Chloroplasts are believed to be descendants of ancestral cyanobacteria that had peptidoglycan layer between the outer and the inner membranes. Historically, the glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa and the rhizopod Paulinella chromatophora were believed to harbor symbiotic cyanobacteria having peptidoglycan, which were conventionally named “cyanelles”. In addition, the complete set of genes involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan has been found in the moss Physcomitrella patens and some plants and algae. The presence of peptidoglycan-like structures was demonstrated by a new metabolic labeling technique in P. patens. However, many green algae and all known red algae lack peptidoglycan-related genes. That is the reason why we questioned the origin of peptidoglycan-synthesizing enzymes in the chloroplasts of the green algae and plants. We performed phylogenetic analysis of ten enzymes involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan exploiting the Gclust homolog clusters and additional genomic data. As expected, all the identified genes encoded in the chromatophore genome of P. chromatophora were closely related to cyanobacterial homologs. In the green algae and plants, only two genes, murA and mraY, were found to be closely related to cyanobacterial homologs. The origins of all other genes were diverse. Unfortunately, the origins of C. paradoxa genes were not clearly determined because of incompleteness of published genomic data. We discuss on the probable evolutionary scenarios to explain the mostly non-cyanobacterial origins of the biosynthetic enzymes of chloroplast peptidoglycan: A plausible one includes extensive multiple horizontal gene transfers during the early evolution of Viridiplantae. 相似文献

The biochemical mechanisms underlying thidiazuron (TDZ)-induced regeneration in plant cells have not been clearly elucidated.
Exposure of leaf explants of Echinacea purpurea to a medium containing TDZ results in undifferentiated cell proliferation and differentiated growth as mixed shoot organogenesis
and somatic embryogenesis. The current studies were undertaken to determine the potential roles of auxin, indoleamines, and
ion signaling in the dedifferentiation and redifferentiation of plant cells. E. purpurea leaf explants were found to contain auxin and the related indoleamine neurotransmitters, melatonin, and serotonin. The levels
of these endogenous indoleamines were increased by exposure to TDZ associated with the induction of regeneration. The auxin-transport
inhibitor 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and auxin action inhibitor, p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid decreased the TDZ-induced regeneration but increased concentrations of endogenous serotonin
and melatonin. As well, inhibitors of calcium and sodium transport significantly reduced TDZ-induced morphogenesis while increasing
endogenous indoleamine content. These data indicate that TDZ-induced regeneration is the manifestation of a metabolic cascade
that includes an initial signaling event, accumulation, and transport of endogenous plant signals such as auxin and melatonin,
a system of secondary messengers, and a concurrent stress response. 相似文献

Hybridization can drive the convergence of territorial and sexual signals. However, non-genetic processes such as competition,
environment matching, or cultural transmission, also generate this pattern. We investigated the effect of hybridization on
song convergence between two interspecifically territorial warblers in a moving hybrid zone. We confirmed song convergence
in each species. Using an AFLP-based genetic index, we detected an effect of genetics on song convergence in Hippolais polyglotta, the expanding species. Evidence was weaker for H. icterina, the receding species. In moving zones, introgression is expected to be larger in the expanding species than in the receding.
Thus, the asymmetric contribution of the genetic index to convergence was consistent with expectations for genetically determined
traits in moving hybrid zones, and the observed introgression pattern of AFLP markers. However, the geographical location
of individuals had an effect on song variation too when genetics was accounted for, suggesting that convergence also has non-genetic
explanations. We examine the possible role of alternative processes to that of hybridization and discuss their conflicting

Estimating fungal growth is important in processes of soil bioremediation. It has been demonstrated that ergosterol is a good
indicator of fungal biomass in solid substrata. In the present study were evaluated the effects upon the ergosterol rate of
Lentinus crinitus Berk. and Psilocybe castanella Peck through the culture conditions of these fungi, which are evaluated for the bioremediation of soils contaminated by organochlorates.
A good correlation between fungal biomass and ergosterol was observed for both species. The culture conditions did not influence
the ergosterol rate of L. crinitus. Yet the ergosterol rate of P. castanella was influenced from 35 days of culture and when grown in the presence of 15.00 g hexachlorobenzene l−1 of culture medium. So it is possible to estimate growth of both species using ergosterol as indicator in processes of soil

There is a special emphasis today on integrating traditional healing within health services. However, most areas in which
there is a system of traditional healing have undergone colonization and a number of pressures suppressing tradition for hundreds
of years. The question arises as to how one can understand today’s tradition in light of earlier traditions. This article
is based on material collected in Sámi areas of Finnmark and Nord-Troms Norway; it compares local healing traditions with
what is known of earlier shamanic traditions in the area. The study is based on 27 interviews among healers and their patients.
The findings suggest that although local healing traditions among the Sámi in northern Norway have undergone major transformations
during the last several hundred years, they may be considered an extension of a long-standing tradition with deep roots in

This article comprises a literature analysis of 41 river rehabilitation projects to assess the short-term (5 years) ability
of indicator groups to demonstrate progress towards river rehabilitation goals. Positive indications were compared to land-use,
river size, rehabilitation intervention and time. A questionnaire was developed to investigate river manager’s interpretation
of rehabilitation success and to assess their level of adherence to recommendations in the literature with regard to rehabilitation
assessment on a conceptual level. A total of 54 responses were received from respondents based in Germany, The Netherlands
and the United Kingdom. The results indicate that macroinvertebrate indicators, while widely used in assessing river rehabilitation
efforts, exhibited a lower frequency of positive responses than most other indicator types in the short term. Conversely,
terrestrial floodplain indicators exhibited the most frequent level of positive response for all ecological type indicators
leading to recommendations for further investigations into their use for short-term monitoring. Assessment procedures recommended
in literature are largely followed, illustrating the advances that have been made with regard to assessment planning. Indicator
responses are influenced by scale factors, for example, land-use and river size, that are often not considered by rehabilitation
managers. While an emphasis is placed on ecological, hydrological and morphological indicators in monitoring schemes, the
socioeconomic perspective (emphasized in the literature as forming an integral part of the river system) is neglected. 相似文献
