The existence of chaotic attractors for discrete time series, derived from the occurrences of spikes during electrophysiological recordings, was investigated. The time series included between 800 and 5200 points per analyzed record. The spike trains were recorded in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (n=13) and in the auditory thalamus (n=14). The experiments were performed on anesthetized rats during spontaneous activity and during auditory stimulation. According to standard methods of dynamical systems theory, an embedding space was constructed using delay coordinates. The embedding and correlation dimensions were computed by means of the correlation integrals. For 7 of 27 samples, a deterministic structure with a low embedding dimension (ranging between 2 and 6) and a correlation dimension between 0.14 and 3.3 could be determined. Evidence was found that the sensory stimulation may affect the chaotic behavior. Single units recorded simultaneously from the same electrode tip may display different chaotic dynamics, even with a similar time-locked response to the stimulus onset.  相似文献

The purpose of our study was to investigate the relationship between plasma and hair levels of Se, Zn, and Cu, and cancer. We selected a total of 66 patients affected by either breast (38) or lung (28) cancer. They entered into the study at the onset of disease, and before any chemical or radiotherapy. Controls were randomly selected among healthy people and were matched for sex, age, smoking habits, and residence. In the group of breast cancer, a significant decrease in hair Se was found compared to controls (p<0.01), whereas plasma Se was only slightly decreased. No difference between cases and controls was detected in both hair and plasma levels of Zn and Cu. Subjects who developed lung cancer were significantly lower in hair Zn (p<0.05) and Cu (p<0.01) than controls, whereas there was no difference with regard to Se. In addition, plasma Cu of these patients was increased as compared to controls.  相似文献

Minirhizotron observations of roots of leeks and Brussels sprouts grown in the Wageningen Rhizolab were used to study the dynamics of root length. Day of appearance and the time of decay were assessed for individual root segments visible on the minirhizotron surface.A Brussels sprouts crop produced much more root length than leeks, but the average longevity of these roots was about half that of leek roots.To investigate whether root colour or UV fluorescence could be used as a quantitative index of root functionality or root age, changes in root colour (on a scale of greys) over time were measured with interactive image analysis. In both crops a gradual change towards black was found with ageing. Measurements of the intensity of the UV fluorescence showed that leek roots fluoresced more than Brussels sprouts roots. Over time, UV fluorescence decreased in Brussels sprouts roots but increased in leek roots. It is concluded that UV fluorescence cannot be used as a universal indicator of root age or root functionality, but in some plant species it may be used to separate (transparent) roots from the background with image analysis techniques.  相似文献

Little attention has been devoted to assessing the reproducibility of (paleo)pathological observations. Harris lines (HL) are among the markers most used to determine chronology of stresses suffered during growth. Nevertheless, their scoring entails remarkable methodological difficulty. Bone sections (S) and radiographs (R) of 29 adult tibiae of archeological provenance (medieval) were scored for HL by five observers. At regular intervals of time, each observer gave two independent counts on both series. Results show a) a substantial interobserver disagreement of HL estimates for both sectional and radiographic records, and b) a high level of intraobserver error. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Cell suspension cultures of Beta vulgaris L., treated with calciumchelators or untreated, were used to characterize pyndine nucleotide-dependentdiaphorases of microsomes. The microsomal activity of NADH-dependentduroquinone reductase from cultures treated with 10 mM Na2EGTAfor 24 h increased by a factor of 1.8 with respect to controlmicrosomes, and was mainly associated with particles of d=1.17gml–1. NADPH-duroquinone reductase and NADH-ferricyanidereductase activities showed smaller increases. Bacterial protein-lipopolysaccharidecomplexes (prLPS) also promoted the increase of microsomal diaphorases;CaEGTA was Ineffective. EGTA effects on enzymes of supernatantand mitochondria were negligible, although Na2EGTA treatmentinduced cell aggregation and strong acidification of the medium. When microsomes from control cultures were solubilized with1% LPC and fractionated in high-efficiency gel permeation columns(FPLC) the diaphorase activities were found associated to threemajor proteins: (i) NADH-specific quinone reductase (NADH-QR)of 340 kDa; (ii) pyndine nucleotide-nonspecific quinone reductase(NAD(P)H-QR) of 85 kDa also having ferricyanide reductase activity;(iii) NADH-specific ferricyanide reductase (NADH-FCR) of 38kDa. The microsomes from EGTA-treated cells also showed a highlyactive NADH-QR having a larger molecular mass (440 kDa) thanin control cells. NAD(P)H-QR also showed increased activity.We conclude that external Ca2+ chelation induces changes indehydrogenase components in microsomes. Furthermore, prLPS probablyexert part of their effect on plants through Ca2+ chelation. Summary— The distribution of microtubules was investigated in Nicotiana tabacum pollen tubes at different stages of tube growth by immunofluorescence microscopy. Using specific antibodies, the presence of microtubules consisting of different tubulin isoforms was tested. α-, β- and tyrosinated α-tubulin were present within the tube, whereas the acetylated form was lacking. The presence of tubulin subunits in pollen tube extracts was also investigated by immunoblotting analyses. The use of a confocal laser scanning microscope integrated with computer-assisted imaging, allowed a detailed visualization of the microtubule distribution and organization. Cytoplasmic microtubules organized as short bundles with various orientations were detected at the apex of long tubes.  相似文献

Successful manual synthesis of the TD2.2 peptide acting as a blood–brain barrier shuttle was achieved. TD2.2 was successfully synthesised by sequential condensation of four protected peptide fragments on solid-phase settings, after several unsuccessful attempts using the stepwise approach. These fragments were chosen to minimise the number of demanding amino acids (in terms of coupling, Fmoc removal) in each fragment that are expected to hamper the overall synthetic process. Thus, the hydrophobic amino acids as well as Arg(Pbf) were strategically spread over multiple fragments rather than having them congested in one fragment. This study shows how a peptide that shows big challenges in the synthesis using the common stepwise elongation methodology can be synthesised with an acceptable purity. It also emphasises that choosing the right fragment with certain amino acid constituents is key for a successful synthesis. It is worth highlighting that lower amounts of reagents were required to synthesise the final peptide with an identical purity to that obtained by the automatic synthesiser.  相似文献
