The host ranges of a collection of 21 tick species found on wild mammals in the savanna, forests and coastal zone of Ghana suggested that most species were adapted to feeding mainly on host species within a single mammalian order, i.e. on artiodactyls (bovids/suids), carnivores, rodents or pholidotes (pangolins). Only a few species were dispersed evenly across a range of orders. Seven out of ten of the most common ticks on forest mammals were significantly associated with a particular host species or a group of closely related host species, which could be viewed as their major host or hosts, but they were also recorded much less frequently on a wide range of host species. Two other species were confined to their major hosts. Only one species appeared to be widely dispersed on forest mammals and to lack a particular major host. The majority of tick species therefore occurred on hosts with very distinctive biological, behavioural and ecological characteristics. The study provided no evidence to support the view that host specificity is an artefact of sampling. Finding that the tick species on Ghanaian wild mammals occurred on particular hosts, as well as in distinct habitats, indicated that tick-host associations are important for tick survival and confirmed the importance of climate and vegetation in tick distribution.  相似文献

The metabolic profiles of three wild mammals that vary in their trophic strategies, the herbivorous bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus), the granivorous wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), and the insectivorous white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens), were compared with that of a widely used strain of laboratory rat (Sprague Dawley). In conjunction with NMR spectroscopic investigations into the urine and blood plasma composition for these mammals, high resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS) 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was applied to investigate the composition of intact kidney samples. Adaptation to natural diet affects both renal metabolism and urinary profiles, and while these techniques have been used to study the metabolism of the laboratory rat little is known about wild small mammals. The species were readily separated by their urinary profiles using either crude metabolite ratios or statistical pattern recognition. Bank vole urine contained higher concentrations of aromatic amino acids compared with the other small mammals, while the laboratory rats produced relatively more hippurate. HRMAS 1H-NMR demonstrated striking differences in both lipid concentration and composition between the wild mammals and Sprague Dawley rats. Bank voles contained high concentrations of the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan in all tissue and biofluids studied. This study demonstrates the analytical power of combined NMR techniques for the study of inter-species metabolism and further demonstrates that metabolic data acquired on laboratory animals cannot be extended to wild species.  相似文献

Rats, rabbits, swine, guinea pigs, and monkeys were infected with anthrax spores, and their temperature responses were recorded. These were characteristic for a species and appeared independent of resistance or susceptibility of the species toward establishment of the disease. The rabbit appeared unique in that it not only failed to demonstrate a dose-response relationship over an 8-log dose range, but acted independently producing erratic body temperatures depending on spore dose. This limits the usefulness of the rabbit in studying anthrax pathogenesis, and poses questions regarding published data with the rabbit as the test animal.  相似文献

Summary The level of haptoglobin was determined in control rats and in rats infected withC. immitis. The haptoglobin levels in the infected group were significantly higher than in those in the control group. Selectins play a critical role in neutrophil recruitment to sites of inflammation, in tethering and rolling of neutrophils on vascular endothelium, as well as triggering beta(2)-integrin-mediated adhesion. We have previously demonstrated potential pro-inflammatory effects of soluble E-selectin upon neutrophil effector functions, using a soluble recombinant molecule (E-zz), which increased beta(2)-integrin-mediated adhesion, decreased beta(2)-integrin-dependent migration, and triggered reactive oxygen species generation and release. In this study, we have examined the intracellular signals following neutrophil activation by soluble E-selectin. We show that exposure of neutrophils to E-selectin and platelet-activating factor (PAF) in combination induced a synergistic effect upon beta(2)-integrin-mediated adhesion. Although soluble E-selectin did not induce Ca(2+) mobilization in neutrophils by itself, elevation of intracellular Ca(2+) was specifically prolonged in response to PAF but not leukotriene B(4) or N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe. The prolonged Ca(2+) mobilization observed in the presence of E-selectin was dependent on Ca(2+) influx from intracellular stores rather than influx of extracellular Ca(2+) through SKF 96365-sensitive channels. The specific alteration of Ca(2+) mobilization reported here appears not to have a role in the synergistic effects of E-selectin and PAF upon neutrophil O(2) release but may be involved in augmentation of beta(2)-integrin-mediated adhesion.  相似文献

Summary twenty seven field experiments were conducted to determine if there were differences between five barley cultivars in their ability to utilize soil nutrients. There were significant differences among cultivars in yield of grain and in concentration of all macro and micro nutrients examined in both the whole plant and grain.Gateway ranked the highest for the concentration of Na, Mn, and Cu in the whole plant and was among the cultivars with highest concentration of Ca, Fe, and Zn. Centennial had generally the lowest concentration of all the nutrients determined in the whole plant. For the concentrations of Na, Mg, and Cu in grain Gateway ranked highest, but ranked third for the concentrations of K, Ca, Fe, Mn, and Zn in grain. Galt had the highest K and Mg concentration and lowest Mn, Cu and Zn concentration in grain. Except for K concentration in grain, Centennial had the lowest concentrations of all other cationic nutrients in grain.Yield of grain rather than nutrient concentration was the most important criteria in determining the ranking of nutrient yields per hectare. Because of its high grain yield, Bonanza produced the largest yield of micronutrient cations and was second to Galt in production of macronutrient cations, although it was lowest in macronutrient cation concentration. Similarly, Bonanza and Galt had the lowest protein concentration, but produced the highest yield of protein per hectare.The implications for animal nutrition of different levels of nutrients between cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a Mr 6045 polypeptide first characterized for its ability to stimulate mitogenesis in epidermal and epithelial cells. The first step in the action of the growth factor is its binding to specific, high affinity membrane receptors. These receptors have been studied in a number of tissues and cell culture lines. The level of EGF receptors is modulated by many agents. EGF down-regulates its receptor. In addition, the number of EGF receptors is decreased by other growth factors (platelet-derived growth factor; transforming growth factor), by many tumor promoters and by viral transformation.
