Many wetland restoration projects occur on former agricultural soils that have a history of disturbance and fertilization, making them prone to phosphorus (P) release upon flooding. To study the relationship between P release and hydrologic regime, we collected soil cores from three restoration wetlands and three undisturbed wetlands around Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon, U.S.A. Soil cores were subjected to one of three hydrologic regimes—flooded, moist, and dry—for 7.5 weeks, and P fluxes were measured upon reflooding. Soils from restoration wetlands released P upon reflooding regardless of the hydrologic regime, with the greatest releases coming from soils that had been flooded or dried. Undisturbed wetland soils released P only after drying. Patterns in P release can be explained by a combination of physical and biological processes, including the release of iron‐bound P due to anoxia in the flooded treatment and the mineralization of organic P under aerobic conditions in the dry treatment. Higher rates of soil P release from restoration wetland soils, particularly under flooded conditions, were associated with higher total P concentrations compared with undisturbed wetland soils. We conclude that maintaining moist soil is the means to minimize P release from recently flooded wetland soils. Alternatively, prolonged flooding provides a means of liberating excess labile P from former agricultural soils while minimizing continued organic P mineralization and soil subsidence.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine the number of deaths attributable to HIV infection among men aged 15-64 in a geographically defined population in the United Kingdom. DESIGN--Retrospective review of death certificates and linkage with local and national HIV and AIDS surveillance data. SETTING--Riverside District Health Authority, London. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Numbers of deaths attributed to HIV infection in male residents of Riverside aged 15-64 and 15-44 over a six month period. Proportion of attributed deaths were (i) identified from death certificates by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys as being due to HIV infection and (ii) reported as cases of AIDS or HIV related deaths to the Public Health Laboratory Service Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre. RESULTS--34 of 213 (16%) deaths in men aged 15-64 and 27 of 69 (39%) deaths in men aged 15-44 were attributed to HIV infection. Six of 33 (18%) attributed deaths were identified by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys and 32/34 (94%) were reported to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre. CONCLUSIONS--HIV infection was the leading cause of death in male residents of Riverside aged 15-44 and the third commonest cause of death in those aged 15-64. Most individuals dying of known HIV infection were reported to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre but identification of the true cause of death from the process of death certification was poor. Measures to improve the certification of HIV and AIDS or the use of AIDS surveillance information correctly to code the cause of death needs to be considered to ensure that the true impact of HIV infection is reflected in routine mortality statistics.  相似文献

Self-rooted olive ( Olea europaea L.) plants were grown in hydroponics at various NaCl concentrations (from 0 to 200m M ) for 28 to 32 days followed by 28 to 30 days of relief from salinity over two growing seasons. Olive leaves accumulated both glucose and mannitol during the period of salinity stress. The concentrations of fructose, myo -inositol, galactose, galactinol, sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose were not significantly affected by salinity. Starch content was decreased by salinity. The mannitol/glucose and mannitol/soluble carbohydrates ratios increased as the external NaCl concentration was increased, but returned to the control levels during the relief period. The increase in mannitol or glucose molar concentrations, expressed on a leaf tissue water basis, was partially due to a reduction in leaf tissue water content under salinity stress. However, an increase in mannitol concentration was also observed when expressed on a dry weight basis. The accumulation of mannitol in leaf tissue preceded any reduction in leaf area rate or net assimilation rate. The increase in leaf mannitol or glucose concentration was positively correlated with the increasing level of salinity at the root zone, but not with the accumulation of Na+ in the shoot. The role of mannitol. a potential osmoregulator in leaf mesophyll during salinity stress, is discussed in relation to the complex carbohydrate composition of olive leaves.  相似文献

Thirty-six mesocosms, each containing a two-species community of Trifolium repens (C3 legume) and Stenotaphrum secundatum (C4 grass), were grown in sand with three nutrient regimes, zero N low P, zero N high P and supplied N high P, under ambient (aCO2) and twice ambient CO2 (eCO2) for 15 months in two greenhouses. Aboveground annual production in the P limited mesocosms did not respond to eCO2 and was reduced by 50% relative to mesocosms with an adequate P supply, where dry-matter production was increased by 12–24% under eCO2. The stimulation of production by eCO2 occurred throughout the year despite a clear seasonality in growth. There was no effect of eCO2 on leaf area index (LAI), which was larger under high P than low P. Live root mass at the end of the experiment was higher under eCO2 in all nutrient treatments, but the response of total belowground C (root+soil) to eCO2 depended on P treatment. Under limiting P, belowground C was not significantly changed by eCO2 (2–2.3 t belowground C ha−1). Under high P supply, both root and soil C pools increased under eCO2. Under aCO2, low P supply increased belowground C by 0.7–1 t C ha−1 above that added by the high P treatment. P is commonly limiting in Australian ecosystems and the majority of ecosystem N input is provided by biological N fixation. Consequently, the response of legumes to eCO2 is of particular importance. These results demonstrate that at low P availability, there is likely to be only a limited response of biomass production by T. repens to eCO2, which in turn may constrain any ecosystem response.  相似文献

Accurate knowledge of the response of root turnover to a changing climate is needed to predict growth and produce carbon cycle models. A soil warming system and shading were used to vary soil temperature and received radiation independently in a temperate grassland dominated by Holcus lanatus L. Minirhizotrons allowed root growth and turnover to be examined non‐destructively. In two short‐term (8 week) experiments, root responses to temperature were seasonally distinct. Root number increased when heating was applied during spring, but root death increased during autumnal heating. An experiment lasting 12 months demonstrated that any positive response to temperature was short‐lived and that over a full growing season, soil warming led to a reduction in root number and mass due to increased root death during autumn and winter. Root respiration was also insensitive to soil temperature over much of the year. In contrast, root growth was strongly affected by incident radiation. Root biomass, length, birth rate, number and turnover were all reduced by shading. Photosynthesis in H. lanatus exhibited some acclimation to shading, but assimilation rates at growth irradiance were still lower in shaded plants. The negative effects of shading and soil warming on roots were additive. Comparison of root data with environmental measurements demonstrated a number of positive relationships with photosynthetically active radiation, but not with soil temperature. This was true both across the entire data set and within a shade treatment. These results demonstrate that root growth is unlikely to be directly affected by increased soil temperatures as a result of global warming, at least in temperate areas, and that predictions of net primary productivity should not be based on a positive root growth response to temperature.  相似文献

Summary α-Fetoprotein (AFP), albumin, and transferrin production by two rat hepatoma cell lines, McA-RH 7777 (7777) and McA-RH 8994 (8994), was determined after treatment with hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA, 2 to 6 mM). Radioimmunoassays were used to determine the levels of both secreted and intracellular AFP, albumin, and transferrin. Line 7777 normally produces large quantities of AFP and small quantities of albumin, thus resembling the less differentiated fetal liver with respect to the synthesis of these two proteins. Line 8994 normally produces small quantities of AFP and relatively larger amounts of albumin, thus resembling hepatic functions characteristic of a more differentiated state. After treatment with HMBA for a period of 28 to 96 h a threefold increase in AFP secretion by 7777 and a dose related increase in AFP, albumin, and transferrin secretion by 8994 were observed. In contrast, the secretion of albumin and transferrin in 7777 was inhibited by 60 and 40%, respectively, following treatment with HMBA. The intracellular concentrations of AFP in 7777 and AFP, albumin, and transferrin in 8994 were increased by treatment with HMBA indicating that HMBA is able to stimulate the synthesis of these proteins. The intracellular concentration of AFP, albumin, and transferrin in 7777, when expressed as a percentage of the extracellular concentration of these proteins, did not change significantly during HMBA treatment, indicating that the observed decrease in secreted albumin and transferrin by 7777 is due to decreased synthesis. Similarly, in Line 8994, when the intracellular concentration of the three proteins was expressed as percentage of the extracellular concentration, the only significant change observed was an increase in AFP after 72 h of HMBA (5 mM) treatment. The observed changes in the synthesis of AFP, albumin, and transferrin in both 7777 and 8994 after HMBA treatment were reversible, as judged by the return to control values upon removal of HMBA from the culture medium. Thus, HMBA stimulates synthesis of the oncofetal protein AFP, a result that appears to be independent of the stage of differentiation of the cell. However, its effect on the synthesis of albumin and transferrin are opposite in the two cell lines, suggesting that the regulation of the synthesis of these two proteins is controlled by factors or conditions that are dependent upon the stage of differentiation of the hepatoma cell lines.  相似文献
