Aroid scarabs in the genus Peltonotus Burmeister (Coleoptera,Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae): key to species and new distributional data

The southeast Asian scarab beetle genus Peltonotus Burmeister (Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae, Cyclocephalini) is reviewed. New country records for Peltonotus morio Burmeister (Myanmar and Vietnam), Peltonotus nasutus Arrow (southern China and Cambodia), and Peltonotus favonius Jameson and Wada (Myanmar) are reported, including a new record in the Palearctic/Sino-Japanese biogeographic region. The first female specimen of Peltonotus favonius is described. Biological associations with aroid inflorescences are reviewed, and human consumption of Peltonotus beetles is reported. A key to all species, paralectotype designations for Peltonotus nasutus, diagnoses, and distributions using dynamic mapping tools are included.     

Multiple Bacteriocin Production by Leuconostoc mesenteroidesTA33a and Other Leuconostoc/Weissella Strains

Leuconostoc (Lc.) mesenteroides TA33a produced three bacteriocins with different inhibitory activity spectra. Bacteriocins were purified by adsorption/desorption from producer cells and reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Leucocin C-TA33a, a novel bacteriocin with a predicted molecular mass of 4598 Da, inhibited Listeria and other lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Leucocin B-TA33a has a predicted molecular mass of 3466 Da, with activity against Leuconostoc/Weissella (W.) strains, and appears similar to mesenterocin 52B and dextranicin 24, while leucocin A-TA33a, which also inhibited Listeria and other LAB strains, is identical to leucocin A-UAL 187. A survey of other known bacteriocin-producing Leuconostoc/Weissella strains for the presence of the three different bacteriocins revealed that production of leucocin A-, B- and C-type bacteriocins was widespread. Lc. carnosum LA54a, W. paramesenteroides LA7a, and Lc. gelidum UAL 187-22 produced all three bacteriocins, whereas W. paramesenteroides OX and Lc. carnosum TA11a produced only leucocin A- and B-type bacteriocins. Study of Poaceae phenology in a Mediterranean climate. Which species contribute most to airborne pollen counts?

The present study sought to determine which of the common Poaceae species in the study area contribute most to the Poaceae pollen season curve, and to determine the phenological behaviour of the species studied. The different floral phenophases in thirty-three Poaceae species common in and around the city of Córdoba (SW Iberian Peninsula) were checked periodically over the period 2004–2006. Results showed that longer phenological ranges were recorded in the coolest and wettest year, and shorter ranges in the warmest and driest year. Moreover, ranges varied as a function of altitude: populations in lower-lying areas flowered earlier than those at higher altitudes. The results, taken in conjunction with the findings of preliminary research into potential pollen production, showed that probably only four of the Poaceae species studied—Dactylis glomerata, Lolium rigidum, Trisetaria panicea and Vulpia geniculata—were major contributors to the Poaceae airborne pollen curve.     

Distribution and microhabitats of native and non-native gammarids (Amphipoda, Crustacea) in Brittany, with particular reference to the endangered endemic sub-species Gammarus duebeni celticus

Aim  To assess temporal changes in gammarid distribution in Brittany and microhabitat-use overlap between the endangered endemic Gammarus duebeni celticus Stock & Pinkster, 1970 , the expanding natives G. pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) and Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878), and the introduced G. tigrinus Sexton, 1939.
Location  Brittany and adjacent regions in western France.
Methods  The spatial and temporal patterns in distribution of gammarids at the scale of Brittany were studied using 351 sites. Longitudinal distributions (from the source to the estuary of the river) and microhabitat-use (substratum type and water velocity) were also considered in selected rivers.
Results  At the regional scale, all species occurred together less often than expected statistically, with significant deviations from expected for G. pulex vs. both G. duebeni celticus and G. tigrinus , and for E. berilloni vs. both G. duebeni celticus and G. tigrinus . However, at the microhabitat scale, E. berilloni occurred significantly more often than expected with the endemic G. duebeni celticus , and this appears to be due to similar substratum and water velocity preferences, although at both the regional and microhabitat scales E. berilloni prefers wider streams than G. duebeni celticus . This study reveals a decline in the endangered G. duebeni celticus since 1970.
Main conclusions  The longitudinal and local distributions of G. duebeni celticus , and the higher-than-expected co-occurrence of the species with G. pulex , suggest that the decline of the endemic species may be due to changes in the environment and/or interference from native G. pulex , which is expanding its range in Brittany. The results are discussed as regards to the consequences for regional biodiversity.     

Coordination mode and reactivity of copper(II) complexes with kasugamycin.

Protonation and Cu(II) coordination of kasugamycin were studied by potentiometry, UV-vis, CD, EPR, 13C NMR, and 1H NMR. Mononuclear complexes with stoichiometries ranging from CuHL to CuH(-1)L were found. The aminoamidine moiety provides the coordination site in the CuHL species. The additional axial coordination of the amino nitrogen of the aminosugar ring is present in CuL. Finally, the CuH(-1)L complex is formed as a result of a deprotonation and coordination of the hydroxyl group of the inositol ring. The non-planar arrangement of the chelate rings results in the relative stabilization of a Cu(I) species. As a consequence, Cu(I) and superoxide radicals are involved in the redox mechanism of H(2)O(2) activation by the Cu(II) complex of kasugamycin.     

The French National Program for the Prevention and Control of AIDS

The French policy concerning the fight against the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a complete and well-balanced one, using information not only for the general awareness of the general population, but also with the help of specific actions aimed at high risk groups. Screening is mandatory for blood, organ and cell donors, but it must absolutely respect individual rights and the rules of ethics. Therefore it must be voluntary and totally respect privacy and professional confidence. France does not undertake screening at the border, but does inform people traveling to and from the country. The monitoring and medical care will be given daily for ambulatory patients, and in specific hospital services according to the symptoms of the others. To save money and to be more efficient, tests will be grouped in specific laboratories. Research is, with prevention, the only hope of stopping the spread of AIDS. More than 50 laboratories are at this moment working, and important funds and materials have been allocated. International cooperation is needed, along with the coordination of the World Health Organization, and the action undertaken by the European Community, to establish the most efficient methods of preventing the spread of this new viral infection that now concerns the whole world.     

Murine monoclonal antibody against aldosterone: production, characterization and use for enzymoimmunoassay

Hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies to aldosterone were obtained by fusion of myeloma cells and spleen cells from Balb/c mice immunized with aldosterone-3-carboxylmethyloxime-bovine serum albumin. A monoclonal antibody was purified from ascites fluid and characterized. An affinity constant of 1.61 x 10(9) M-1 has been measured and no cross-reactivity with tetrahydroaldosterone (THA), cortisol, cortisone, corticosterone, deoxycorticosterone (DOC), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA), progesterone and estrone, could be detected. A peroxidase conjugated-antibody (1.5 mole of enzyme per mole of antibody) was obtained and used for microwell enzyme immunoassay and Immun-Blot assay. The high affinity and specificity of this antibody should make the direct determination of aldosterone in biological fluids possible at concentrations as low as 5 x 10(-10) M.
