The southeast Asian scarab beetle genus Peltonotus Burmeister (Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae, Cyclocephalini) is reviewed. New country records for Peltonotus morio Burmeister (Myanmar and Vietnam), Peltonotus nasutus Arrow (southern China and Cambodia), and Peltonotus favonius Jameson and Wada (Myanmar) are reported, including a new record in the Palearctic/Sino-Japanese biogeographic region. The first female specimen of Peltonotus favonius is described. Biological associations with aroid inflorescences are reviewed, and human consumption of Peltonotus beetles is reported. A key to all species, paralectotype designations for Peltonotus nasutus, diagnoses, and distributions using dynamic mapping tools are included.  相似文献

Aim  To assess temporal changes in gammarid distribution in Brittany and microhabitat-use overlap between the endangered endemic Gammarus duebeni celticus Stock & Pinkster, 1970 , the expanding natives G. pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) and Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878), and the introduced G. tigrinus Sexton, 1939.
Location  Brittany and adjacent regions in western France.
Methods  The spatial and temporal patterns in distribution of gammarids at the scale of Brittany were studied using 351 sites. Longitudinal distributions (from the source to the estuary of the river) and microhabitat-use (substratum type and water velocity) were also considered in selected rivers.
Results  At the regional scale, all species occurred together less often than expected statistically, with significant deviations from expected for G. pulex vs. both G. duebeni celticus and G. tigrinus , and for E. berilloni vs. both G. duebeni celticus and G. tigrinus . However, at the microhabitat scale, E. berilloni occurred significantly more often than expected with the endemic G. duebeni celticus , and this appears to be due to similar substratum and water velocity preferences, although at both the regional and microhabitat scales E. berilloni prefers wider streams than G. duebeni celticus . This study reveals a decline in the endangered G. duebeni celticus since 1970.
Main conclusions  The longitudinal and local distributions of G. duebeni celticus , and the higher-than-expected co-occurrence of the species with G. pulex , suggest that the decline of the endemic species may be due to changes in the environment and/or interference from native G. pulex , which is expanding its range in Brittany. The results are discussed as regards to the consequences for regional biodiversity.  相似文献

Synopsis The life cycle of leiurus-type Gasterosteus aculeatus occurring in a Mediterranean coastal wetland is described. Fish have a low number of lateral plates, short spines and marked sexual dimorphism in size. The life cycle is strictly annual, adults dying shortly after breeding. Adult fish migrate into seasonally-flooded freshwater marshes to breed, and the young migrate back to brackish water to pass the summer and autumn. Breeding occurs in March at water temperatures of about 10°C, the season lasting about 50 days. Growth of fish occurs throughout the year, but differs from year to year, resulting in variable adult size. Maximum gonadal investment of male fish is in autumn, whereas that of females is in spring. Gonadal investment of female fish, as measured by gonado-somatic index and fecundity, is higher than in other studied leiurus populations, but the number of clutches produced in a season is probably low. These differences in life history from other studied populations of sticklebacks are seen as adaptations to a mediterranean-type climate (high summer temperatures, seasonality of water bodies) and to heavy predation by fish-eating birds.  相似文献

A simple procedure is described for the determination of the photosensitizing potency of drugs, using three leukemic cell lines, two of lymphocytic origin, L1210 and P388 and one of erythroid type, Friend-745. The procedure allows one to investigate several aspects of the photosensitization properties of tested compounds such as cellular localization and direct (trypan blue exclusion) or delayed (clonogenicity) photomediated toxicities.The method was assessed using crude hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) as well as dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE) or commercially available Photofrin II. Summary To delimit the 14q32.1 recurrent breakpoint of ataxia telangiectasia clones, we performed an in situ hybridization study with various probes located on the 14q32 band. We thus mapped this breakpoint between the D14S1 and Pi loci. Furthermore, an interstitial duplication including D14S1 and a part of the IgH locus was demonstrated on a t(14;14) clone.  相似文献

We describe here a liquid culture system for the regeneration of shoots at high frequencies from mature cotyledon tissues of three genotypes of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) one of which had previously been found to be recalcitrant to regeneration when cotyledons were cultured on solid medium. Cotyledons were excised from 2-day-old seedlings and incubated in liquid Murashige and Skoog's modified medium supplemented with 5.4 M naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 4.4 M benzylaminopurine (BAP). After two weeks in culture, the whole upper surface of regenerating explants was covered with green shootlets. The percentages of regenerating explants of three genotypes varied between 60 and 70%, and the number of shoots per regenerating explant was highly increased. The shootlets were transferred to solid Murashige and Skoog's medium allowing shoot development, then to rooting medium. Rooted plantlets were successfully acclimatized and gave fertile plants. Using ethnographical data from a rural site of Oriya culture, the purpose of this article is to show that the Indian obsession regarding the harmful consequences of semen loss does not constitute a specific Indian culture-bound preoccupation, but represents a survival example of a much widespread system of beliefs that can be traced for instance in Western culture to the Hippocratic notion of back consumption and the classical concept of gonorrhoea. At the core of this system of beliefs are found ancient conceptions of the nature and functions of semen in human life. These conceptions and their cultural influences incidentally inform us about one of the origins of the reprobation of onanism, as well as one possible way, among many others, for traditional thinking to explain the clinical enigma of depressive syndrome.  相似文献

In order to assess the relative effectiveness of finger warming and temporal blood volume pulse reduction biofeedback in the treatment of migraine, 22 female migraine patients were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: temporal artery constriction feedback, finger temperature feedback, or waiting list. Biofeedback training consisted of 12 sessions over a 6-week period. All patients completed 5 weeks of daily self-monitoring of headache activity (frequency, duration, and intensity) and medication before and after treatment. Treatment credibility was assessed at the end of Sessions 1, 6, and 12. Results showed that temporal constriction and finger temperature biofeedback were equally effective in controlling migraine headaches and produced greater benefits than the waiting list condition. Power analyses indicated that very large sample sizes would have been required to detect any significant differences between the two treatment groups. No significant relationships were found between levels of therapeutic gains and levels of thermal or blood volume pulse self-regulation skills. Likewise, treatment outcome was not found to be related to treatment credibility. Further analyses revealed that changes in headache activity and medication were associated with changes in vasomotor variability. Because blood volume pulse variability was not significantly affected by biofeedback training, questions about its role in the therapeutic mechanism are raised.This research was supported in part by grants from the Quebec Ministry of Education and the Quebec Ministery of Social Affairs to the first author, and an award from the Medical Research Council of Canada to the second author. Summary The possibility of cloning filamentous fungal genes by expression in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been studied. A genome bank of Aspergillus niger was made in E. coli using a yeast cosmid shuttle vector and over 10,000 different cosmid clones were individually isolated. Yeast transformants carrying Aspergillus DNA were screened for the expression of the genes for fungal secreted glycoproteins, -galactosidase, -glucosidase, and amyloglucosidase, and for the expression of fungal genes complementing yeast ura3 and leu2 mutations.Of the five Aspergillus genes studied, only one, -glucosidase, was found to be expressed in yeast, and this at a low level. This suggests that there are essential differences between the genes of yeast and filamentous fungi.  相似文献

Stimulation of de novo synthesis of δ-aminolevulinate dehydralasc of radishes grown under far-red light .
Density labelling studies of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALAD) in cotyledons of radish ( Raphanus sativus L. cv. Longue Rave Saumonée) seedlings demonstrate that far-red light stimulates de novo synthesis of ALAD and that the turn-over of this enzyme is very poor. Cycloheximide reduces considerably both the increase of ALAD activity and the incorporation of deuterium in ALAD, which indicates that ALAD synthesis depends upon cytoplasmic ribosomes.  相似文献
