Why do females of socially monogamous species engage in extra-pair copulations? This long-standing question remains a puzzle, because the benefits of female promiscuous behavior often do not seem to outweigh the costs. Genetic constraint models offer an answer by proposing that female promiscuity emerges through selection favoring alleles that are either beneficial for male reproductive success (intersexual pleiotropy hypothesis) or beneficial for female fecundity (intrasexual pleiotropy hypothesis). A previous quantitative genetic study on captive zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, reported support for the first, but not for the second hypothesis. Here, we re-examine both hypotheses based on data from lines selected for high and low male courtship rate. In contrast to previous conclusions, our new analyses clearly reject the hypothesis that male and female promiscuity are genetically homologous traits. We find some support for a positive genetic correlation between female promiscuity and fecundity. This study also shows that the behavioral outcome of extra-pair courtships primarily depends on individual-specific female preferences and not on the “attractiveness” of the social mate. In contrast, patterns of paternity are strongly influenced by the social partner and the pair bond, presumably reflecting variation in copulation behavior, fertility, or sperm competitiveness.  相似文献

The EGFR signalling cascade is responsible for coordinating a wide variety of events during Drosophila eye development. It remains something of a mystery how it is that cells are able to interpret the signal so as to choose the appropriate response from the battery of possibilities: division, differentiation, cell shape change and so on. Since the cascade is essentially linear below the receptor, different cellular responses cannot be regulated by alternative signal transduction pathways. The main diversity lies upstream, in the multiple activating ligands. Spitz, Gurken and Vein have been long studied, but little is known about the physiological functions of the fourth ligand, Keren, although various roles have been predicted based on the differences between mutants in the known ligands and those of the receptor. Here, we have isolated a mutant in the keren gene, and demonstrate that Keren does indeed participate in EGFR signalling in the eye, where it acts redundantly with Spitz to control R8 spacing, cell clustering and survival. Thus, specificity cannot be determined by ligand choice, and must instead be a consequence of cell-intrinsic factors, although we speculate that there may be some quantitative differences in signalling elicited by the two ligands.  相似文献

(2007a,b) presented a quantitative genetic theory of multilevel selection and showed how to estimate the relevant parameters using standard restricted maximum-likelihood (REML) methodology. Extending their results we develop a wider class of models that provide a more realistic framework for capturing the effects of interacting individuals. Maternal effects can have lasting fitness consequences for offspring, but these effects are often difficult to disentangle from associated responses in offspring traits. We studied persistent maternal effects on offspring survival in North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) by manipulating maternal nutrition without altering the post-emergent nutritional environment experienced by offspring. This was accomplished by providing supplemental food to reproductive females over winter and during reproduction, but removing the supplemental food from the system prior to juvenile emergence. We then monitored juvenile dispersal, settlement and survival from birth to 1 year of age. Juveniles from supplemented mothers experienced persistent and magnifying survival advantages over juveniles from control mothers long after supplemental food was removed. These maternal effects on survival persisted, despite no observable effect on traits normally associated with high offspring quality, such as body size, dispersal distance or territory quality. However, supplemented mothers did provide their juveniles an early start by breeding an average of 18 days earlier than control mothers, which may explain the persistent survival advantages their juveniles experienced.  相似文献

The reference design is a practical and popular choice for microarray studies using two-color platforms. In the reference design, the reference RNA uses half of all array resources, leading investigators to ask: What is the best reference RNA? We propose a novel method for evaluating reference RNAs and present the results of an experiment that was specially designed to evaluate three common choices of reference RNA. We found no compelling evidence in favor of any particular reference. In particular, a commercial reference showed no advantage in our data. Our experimental design also enabled a new way to test the effectiveness of pre-processing methods for two-color arrays. Our results favor using intensity normalization and foregoing background subtraction. Finally, we evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of data quality filters, and we propose a new filter that can be applied to any experimental design and does not rely on replicate hybridizations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The developmental toxicity potential of vorinostat (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid [SAHA], ZOLINZA), a potent inhibitor of histone deacetylase (HDAC), was assessed in Sprague-Dawley rats and Dutch Belted rabbits. HDAC inhibitors have been shown to mediate the regulation of gene expression, induce cell growth, cell differentiation, and apoptosis of tumor cells. Range-finding studies established oral dose levels of 5, 15, or 50 mg/kg/day and 20, 50, or 150 mg/kg/day in rats and rabbits, respectively. METHODS: Animals were dosed on Gestation Days 6-20 or 7-20, respectively, with litter/fetal parameters evaluated on GD 21 and 28, respectively. Separate studies evaluated toxicokinetic parameters at the mid- and high-dose levels. RESULTS: There was no maternal toxicity observed at the highest dose levels; however, hematology and serum biochemistry changes were characterized in the range-finding studies. Vorinostat did not induce morphological malformations in either rat or rabbit fetuses. In rats, drug-related developmental toxicity was observed only in the high-dose group and consisted of markedly decreased fetal weight and increases in fetuses with a limited number of skeletal variations. In rabbits, drug-related developmental toxicity was also observed only in the high-dose group and consisted of slightly decreased fetal weight and increases in fetuses with a short 13th rib and incomplete ossification of metacarpals. Maternal exposures to vorinostat based on AUC and Cmax values were comparable at the high-dose levels of both species. Rabbits tolerated higher dosages probably due to more extensive metabolism. Maternal concentrations of vorinostat were approximately 1,000-fold above the known in vitro HDAC inhibitory concentration. CONCLUSIONS: Review of previous work with valproic acid, another HDAC inhibitor, suggest that the developmental toxicity profiles of these 2 compounds are not the result of HDAC inhibition but involve other mechanisms.  相似文献
