymatic indices. The effect of administration of T3 to thyroidectomized rats on the number of NaK-ATPase units (recovered in the crude membrane preparation) was estimated by: (a) Na+ + Mg++ + ATP-dependent binding of [3H]-ouabain to crude membrane fractions, and (b) the amount of the phosphorylated intermediate formed in the NaK-ATPase reaction from AT32P(gamma). Estimates were obtained of the maximal number of [3H]ouabain binding sites (Nm) and dissociation constants (Kd). Nm for [3H]ouabain and Nak-ATPase specific activity increased to about the same extent after T3 administration to thyroidectomized rats, with no change in the apparent Kd values. The amount of phosphorylated intermediate formed in jejunal crude membrane preparations also increased significantly. Thus, thyroid hormone administration may increase the number of active Na+pump sites in the plasma membrane. Ongoing oscillations and evoked responses are two main types of neuronal activity obtained with diverse electrophysiological recordings (EEG/MEG/iEEG/LFP). Although typically studied separately, they might in fact be closely related. One possibility to unite them is to demonstrate that neuronal oscillations have non-zero mean which predicts that stimulus- or task-triggered amplitude modulation of oscillations can contribute to the generation of evoked responses. We validated this mechanism using computational modelling and analysis of a large EEG data set. With a biophysical model, we indeed demonstrated that intracellular currents in the neuron are asymmetric and, consequently, the mean of alpha oscillations is non-zero. To understand the effect that neuronal currents exert on oscillatory mean, we varied several biophysical and morphological properties of neurons in the network, such as voltage-gated channel densities, length of dendrites, and intensity of incoming stimuli. For a very large range of model parameters, we observed evidence for non-zero mean of oscillations. Complimentary, we analysed empirical rest EEG recordings of 90 participants (50 young, 40 elderly) and, with spatio-spectral decomposition, detected at least one spatially-filtred oscillatory component of non-zero mean alpha oscillations in 93% of participants. In order to explain a complex relationship between the dynamics of amplitude-envelope and corresponding baseline shifts, we performed additional simulations with simple oscillators coupled with different time delays. We demonstrated that the extent of spatial synchronisation may obscure macroscopic estimation of alpha rhythm modulation while leaving baseline shifts unchanged. Overall, our results predict that amplitude modulation of neural oscillations should at least partially explain the generation of evoked responses. Therefore, inference about changes in evoked responses with respect to cognitive conditions, age or neuropathologies should be constructed while taking into account oscillatory neuronal dynamics. 相似文献

Samples of dried foods, feeds, and drugs were examined for Enterobacteriaceae by using buffered glucose-Brilliant Green-bile broth as the final enrichment medium and deep tubes of violet-red-bile-glucose-agar for confirmation. The pre-enrichment treatments used for the resuscitation of sublethally impaired cells were overnight incubation in lactose broth versus incubation for 1 to 6 hr at room temperature in shallow layers of tryptone soya peptone broth. Multidrug resistance (MDR) of tumour cells is related to the overexpression of ATP-dependent pumps responsible for the active efflux of antitumour agents out of resistant cells. Benzoperimidine and anthrapyridone compounds exhibit comparable cytotoxic activity against sensitive and MDR tumour cells. They diffuse extremely rapidly across the plasma membrane and render the ATP-dependent efflux inefficient. Such uptake could disturb an energy metabolism of normal cells possessing an elevated level of ATP-dependent proteins, especially erythrocytes having a high level of the MRP1, MRP4 and MRP5 proteins. In this study the effect of five antitumour agents: benzoperimidine (BP1), anthrapyridones (CO1, CO7) and reference drugs used in the clinic: doxorubicin (DOX) and pirarubicin (PIRA), on the energetic state in human erythrocytes has been examined. These compounds have various types of structure and kinetics of cellular uptake (slow--DOX, CO7, moderate--PIRA, fast--BP1, CO1) resulting in their different ability to saturate ATP-dependent transporters. The energetic state of erythrocytes was examined by determination of purine nucleotide contents (ATP, ADP, AMP), NAD(+) and values of adenylate energy charge (AEC) using an HPLC method. It was found that the level of nucleotides as well as the AEC value of erythrocytes were not changed during 24 h of incubation with these agents independently of their structure and ability to saturate ATP-dependent pumps. This is a very promising result in view of their potential use in the clinic as antitumour drugs against multidrug resistant cancers. 相似文献

Epicardial fat is a relatively neglected component of the heart and could be an important risk factor of cardiac disease. The objective of our study was to assess the relationship between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) extent, fat distribution, and coronaropathy in a group of adult victims of accidental or suspicious sudden death. In 56 cadavers, we performed 34 measurements of EAT from five computerized photographs of the heart (anterior and posterior faces, and three ventricle transversal slices) and analyzed their relationship with anthropometric markers of adiposity (BMI, waist and leg circumference, thickness of abdominal and thigh subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)), with the presence and staging of coronary artery disease (CAD), and with markers of myocardial hypertrophy. Simple linear regressions showed that EAT measurements are highly intercorrelated (r from 0.4 to 0.6, P < 0.001), and correlate with age, waist circumference, and heart weight, and to a lesser extent, with BMI, abdominal SAT thickness, and leg SAT thickness. Multiple regression showed that age, waist circumference, and heart weight significantly and independently correlate with EAT (P < 0.0001). No other anthropometric measurement was found independently correlated with EAT. The EAT/myocardium ratios correlated positively with age and waist circumference. Anterior and posterior areas of EAT were found significantly increased in patients with CAD and correlated positively with CAD staging (P = 0.0034, r = 0.38). Anterior EAT surface was found positively associated with CAD (P = 0.01), independently of age and other adiposity measurements. Prospective studies are needed to assess the risk of occurrence/progression of CAD that relate to EAT excess. 相似文献
