The rate of exchange, or connectivity, among populations effects their ability to recover after disturbance events. However, there is limited information on the extent to which populations are connected or how multiple disturbances affect connectivity, especially in coastal and marine ecosystems. We used network analysis and the outputs of a biophysical model to measure potential functional connectivity and predict the impact of multiple disturbances on seagrasses in the central Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (GBRWHA), Australia. The seagrass networks were densely connected, indicating that seagrasses are resilient to the random loss of meadows. Our analysis identified discrete meadows that are important sources of seagrass propagules and that serve as stepping stones connecting various different parts of the network. Several of these meadows were close to urban areas or ports and likely to be at risk from coastal development. Deep water meadows were highly connected to coastal meadows and may function as a refuge, but only for non‐foundation species. We evaluated changes to the structure and functioning of the seagrass networks when one or more discrete meadows were removed due to multiple disturbance events. The scale of disturbance required to disconnect the seagrass networks into two or more components was on average >245 km, about half the length of the metapopulation. The densely connected seagrass meadows of the central GBRWHA are not limited by the supply of propagules; therefore, management should focus on improving environmental conditions that support natural seagrass recruitment and recovery processes. Our study provides a new framework for assessing the impact of global change on the connectivity and persistence of coastal and marine ecosystems. We mapped the distribution and diversity of mitochondrial D-loop haplotypes among 502 New Zealand house mice (Mus musculus). By widespread sampling from 74 sites, we identified 14 new haplotypes. We used Bayesian phylogenetic reconstructions to estimate the genetic relationships between the New Zealand representatives of Mus musculus domesticus (all six known clades) and M. m. castaneus (clade HG2), and mice from other locales. We defined four distinct geographic regions of New Zealand with differing haplotype diversity indices. Our Results suggest (a) two independent pre-1840 invasions by mice of different origin (domesticus clade E and castaneus clade HG2) at opposite ends of the country; (b) multiple later invasions by domesticus clades E and F accompanying the post-1840 development of New Zealand port facilities in the central regions, plus limited local incursions by domesticus clades A, B, C and D1; (c) a separate invasion of Chatham I. by castaneus clade HG2; (d) previously undescribed New Zealand haplotypes, potentially the products of localised indigenous mutation, and (e) hybridisation between different lineages. 相似文献

This study investigated generalization decrement during an extinction resistance-to-change test for pigeon key pecking using a two-component multiple schedule with equal variable-interval 3-min schedules and different reinforcer amounts (one component presented 2-s access to reinforcement and the other 8s). After establishing baseline responding, subjects were assigned to one of the two extinction conditions: hopper stimuli (hopper and hopper light were activated but no food was available) or Control (inactive hopper and hopper light). Responding in the 8-s component was more resistant to extinction than responding in the 2-s component, the hopper stimuli group was more resistant to extinction compared to the Control group, and an interaction between amount of reinforcement, extinction condition, and session block was present. This finding supports generalization decrement as a factor that influences resistance to extinction. Hopper-time data (the amount of time subjects spent with their heads in the hopper) were compared to resistance-to-change data in an investigation of the role of conditioned reinforcement on resistance to change. 相似文献

Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) is a legume adapted to high temperatures and is sensitive to low temperatures. Temperature is one of the limiting
factors of growth and yield for many crops but its effect on cowpea metabolism is not known. We investigated the effect of
chilling on activity of vacuolar proton pumps (V-ATPase and V-PPase) and their protein content in tonoplast vesicles of cowpea
hypocotyls. Seedlings grown for 7 days at 10 or 4°C were used for experiments. Chilling treatment at 10 or 4°C markedly suppressed
growth of cowpea seedlings. Following chilling at 10 and 4°C, activity of both proton pumps and the relative amount of V-PPase
and subunit A of V-ATPase were significantly increased. Both substrate hydrolysis and H+ transport activities of V-PPase remained at relatively high levels during chilling treatment. For V-ATPase, treatment at
10°C for 6 days increased the ATP hydrolysis activity. However, the H+ transport activity of the enzyme was increased when treated for 4 days but was markedly decreased when treated for 6 days.
Our results provide evidence for different regulation for these vacuolar proton pumps, indicating that V-PPase is the more

Declarations of the end of race ignore the continuing impact of racism upon socio-economic inequality in ‘racial states’. Nevertheless, the idea of post-racialism has gained ground in a post-9/11 era, defined by a growing suspicion of diversity. Clearly racialized, this suspicion is couched in cultural-civilizational terms that attempt to avoid the charge of racism. Hence, attempts to counteract the purported failure of multiculturalism in Europe today pose culturalist solutions to problems deemed to originate from an excess of cultural diversity. This is part of a deepening culturalization of politics in which the post-race argument belongs to a post-political logic that shuns political explanations of unrest and widening disintegration in favour of reductive culturalist ones. The culturalization of politics is elaborated by relating it to the displacement of the political that originated with the nineteenth-century ascendance of race, thus setting ‘post-racialism’ firmly within the history of modern racism. 相似文献

SUMMARY In many animals, larval structures and juvenile rudiments develop independently. One advantage of this independence is that juvenile rudiments can be expended as a nutrient reserve or for energy conservation. When bryozoan cyphonautes larvae were starved, structures required for settlement and metamorphosis shrank. When the larvae were again fed, these structures grew back. Starvation reduced the size of both the internal sac, a rudiment of postlarval juvenile structures, and the pyriform organ, which functions in sensing and crawling on the substratum at settlement. In contrast, starvation affected neither the size of the larval shell nor the lengths of the ciliary bands used in swimming and feeding. Starved larvae that had reduced the pyriform organ and internal sac did not metamorphose in response to stimuli from a laminarian alga. The laminarian alga did stimulate metamorphosis of the same larvae after renewed feeding, when the larvae had regrown these structures. Thus starved larvae expended body parts needed for settlement and metamorphosis when food was scarce while retaining structures for feeding, swimming, and defense. Starved larvae thereby retained the capacity to regrow structures needed for settlement and metamorphosis when they again encountered food. Advantages from expendable juvenile rudiments may enhance selection for their being developmentally distinct from structures for larval swimming and feeding. 相似文献
