Volume comparisons in the cerebellar complex of primates. II. Cerebellar nuclei

Volumes of medial, interposed, and lateral cerebellar nuclei (MCN, ICN, and LCN) were measured in Insectivora, Scandentia, and Primates, including man. The relative size of the nuclei was expressed in size indices. Insectivora had by far the smallest cerebellar nuclei. The simians, in general, had larger cerebellar nuclei than the prosimians, but there was considerable overlap. From Insectivora to man, the MCN was the least progressive and the LCN the most progressive. The indices are expected to reflect the relative size of the three longitudinal zones of the cerebellum (vermis/MCN, pars intermedius/ICN, hemisphere/LCN). They, together with those of the ventral pons and cerebellum (part I), are discussed in relation to the predominant locomotor pattern of a species, and with reference to evolutionary trends in primate phylogeny.     

Permanent preservation of whole alizarin red S skeletons by clearing and embedding in polyester resins

A one-step clearing and embedding procedure for alizarin red S stained skeletons is described. Embryos are fixed in formalin, skinned and eviscerated. After staining in a 10 mg/liter solution of alizarin red S in 5% aqueous KOH, specimens are dehydrated in a graded series of acetone-polyester monomer solutions. Finally, the specimens are embedded at room temperature in the polyester resin. A special reusable metallic mold is described for embedment of large fetuses. Specimens previously cleared in glycerol can be processed with this method.     

Mengovirus-Induced Cytopathic Effect in L-Cells: Protective Effect of Interferon

The effect of interferon on mengovirus-induced cytopathic effect (CPE) in L cells, the cut-off of host-cell protein synthesis, and production of mature virus were found to be dependent on the concentration of interferon. CPE and inhibition of host protein synthesis were not affected until the concentration of interferon was increased 100-fold over that required to reduce viral yields by 90%.     

Genetic Transfer of the Vi Antigen from Salmonella typhosa to Escherichia coli

The Vi antigen was expressed in a strain of Escherichia coli after transfer of the viaB locus from a Salmonella typhosa Hfr donor.     

Synthesis of 10,11-dihydrofarnesyl pyrophosphate from 6,7-dihydrogeranyl pyrophosphate by prenyltransferase

The syntheses of 6,7-dihydrogeraniol and of its pyrophosphate are described. It is shown that this analogue of geranyl pyrophosphate is a substrate for liver prenyltransferase and that the product synthesized by this enzyme from it and isopentenyl pyrophosphate is 10,11-dihydrofarnesyl pyrophosphate. The K(m) value for 6,7-dihydrogeranyl pyrophosphate was determined to be 1.11+/-0.19mum as compared with 4.34+/-1.71mum for geranyl pyrophosphate. The maximum reaction velocity with the artifical substrate was, however, only about one-fourth of that observed with geranyl pyrophosphate. The binding of isopentenyl pyrophosphate to the enzyme was not affected by the artificial substrate.
