Input-output (I-O) relationships were studied in cercal “thread-hair” sensilla (THS) on Periplaneta americana L. by recording from individual axons of THS while displacing the corresponding hair with a galvanometric device. Sinusoidal analysis was attempted and pulse- and ramplike displacements were then tested. The effects of stimulus orientation were also investigated. THS were spontaneously active and purely phasic and did not respond to sustained displacements. With small sinusoidal displacements (<30°) they behaved as a linear, secondorder lead system sensitive to velocity. With larger amplitudes, however, they exhibited prominent nonlinear features with minimal consequences of displacements at the extremes. Responses to other waveforms indicated secondorder response components. THS were directionally sensitive. Phasic behavior and the nonlinearities may be due to mechanical properties at the base of the hair. The spike-firing threshold may also contribute. Resting activity appears to be due to neuronal factors since it was not abolished by preventing hair movements. Transducer operations were simulated in a digital computer.  相似文献

Data on patterns of systematic and ocassional hunting of birds, mammals, reptiles, mollusks and insects by Stumptail macaques are reported for a period of ten months. Systematic hunting of water snails, terrestrial spiders, and land worms was conducted by all age classes, except infants, and both sexes. Of the occasional hunting of birds, large lizards, large frogs, and field mice, the adult females conducted 70%, the adult males 12%, the two year old females 12%, and the two year old males 6%. The differences between males and females were statistically significant (.05 confidence level). Females dominated the hunt and were more interested in meateating than the males. This contrasts strikingly with the data reported for baboons and chimpanzees in which the males dominate the hunt. Of all the prey hunted ocassionally, 76% was shared. The differences between shared and not sared prey were statistically significant (.05 confidence level). All age classes, including infants, participated in meat-sharing. Three types of meat-sharing are described: mother-offspring, hunter-close-friend, and piece-dropping. The prey was shared with genetic relatives, and with close and sistant friends in this order. Pearson’s correlation coeficients between rank of hunter and number of hunts and between rank of hunter and number of individuals with whom the prey was shared yielded +.866 and +.890 respectively. Meat-sharing seems to be similar to that observed for baboons but some differences exist between baboons and chimpanzees on the one hand and Stumptails on the other. Dominance relations in our Stumptails seem to act as the context determining the direction and the type of sharing. An increase in hunting activity during the study period is suggested to be the result of the prey’s migratory and breeding patterns, of environmental changes, and of the high activity scores and physiological states of the adult-females in the troop. Although not hunted, reactions to snakes, iguanas, scorpions, and gulls are also described. The water-soluble part of the dried venom from the scorpion, Tityus serrulatus Lutz and Mello (range, Southeastern Brazil), showed 16 polypeptide bands on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This material exhibited toxic and hyaluronidase activity but no phospholipase, phosphodiesterase, protease, or fibrinolytic activity. Fractionation on glycinamide-treated Sephadex G-50 afforded three protein fractions, which were non-toxic, equitoxic, and three times more toxic than the water-soluble venom. Subsequent separation of the toxic fractions on carboxymethyl-cellulose with phosphate buffers furnished five toxic components, which were further purified on carboxymethyl-cellulose with a salt gradient in acetate buffer. Toxin γ, the major and most basic toxin, is a 62-residue protein that, unlike other scorpion toxins, contains methionine. Automated Edman degradation showed the amino-terminal sequence to be H-Lys-Glu-Gly-Tyr-Leu-Met-Asp-His-Glu-Gly-Cys-Lys-Leu-Ser-Cys-Phe-Ile-Arg-Pro-Ser-Gly-Tyr-Cys-Gly-Arg-Glu-Cys-Gly-Ile-. Toxin γ is the first example of a fifth structural type of mammalian toxin from scorpion venom. Its amino-terminal sequence shows greater homology with toxins similar to Centruroides suffusus suffusus toxin III and Androctonus australis toxin II than with toxins similar to A. australis toxin I or Bhutus occitanus tunetanus toxin I.  相似文献

Starlings' preferences for constant versus variable food sourceswere studied in the laboratory. The constant alternative gavea fixed amount of food after a fixed delay. The variable alternativeoffered either a varying amount of food after a fixed delay(treatment A) or a fixed amount of food after a variable delay(treatment B). In both treatments the ratio of amount of foodover trial length (the sum of intertrial interval plus delayand handling times) of the constant alternative equaled theaverage of the two ratios of the variable alternative. The variableratios were 30% higher and 30% smaller than the fixed ratio.In free-choice trials (both options available in each trial),the subjects were risk-averse or indifferent in treatment Aand indifferent or riskprone in treatment B. In no-choice trials(only one source available per trial), the latency to respondwas longer in the variable than in the constant source in treatmentA and the opposite in treatment B. The greater preference forvariability in time than for variability in reward amount isnot consistent with either maximizing the ratio of expectedenergy over expected time or the expected ratio of energy overtime for individual trials. There was a negative correlationbetween individual intake rate and degree of risk pronenessfor both kinds of variability. We present a model of choicebased on an information-processing theory for temporal memorythat accounts for the different effects of variability in delayand in amount but cannot explain the effects of intake rate.[Behav Ecol 1991;2:301–308]  相似文献

Field evaluations were made of a baiting system designed for use by regulatory agencies in suppressing populations of undesirable feral honey bees, Apis mellifera L. (e.g., bees posing hazards [especially Africanized bees] and colonies infested with parasitic mites). Bees from feral or simulated feral (hived) colonies were lured with honey and Nasonov pheromone components to feeders dispensing sucrose-honey syrup. After 1-3 wk of passive training to feeders, colonies were treated during active foraging by replacing untreated syrup with syrup containing 500 ppm (mg/liter) acephate (Orthene 75 S). In four trials using hived colonies on Grant Terre Island, LA., 21 of 29 colonies foraged actively enough at baits to be treated, and 20 of the 22 treated were destroyed. In the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas (two trials at each of two trials), treatments killed 11 of 16 colonies (6 of 10 hived; 50 of 6 feral). Overall results showed that all 11 colonies that collected greater than 25 mg acephate died, whereas 3 of 10 colonies receiving less than 25 mg survived. Delivering adequate doses required a minimum of approximately 100 bees per target colony simultaneously collecting treated syrup. The system destroyed target colonies located up to nearly 700 m away from baits. Major factors limiting efficacy were conditions inhibiting foraging at baits (e.g., competing natural nectar sources and temperatures and winds that restricted bee flight).  相似文献

Nigericin is a monocarboxylic polyether molecule described as a mobile K+ ionophore unable to transport Li+ and Cs+ across natural or artificial membranes. This paper shows that the ion carrier molecule forms complexes of equivalent energy demands with Li+, Cs+, Na+, Rb+, and K+. This is in accordance with the similar values of the complex stability constants obtained from nigericin with the five alkali metal cations assayed. On the other hand, nigericinalkali metal cation binding isotherms show faster rates for Li+ and Cs+ than for Na+, K+, and Rb+, in conditions where the carboxylic proton does not dissociate. Furthermore, proton NMR spectra of nigericin-Li+ and nigericin-Cs+ complexes show wide broadenings, suggesting strong cation interaction with the ionophore; in contrast, the complexes with Na+, K+, and Rb+ show only clear-cut chemical shifts. These latter results support the view that nigericin forms highly stable complexes with Li+ and Cs+ and contribute to the explanation for the inability of this ionophore to transport the former cations in conditions where it catalyzes a fast transport of K+>Rb+>Na+.Part of the results of this paper were presented at the 14th International Congress of Biochemistry in Prague, Czechoslovakia.  相似文献

The alpha- and beta-phosphorothioate analogs of UDP-Gal and UDP-Glc, in which a sulfur is exchanged for a non-bridging oxygen at one of the phosphate groups, have been synthesized and tested for their resistance to enzymatic degradation and for their usefulness in glycosyltransferase reactions. The alpha analogs were found to be no more resistant to hydrolysis than the native nucleotide sugars, but as previously reported (R. B. Marchase et al. (1987) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 916: 157) the beta S analogs were approximately 10 times more resistant. The beta S analog and native UDP-Glc were found to have comparable Km's when used in assays for glucosylphosphoryl dolichol synthase with rat liver and hen oviduct microsomes, although the apparent Vmax of the reaction was about twofold higher for the analog, presumably due to its resistance to degradation. Partially purified 4 beta-galactosyltransferase exhibited a Vmax with (beta S)UDP-Gal that was only slightly lower than that with UDP-Gal and a Km that was slightly increased. The effectiveness of the analog was especially apparent in assays for 4 beta-galactosyltransferase on intact sperm and in rat liver homogenates, in which hydrolysis of the normal substrate was very rapid and net incorporation was at least 4 times greater with the beta S analog in each system.  相似文献

The two NADP(+)-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenases present in the green alga Chlorella fusca, namely, the phosphorylating (chloroplastic) enzyme and the non-phosphorylating (cytosolic) enzyme, are differently affected by the trophic conditions prevailing in the cell cultures. The addition of metabolizable sugars to cell cultures growing in the light promotes a marked decrease of the phosphorylating enzyme activity down to a barely detectable cellular level. In contrast, the cellular level of the non-phosphorylating enzyme is even enhanced in the presence of such sugars. These effects are not observed, however, with a number of non-assimilable sugar analogs. After sugar removal, a recovery of the phosphorylating activity--in a process which is inhibited by cycloheximide but not by lincomycin--is observed in illuminated cells but not in darkness, thus indicating a light-dependent nuclear synthesis of the chloroplastic enzyme. It seems therefore that the two dehydrogenases are adaptative enzymes subject to differential regulation by nutritional conditions.  相似文献
