Background
Postnatal growth in mouse is rapid, with total skeletal muscle mass increasing several-fold in the first few weeks. Muscle growth can be achieved by either an increase in muscle fibre number or an increase in the size of individual myofibres, or a combination of both. The cellular organisation of theArabidopsis thaliana root is remarkably regular. A fate map of the primary root and root meristem that predicts the developmental destinies of cells within the embryonic root primordium has been constructed. Nevertheless, laser ablation experiments demonstrate that root meristem cells develop according to position and not according to lineage. Mutational analysis has identified genes required for cell specification in the radial as well as in the apical-basal dimension. With a series of mathematical models, we explore impacts of predation on a prey population structured into two age classes, juveniles and adults, assuming generalist, age-specific predators. Predation on any age class is either absent, or represented by types II or III functional responses, in various combinations. We look for Allee effects or more generally for multiple stable steady states in the prey population. One of our key findings is the occurrence of a predator pit (low-density ??refuge?? state of prey induced by predation; the chance of escaping predation thus increases both below and above an intermediate prey density) when only one age class is consumed and predators use a type II functional response ??this scenario is known to occur for an unstructured prey consumed via a type III functional response and can never occur for an unstructured prey consumed via a type II one. In the case where both age classes are consumed by type II generalist predators, an Allee effect occurs frequently, but some parameters give also rise to a predator pit and even three stable equilibria (one extinction equilibrium and two positive ones??Allee effect and predator pit combined). Multiple positive stable equilibria are common if one age class is consumed via a type II functional response and the other via a type III functional response??here, in addition to the behaviours mentioned above one may even observe three stable positive equilibria????double?? predator pit. The synergy site on fibronectin's FN-III(9) module, located approximately 32 A away from the RGD-loop on FN-III(10), greatly enhances integrin alpha(5)beta(1) mediated cell binding. Since fibronectin is exposed to mechanical forces acting on the extracellular matrix in vivo, we used steered molecular dynamics to study how mechanical stretching of FN-III(9-10) affects the relative distance between these two synergistic sites. Our simulations predict the existence of an intermediate state prior to unfolding. In this state, the synergy-RGD distance is increased from 32 A to approximately 55 A, while the conformations of both sites remain unperturbed. This distance is too large for both sites to co-bind the same receptor, as indicated by experiments that confirm that increasing the length of the linker chain between FN-III(9) and FN-III(10) reduces alpha(5)beta(1) binding. Our simulations thus suggest that increased alpha(5)beta(1)-binding attributed to the synergy site, along with the associated downstream cell-signaling events, can be turned off mechanically by stretching FN-III(9-10) into this intermediate state. There is a current trend to support pet health through the addition of natural supplements to their diet, taking into account
the high incidence of medical conditions related to their immune system and gastrointestinal tract. This study investigates
effects of the plant Eleutherococcus senticosus as a dietary additive on faecal microbiota, faecal characteristics, blood serum biochemistry and selected parameters of cellular
immunity in healthy dogs. A combination of the plant with the canine-derived probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum CCM 7421 was also evaluated. Thirty-two dogs were devided into 4 treatment groups; receiving no additive (control), dry root
extract of E. senticosus (8 mg/kg of body weight), probiotic strain (108 CFU/mL, 0.1 mL/kg bw) and the combination of both additives. The trial lasted 49 days with 14 days supplementation period.
Results confirm no antimicrobial effect of the plant on the probiotic abundance either in vitro (cultivation test) or in vivo. The numbers of clostridia, lactic acid bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria as well as the concentration of serum total protein,
triglyceride, glucose and aspartate aminotransferase were significantly altered according to the treatment group. Leukocyte
phagocytosis was significantly stimulated by the addition of probiotic while application of plant alone led to a significant
