Entomopathogenic nematodes are natural enemies and effective biological control agents of subterranean insect herbivores. Interactions between herbivores, plants, and entomopathogenic nematodes are mediated by plant defense pathways. These pathways can induce release of volatiles and recruit entomopathogenic nematodes. Stimulation of these plant defense pathways for induced defense against belowground herbivory may enhance biological control in the field. Knowledge of the factors affecting entomopathogenic nematode behaviour belowground is needed to effectively implement such strategies. To that end, we explore the effect of elicitor, elicitor dose, mechanical damage, and entomopathogenic nematode release distance on recruitment of entomopathogenic nematode infective juveniles to corn seedlings. Increasing doses of methyl jasmonate and methyl salicylate elicitors recruited more entomopathogenic nematodes as did mechanical damage. Recruitment of entomopathogenic nematodes was higher at greater release distances. These results suggest entomopathogenic nematodes are highly tuned to plant status and present a strategy for enhancing biological control using elicitor-stimulated recruitment of entomopathogenic nematodes. 相似文献

Chromosome studies in six wild-caught specimens of Cebus apella xanthosternos showed a distinctive chromosome pair number 11 that made it possible to distinguish this subspecies from other Cebus apella. The characteristic chromosome pair had intercalar heterochromatin unlike the “standard” chromosome type of Cebus apella and other species of the same genus, in which this chromosome pair shows a large, terminal, heterochromatic block. A comparison at the chromosomal level between different Cebus apella populations suggests that chromosome 11 in Cebus apella xanthosternos is a derived chromosome that has probably become fixed in this subspecies, either by selection or by drift in a small isolated population. 相似文献

When carrying out experiments on the production of the edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju in the Laboratory of Edible Mushrooms, Universidade Federal de Lavras, Lavras, Brazil, in the second half of 2007, the presence of beetles later identified as belonging to the species Mycotretus apicalis was verified. This is the first recorded instance of this insect in cultures of P. sajor-caju in Brazil. The larvae and adults of this insect feed on the fruiting bodies of commercial harvests, resulting in reduction in mushroom quality. To provide evaluation of the injuries caused by these insects, substrates colonized by P. sajor-caju were infested with 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 insects per block of substrate being the qualitative and quantitative losses then noted. Despite the lack of an observed decrease in biological efficiency, the injuries caused by these insects affected the commercial quality of the mushrooms, which may result in economic losses. The results showed that infestations of 32 insects per 0.8 kg of substrate led to a depreciation in the prices of mushrooms meant to be sold. 相似文献
