The growth of the maxillary canine teeth of the babirusa (genus Babyrousa) was studied on a sample of 149 adult male babirusa skulls from twenty-two international museum and private collections. Skulls from Buru, Sulawesi and the Togian Islands were represented. The continuous growth process was summarised into five stages (‘A’–‘E’) according to the position of the tip of the tooth over the bones of the skull. The supracutaneous portion of the tooth grew in a curve-linear fashion dorso-caudally, and was orientated such that the tips grew towards the midline of the cranium. The teeth of Sulawesi and Togian babirusa grew more dorsally over the nasal and frontal bones. Measurements were made on a subset of 45 teeth from Sulawesi babirusa skulls. The subcutaneous portion of the maxillary canine tooth (n = 22) increased in size from 37.3 mm (95% CI: 29.9–44.4 mm) in growth stage ‘B’ to 54.3 mm (49.4–59.2 mm) in growth stage ‘E’ as the erupted portion of the tooth (n = 19) lengthened from 81.3 mm (43.8–118.9 mm) in growth stage ‘A’ to 215.3 mm (177.8–252.9 mm) in growth stage ‘E’. The apical end of the tooth was open and thin-walled. The lumen of the tooth was filled with a cone of well vascularised dental pulp that extended almost to the tip of the tooth. The angle of curvature of the tooth within the alveolus (n = 22) decreased from 19.8 (17.3–22.3) degrees in growth stage ‘B’ to 7.4 (5.7–9.0) degrees in growth stage ‘E’. The corresponding supracutaneous angle of curvature (n = 25) reduced from 36.8 (33.6–40.1) degrees in growth stage ‘A’ to 10.7 (8.6–12.8) degrees in growth stage ‘E’.  相似文献

A worldwide survey of babirusa skulls curated in museum and private collections located 431 that were from adult males and had retained at least one maxillary canine tooth. Eighty-three of these skulls were identified as exhibiting aberrant maxillary canine tooth growth. Twenty-four of the skulls represented babirusa from Buru and the Sula Islands, and forty-five skulls represented babirusa from Sulawesi and the Togian Islands. The remaining series of fourteen babirusa skulls originally came from zoo animals. Fifteen skulls showed anomalous alveolar and tooth rotation in a median plane. Twenty-nine skulls had maxillary canine teeth that did not grow symmetrically towards the median plane of the cranium. Fourteen skulls showed evidence that the tips of one or both maxillary canine teeth had eroded the nasal bones. Twenty-one skulls had maxillary canine teeth that had eroded the frontal bones. The teeth of two skulls had eroded a parietal bone. One skull had two maxillary canines arising from an adjacent pair of alveoli on the left side of the cranium. Three skulls exhibited alveoli with no formed maxillary canine teeth in them. Analysis suggested that approximately 12% of the adult male babirusa in the wild experience erosion of the cranial bony tissues as a result of maxillary canine tooth growth. There was no skeletal evidence that maxillary canine teeth penetrate the eye.  相似文献

Rhodopseudomonas palustris is a species of purple photosynthetic bacteria that has a multigene family of puc genes that encode the alpha and beta apoproteins, which form the LH2 complexes. A genetic dissection strategy has been adopted in order to try and understand which spectroscopic form of LH2 these different genes produce. This paper presents a characterisation of one of the deletion mutants generated in this program, the pucBAd only mutant. This mutant produces an unusual spectroscopic form of LH2 that only has a single large NIR absorption band at 800 nm. Spectroscopic and pigment analyses on this complex suggest that it has basically a similar overall structure as that of the wild-type HL LH2 complex. The mutant has the unique phenotype where the mutant LH2 complex is only produced when cells are grown at LL. At HL the mutant only produces the LH1-RC core complex.  相似文献

Plantago lanceolata and Trifolium repens were grown under ambient (400 μmol mol–1) and elevated (650 μmol mol–1) atmospheric CO2 conditions. Plants were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae and given a phosphorus supply in the form of bonemeal. Six sequential harvests were taken in order to determine whether the effect of elevated CO2 on internal mycorrhizal colonization and external hyphal production was independent of the stimulatory effect of elevated CO2 on plant growth. At a given time, elevated CO2 increased the percentage of root length colonized (RLC), the total length of colonized root and the external mycorrhizal hyphal (EMH) density and decreased the ratio of EMH to total length of colonized root. When plant size was taken into account, the CO2 effect on RLC and total length of colonized root was greatly reduced (and only apparent for early harvests in T. repens) and the effects on the EMH parameters disappeared. Root tissue P concentration was unchanged at elevated CO2, but there was a decrease in shoot P at the later harvests. There was no direct effect of elevated CO2 on P inflow for the earlier period (< 50 d) of the experiment. However, over the last period, there was a significant negative effect of elevated CO2 on P inflow for both species, independent of plant size. It is concluded that elevated CO2 had no direct effect on mycorrhizal colonization or external hyphal production, and that any observed effects on a time basis were due to faster growing plants at elevated CO2. However, for older plants, elevated CO2 had a direct negative effect on P inflow. This decrease in P inflow coincides with the observed decrease in shoot P concentration. This is discussed in terms of downregulation of photosynthesis often seen in elevated CO2 grown plants, and the potential for mycorrhizas (via external hyphal turnover) to alleviate the phenomenon. The direction for future research is highlighted, especially in relation to carbon flow to and storage in the soil.  相似文献

Moderate exercise elicits a relative postexercise hypotension that is caused by an increase in systemic vascular conductance. Previous studies have shown that skeletal muscle vascular conductance is increased postexercise. It is unclear whether these hemodynamic changes are limited to skeletal muscle vascular beds. The aim of this study was to determine whether the splanchnic and/or renal vascular beds also contribute to the rise in systemic vascular conductance during postexercise hypotension. A companion study aims to determine whether the cutaneous vascular bed is involved in postexercise hypotension (Wilkins BW, Minson CT, and Halliwill JR. J Appl Physiol 97: 2071-2076, 2004). Heart rate, arterial pressure, cardiac output, leg blood flow, splanchnic blood flow, and renal blood flow were measured in 13 men and 3 women before and through 120 min after a 60-min bout of exercise at 60% of peak oxygen uptake. Vascular conductances of leg, splanchnic, and renal vascular beds were calculated. One hour postexercise, mean arterial pressure was reduced (79.1 +/- 1.7 vs. 83.4 +/- 1.8 mmHg; P < 0.05), systemic vascular conductance was increased by approximately 10%, leg vascular conductance was increased by approximately 65%, whereas splanchnic (16.0 +/- 1.8 vs. 18.5 +/- 2.4 ml.min(-1).mmHg(-1); P = 0.13) and renal (20.4 +/- 3.3 vs. 17.6 +/- 2.6 ml.min(-1).mmHg(-1); P = 0.14) vascular conductances were unchanged compared with preexercise. This suggests there is neither vasoconstriction nor vasodilation in the splanchnic and renal vasculature during postexercise hypotension. Thus the splanchnic and renal vascular beds neither directly contribute to nor attenuate postexercise hypotension.  相似文献

Structural adaptations that occur in the diaphragm muscle of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), namely an increase in type I fibers and a decrease in type II fibers, have been explored in terms of the active contractile properties of the diaphragm. The aim of this study was to test the passive properties of the diaphragm by measuring the force response of relaxed diaphragm muscle fibers to stretching to determine the effect of COPD on these properties. Costal diaphragm biopsies were taken from patients with COPD and from controls with normal pulmonary function. From these biopsies, titin expression was assessed in diaphragm homogenates by gel electrophoresis, and the restoring force was measured by incremental stretching of single fibers in the relaxed state and measuring the force response to stretching. A quadratic model was used to illustrate the relationship between restoring force and muscle fiber length, and it revealed that COPD fibers generate significantly lower restoring forces than control fibers as judged by the area under the force-length curve. Furthermore, this finding applies to both type I and type II fibers. Gel electrophoresis revealed different titin isoforms in COPD and controls, consistent with the conclusion that COPD results not only in a change in muscle fiber-type distribution but in a structural change in the titin molecule in all muscle fiber types within the diaphragm. This may assist the muscle with the energetic changes in the length of the diaphragm required during breathing in COPD.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exercise on extravascular lung water as it may relate to pulmonary gas exchange. Ten male humans underwent measures of maximal oxygen uptake (Vo2 max) in two conditions: normoxia (N) and normobaric hypoxia of 15% O2 (H). Lung density was measured by quantified MRI before and 48.0 +/- 7.4 and 100.7 +/- 15.1 min following 60 min of cycling exercise in N (intensity = 61.6 +/- 9.5% Vo2 max) and 55.5 +/- 9.8 and 104.3 +/- 9.1 min following 60 min cycling exercise in H (intensity = 65.4 +/- 7.1% hypoxic Vo2 max), where Vo2 max = 65.0 +/- 7.5 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) (N) and 54.1 +/- 7.0 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) (H). Two subjects demonstrated mild exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia (EIAH) [minimum arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2 min) = 94.5% and 93.8%], and seven subjects demonstrated moderate EIAH (SaO2 min = 91.4 +/- 1.1%) as measured noninvasively during the Vo2 max test in N. Mean lung densities, measured once preexercise and twice postexercise, were 0.177 +/- 0.019, 0.181 +/- 0.019, and 0.173 +/- 0.019 g/ml (N) and 0.178 +/- 0.021, 0.174 +/- 0.022, and 0.176 +/- 0.019 g/ml (H), respectively. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found in lung density following exercise in either condition or between conditions. Transient interstitial pulmonary edema did not occur following sustained steady-state cycling exercise in N or H, indicating that transient edema does not result from pulmonary capillary leakage during sustained submaximal exercise.  相似文献
