Statistical decision theory is discussed as a general framework for analysing how animals should learn. Attention is focused on optimal foraging behaviour in stochastic environments. We emphasise the distinction between the mathematical procedure that can be used to find optimal solutions and the mechanism an animal might use to implement such solutions. The mechanisms might be specific to a restricted class of problems and produce suboptimal behaviour when faced with problems outside this class. We illustrate this point by an example based on what is known in the literature on animal learning as the partial reinforcement effect. 相似文献

In this progress report, recent improvements to the room temperaturesyntheses of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (APbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) are assessed, focusing on various aspects which influence the commercial viability of the technology. Perovskite nanocrystals can be prepared easily from low‐cost precursors under ambient conditions, yet they have displayed near‐unity photoluminescence quantum yield with narrow, highly tunable emission peaks. In addition to their impressive ambipolar charge carrier mobilities, these properties make lead halide perovskite nanocrystals very attractive for light‐emitting diode (LED) applications. However, there are still many practical hurdles preventing commercialization. Recent developments in room temperature synthesis and purification protocols are reviewed, closely evaluating the suitability of particular techniques for industry. This is followed by an assessment of the wide range of ligands deployed on perovskite nanocrystal surfaces, analyzing their impact on colloidal stability, as well as LED efficiency. Based on these observations, a perspective on important future research directions that can expedite the industrial adoption of perovskite nanocrystals is provided. 相似文献

The product of the Msx1 gene is a potent inhibitor of muscle differentiation. Msx1 is expressed in muscle precursor cells of the limb bud that also express Pax3. It is thought that Msx1 may facilitate distal migration by delaying myogenesis in these cells. Despite the role played by Msx1 in inhibiting muscle differentiation, nothing is known of the mechanisms that support the expression of the Msx1 gene within limb bud muscle precursor cells. In the present study we have used a combination of comparative genomics, mouse transgenic analysis, in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry to identify a highly conserved and tissue-specific regulatory sub-domain within the previously characterised Msx1 gene proximal enhancer element that supports the expression of the Msx1 gene in Pax3-expressing mouse limb pre-muscle masses. Furthermore, using a combination of in situ hybridisation, in vivo ChIP assay and transgenic explant culture analysis we provide evidence that Msx1 expression in limb bud muscle precursor cells is dependent on the canonical Wnt/TCF signalling pathway that is important in muscle shape formation. The results of these studies provide evidence of a mechanistic link between the Wnt/TCF and the Msx1/Pax3/MyoD pathways within limb bud muscle precursor cells. 相似文献

Fungal prions are infectious filamentous polymers of proteins that are soluble in uninfected cells. In its prion form, the HET-s protein of Podospora anserina participates in a fungal self/non-self recognition phenomenon called heterokaryon incompatibility. Like other prion proteins, HET-s has a so-called "prion domain" (its C-terminal region, HET-s-(218-289)) that is responsible for induction and propagation of the prion in vivo and for fibril formation in vitro. Prion fibrils are thought to have amyloid backbones of polymerized prion domains. A relatively detailed model has been proposed for prion domain fibrils of HET-s based on a variety of experimental constraints (Ritter, C., Maddelein, M. L., Siemer, A. B., Luhrs, T., Ernst, M., Meier, B. H., Saupe, S. J., and Riek, R. (2005) Nature 435, 844-848). To test specific predictions of this model, which envisages axial stacking of beta-solenoids with two coils per subunit, we examined fibrils by electron microscopy. Electron diffraction gave a prominent meridional reflection at (0.47 nm)(-1), indicative of cross-beta structure, as predicted. STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) mass-per-unit-length measurements yielded 1.02 +/- 0.16 subunits per 0.94 nm, in agreement with the model prediction (1 subunit per 0.94 nm). This is half the packing density of approximately 1 subunit per 0.47 nm previously obtained for fibrils of the yeast prion proteins, Ure2p and Sup35p, whence it follows that the respective amyloid architectures are basically different. 相似文献

Since the beginning of the 1980s, cryo-electron microscopy of a thin film of vitrified aqueous suspension has made it possible to observe biological particles in their native state, in the absence of the usual artefacts of dehydration and staining. Combined with 3-d reconstruction, it has become an important tool for structural molecular biology. Larger objects such as cells and tissues cannot generally be squeezed in a thin enough film. Cryo-electron microscopy of vitreous sections (CEMOVIS) provides then a solution. It requires vitrification of a sizable piece of biological material and cutting it into ultrathin sections, which are observed in the vitrified state. Each of these operations raises serious difficulties that have now been overcome. In general, the native state seen with CEMOVIS is very different from what has been seen before and it is seen in more detail. CEMOVIS will give its full potential when combined with computerized electron tomography for 3-d reconstruction. 相似文献
