Objectives

We studied the incidence and prevalence of, and co-factors for depression in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

Methods

Depression-specific items were introduced in 2010 and prospectively collected at semiannual cohort visits. Clinical, laboratory and behavioral co-factors of incident depression among participants free of depression at the first two visits in 2010 or thereafter were analyzed with Poisson regression. Cumulative prevalence of depression at the last visit was analyzed with logistic regression.

Results

Among 4,422 participants without a history of psychiatric disorders or depression at baseline, 360 developed depression during 9,348 person-years (PY) of follow-up, resulting in an incidence rate of 3.9 per 100 PY (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.5–4.3). Cumulative prevalence of depression during follow-up was recorded for 1,937/6,756 (28.7%) participants. Incidence and cumulative prevalence were higher in injection drug users (IDU) and women. Older age, preserved work ability and higher physical activity were associated with less depression episodes. Mortality (0.96 per 100 PY, 95% CI 0.83–1.11) based upon 193 deaths over 20,102 PY was higher among male IDU (2.34, 1.78–3.09), female IDU (2.33, 1.59–3.39) and white heterosexual men (1.32, 0.94–1.84) compared to white heterosexual women and homosexual men (0.53, 0.29–0.95; and 0.71, 0.55–0.92). Compared to participants free of depression, mortality was slightly elevated among participants with a history of depression (1.17, 0.94–1.45 vs. 0.86, 0.71–1.03, P = 0.033). Suicides (n = 18) did not differ between HIV transmission groups (P = 0.50), but were more frequent among participants with a prior diagnosis of depression (0.18 per 100 PY, 95%CI 0.10–0.31; vs. 0.04, 0.02–0.10; P = 0.003).

Conclusions

Depression is a frequent co-morbidity among HIV-infected persons, and thus an important focus of care.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyse the frequency of disomy for chromosomes 1, 13, 14, 18, 21, 22, X and Y in sperm nuclei of 50 infertile men and 10 healthy probands of proven fertility. Semen parameters (sperm count, global motility and morphology), urological clinical examination, genital ultrasound and lymphocyte karyotyping were performed for each patient. Disomy frequency was established by fluorescence in situ hybridization by using whole chromosome paint probes. The mean rate of disomy for the various autosomes studied was higher in infertile males than in subjects of proven fertility. Interchromosomal and interindividual differences in the disomy frequency were observed between the 50 patients. The mean frequency of homodisomy YY and heterodisomy XY was increased in spermatozoa of patients with low semen quality parameters (0.24% and 0.54%, respectively). The disomy frequency in infertile males was directly correlated with the severity of oligospermia. However, no relationship was established between aneuploidy rate, sperm motility, morphology or clinical phenotype. These results support the hypothesis that, during spermatogenesis of males with sperm parameter alterations, a decreased frequency of meiotic chromosome pairing and crossing over may lead to spermatogenesis arrest at the meiosis stage and/or to an increase of meiotic nondisjunctions. Meiotic arrest in some germ cells may be responsible for oligospermia and nondisjunctions in other cells for aneuploidy in mature male gametes.  相似文献

The structure of gastropod communities was examined from January to June 1999 in four sites of the streams of Mont Saint-Michel Bay along a gradient of salinity, and the occurrence of larval trematodes infecting snails was studied. Abundance and species richness of gastropods increased from polyhaline (95 snails, 1 species) to oligohaline waters (6672 snails, 6 species). Whatever the salinity, the most abundant species was Potamopyrgus antipodarum, an invasive non-indigenous species that represented 80% of the gastropods. Only one male was found in P. antipodarum populations suggesting a predominantly parthenogenetic mode of reproduction. Among 7218 gastropods collected, 1.2% were infected by larval trematodes: 5 species in Lymnaea peregra (4.4%), 4 species in Planorbis planorbis (12.0%), one echinostome in Physa acuta (0.2%), and a new species of Sanguinicola in P. antipodarum (0.5%). This is the first record of infected P. antipodarum in Europe. No parasites were found in polyhaline waters. The prevalence per host population varied from 0 to 100% depending on time of collection, salinity and host species. In the lowest-salinity site, abundance of gastropods and prevalence of trematodes were negatively correlated. The dominance of P. antipodarum in the gastropod communities is discussed in relation with euryhalinity, parthenogenesis and weak rate of parasitism.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Finite Element Method (FEM) has been used in recent years to simulate overturning processes in trees. This study aimed at using FEM to determine the role of individual roots in tree anchorage with regard to different rooting patterns, and to estimate stress distribution in the soil and roots during overturning. METHODS: The FEM was used to carry out 2-D simulations of tree uprooting in saturated soft clay and loamy sand-like soil. The anchorage model consisted of a root system embedded in a soil block. Two root patterns were used and individual roots removed to determine their contribution to anchorage. KEY RESULTS: In clay-like soil the size of the root-soil plate formed during overturning was defined by the longest roots. Consequently, all other roots localized within this plate had no influence on anchorage strength. In sand-like soil, removing individual root elements altered anchorage resistance. This result was due to a modification of the shape and size of the root-soil plate, as well as the location of the rotation axis. The tap root and deeper roots had more influence on overturning resistance in sand-like soil compared with clay-like soil. Mechanical stresses were higher in the most superficial roots and also in leeward roots in sand-like soil. The relative difference in stresses between the upper and lower sides of lateral roots was sensitive to root insertion angle. Assuming that root eccentricity is a response to mechanical stresses, these results explain why eccentricity differs depending on root architecture. CONCLUSIONS: A simple 2-D Finite Element model was developed to better understand the mechanisms involved during tree overturning. It has been shown how root system morphology and soil mechanical properties can modify the shape of the root plate slip surface as well as the position of the rotation axis, which are major components of tree anchorage.  相似文献

Despite the common assumption that most Haplosclerida are viviparous sponges, this study of the reproductive cycle of Haliclona fulva demonstrates that this species is actually oviparous and gonochoric. Intriguingly, not a single male was recorded in 15 months of sampling. Oogenesis is synchronous, starting in late April and terminating in September. Asexual reproduction is represented by cyclic budding, which occurs from late November to early March. During the season of asexual reproduction, the reproductive effort represents from 0.21% to 1.49% of the parental tissue, with the highest values being recorded in winter. During the season of sexual reproduction, the female reproductive effort ranges 0.05–1.15%, with the highest effort appearing in early summer. However, no significant correlation between reproductive efforts and seawater temperature fluctuations could be detected. We describe the ultrastructural morphogenesis of the buds for the first time in this species. This process is asynchronous, with buds of variable size being attached to the maternal apical surface via a short stalk. Young buds lack any particular anatomical organization, whereas bud maturity is characterized by the development of mesohyl and by the appearance of an increasing number and volume of lacunae in the central part of each bud. At this stage, buds harbor numerous small choanocyte chambers scattered throughout the inner region, and all cell types known from the mesohyl of parental sponges: microgranular cells, granular cells, archaeocytes, endopinacocytes and exopinacocytes, central cells, and sclerocytes.  相似文献

MeCP2 binds to methylated DNA in a chromatin context and has an important role in cancer and brain development and function. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors are currently being used to palliate many cancer and neurological disorders. Yet, the molecular mechanisms involved are not well known for the most part and, in particular, the relationship between histone acetylation and MeCP2 is not well understood. In this paper, we study the effect of the HDAC inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) on MeCP2, a protein whose dysregulation plays an important role in these diseases. We find that treatment of cells with TSA decreases the phosphorylation state of this protein and appears to result in a higher MeCP2 chromatin binding affinity. Yet, the binding dynamics with which the protein binds to DNA appear not to be significantly affected despite the chromatin reorganization resulting from the high levels of acetylation. HDAC inhibition also results in an overall decrease in MeCP2 levels of different cell lines. Moreover, we show that miR132 increases upon TSA treatment, and is one of the players involved in the observed downregulation of MeCP2.  相似文献

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a multidrug transporter responsible for resistance to anticancer chemotherapy and physiologically involved in absorption, distribution, and excretion of a large number of hydrophobic xenobiotics. P-gp exhibits both an ATPase activity correlated with its drug transport function and a basal ATPase activity in the absence of any drug. We have developed a high-throughput screening test to detect specific interactions between drugs and P-gp. We took into account the existence of multiple binding sites on P-gp to propose and validate an optimized strategy, based on the modulation of the basal ATPase activity of P-gp and of the ATPase activity stimulated by three reference substrates (verapamil, vinblastine, and progesterone). The ATPase activity measurements were performed on P-gp-containing membrane vesicles from actinomycin-D-selected hamster DC-3F lung fibroblasts by a spectrophotometric method based on continuous monitoring of ADP formation, regenerated in ATP by a coupled enzyme system. This assay may be performed on 96- or 384-well microtiter plates. When applying this ATPase assay to 41 compounds known from the literature for their interaction with P-gp, 95% of them were found to be positive, whereas only 78% were positive when considering solely the modulation of the basal activity.  相似文献
