The orientation of combs in traditional beehives is extremely important for obtaining a marketable honey product. However, the factors that could determine comb orientation in traditional hives and the possibilities of inducing honey bees, Apis mellifera (L.), to construct more desirable combs have not been investigated. The goal of this experiment was to determine whether guide marks in traditional hives can induce bees to build combs of a desired orientation. Thirty-two traditional hives of uniform dimensions were used in the experiment. In 24 hives, ridges were formed on the inner surfaces of the hives with fermented mud to obtain different orientations, circular, horizontal, and spiral, with eight replicates of each treatment. In the remaining eight control hives, the inner surface was left smooth. Thirty-two well-established honey bee colonies from other traditional hives were transferred to the prepared hives. The colonies were randomly assigned to the four treatment groups. The manner of comb construction in the donor and experimental hives was recorded. The results showed that 22 (91.66%) of the 24 colonies in the treated groups built combs along the ridges provided, whereas only 2 (8.33%) did not. Comb orientation was strongly associated with the type of guide marks provided. Moreover, of the 18 colonies that randomly fell to patterns different from those of their previous nests, 17 (94.4%) followed the guide marks provided, irrespective of the comb orientation type in their previous nest. Thus, comb orientation appears to be governed by the inner surface pattern of the nest cavity. The results suggest that even in fixed-comb hives, honey bees can be guided to build combs with orientations suitable to honey harvesting, without affecting the colonies. 相似文献

Monitoring on the Lowveld reaches of the Olifants River, Limpopo River System, and its Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries was initiated in 2009. Analysis of the 2009–2015 data from four Olifants River sites showed deterioration in the river’s ecological condition between where it enters the Lowveld and where it enters the Kruger National Park, with a slight recovery within the Kruger National Park. Physico-chemical, aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish data collected in 2009–2015 at six sites on the Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries of the Olifants River corroborated the ecological condition of these tributaries. The Selati was the most polluted and was in a critically modified condition, whereas the Klaserie and Steelpoort were in fair condition and the Blyde was in good condition. The Selati appeared to have a significant negative impact on the water quality, macroinvertebrates and fish of the Olifants River within the Kruger National Park. 相似文献

Homogenization of geographical variants at the nontranscribed spacer of rDNA in Drosophila mercatorum 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
rDNA nontranscribed spacer (NTS) lengths of Drosophila mercatorum have been
measured in individuals from several geographic regions. Individuals from
the different geographic subpopulations share some length fragments but are
in general distinct. The length differences, both within and between
individuals, arise from different copy numbers of a 250-bp repeating unit
that is localized to one part of the NTS. In addition to the length
differences caused by the 250-bp repeat, there is a Y chromosome
(male)-specific length variant elsewhere in the NTS that is approximately
70 bp shorter than the NTS fragment from the X chromosome. Sexual
dimorphism seems to be present in all Drosophila. Also, D. mercatorum has
fewer NTS length variants per individual than does D. melanogaster while
possessing comparable levels of restriction- site polymorphism. The
mechanisms that may cause this pattern of variation are selection, gene
conversion, and unequal recombination.

The computational method of constrained constructive optimization was used to generate complex arterial model trees by optimization with respect to a target function. Changing the target function also changes the tree structure obtained. For a parameterized family of target functions a series of trees was created, showing visually striking differences in structure that can also be quantified by appropriately chosen numerical indexes. Blood transport path length, pressure profile, and an index for relative segment orientation show clear dependencies on the optimization target, and the nature of changes can be explained on theoretical grounds. The probiotic effects of seven newly isolated gut bacteria, from the indegenous honey bees of Saudi Arabia were investigated. In vivo bioassays were used to investigate the effects of each gut bacterium namely, Fructobacillus fructosus (T1), Proteus mirabilis (T2), Bacillus licheniformis (T3), Lactobacillus kunkeei (T4), Bacillus subtilis (T5), Enterobacter kobei (T6), and Morganella morganii (T7) on mortality percentage of honey bee larvae infected with P. larvae spores along with negative control (normal diet) and positive control (normal diet spiked with P. larvae spores). Addition of gut bacteria to the normal diet significantly reduced the mortality percentage of the treated groups. Mortality percentage in all treated groups ranged from 56.67% up to 86.67%. T6 treated group exhibited the highest mortality (86.67%), whereas T4 group showed the lowest mortality (56.67%). Among the seven gut bacterial treatments, T4 and T3 decreased the mortality 56.67% and 66.67%, respectively, whereas, for T2, T6, and T7 the mortality percentage was equal to that of the positive control (86.67%). Mortality percentages in infected larval groups treated with T1, and T5 were 78.33% and 73.33% respectively. Most of the mortality occurred in the treated larvae during days 2 and 3. Treatments T3 and T4 treatments showed positive effects and reduced mortality. 相似文献

In subjects with impaired insulin action, alterations of the serum sodium and potassium concentrations have been reported. The resulting cationic imbalance, along with the osmotic effect of the elevated sugar levels, could influence the course of diabetes mellitus management. Therefore, this study was conducted to compare the fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels with those of the serum electrolytes. Blood samples were collected for assessment of HbA1c, fasting blood glucose (FBS), and electrolytes using different automated methods. A significant association between the serum sodium and FBS levels among types 1 and 2 insulin-treated patients, and type 2 oral agent patients was observed. A total of 138 diabetic subjects were randomly selected from any gender aged between 25 and 65?years at the University Diabetes Center, King Saud University, Riyadh KSA. The subjects were classified into types 1 or 2 DM using ADA criteria. Blood samples were collected for assessment of HbA1c, FBS, and electrolytes using different automated methods. It showed a significant association between serum sodium, FBS among type 1, type 2 insulin treated, and type 2 oral agent groups. However, the association of sodium and HbA1c was insignificant when analyzed individually. A statistically significant association (P?0.001) was observed between the levels of serum sodium and the fasting blood glucose levels. This study demonstrated significant reduction in serum sodium level among types 1 or 2 diabetic patients especially among insulin-treated patients. No significant association was demonstrated by serum potassium with FBS and degree of diabetes control. 相似文献

Calcareous soils contain a high concentration of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which influences soil properties related to plant growth. Humic acid (HA) and ammonium molybdate (AM) were added as treatments for calcareous soils at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 g/l respectively. The pots were divided into three groups. The first set of groups were irrigated with AM, while the second set of groups were irrigated with HA. As a control, the third group was irrigated using only tap water. Many soil properties and plant characteristics were measured during the experiment. The results showed that most of the studied treatments aided to increase organic carbon of calcareous soil and improved sunflower height, leaf area and shoot and root biomass. All investigated treatments significantly enhanced carbohydrates content in the sunflower shoots, except the treatment with 0.1 g/l AM, while only the with AM (under all studied concentrations) significantly enhanced carbohydrates content in roots higher than untreated. Proteins content in the shoots and roots of sunflower significantly increased when treated only with 1 g/l HA higher than control. The amino acid content of sunflower roots enhanced when treated with 0.1 and 1 m/l HA and 0.5 g/l AM Evidently, acidifying materials enhanced the calcareous soil and increased productivity. 相似文献

Background
The transglutaminase activated factor XIII (FXIIIa) acts to strengthen pathological fibrin clots and to slow their dissolution, in part by crosslinking active α2-antiplasmin (α2AP) to fibrin. We previously reported that a yeast-derived recombinant fusion protein comprising α2AP residues 13-42 linked to human serum albumin (HSA) weakened in vitro clots but failed to become specifically incorporated into in vivo clots. In this study, our aims were to improve both the stability and clot localization of the HSA fusion protein by replacing α2AP residues 13-42 with shorter sequences recognized more effectively by FXIIIa.Results
Expression plasmids were prepared encoding recombinant HSA with the following N-terminal 23 residue extensions: H6NQEQVSPLTLLAG4Y (designated XL1); H6DQMMLPWAVTLG4Y (XL2); H6WQHKIDLPYNGAG4Y (XL3); and their 17 residue non-His-tagged equivalents (XL4, XL5, and XL6). The HSA moiety of XL4- to XL6-HSA proteins was C-terminally His-tagged. All chimerae were efficiently secreted from transformed Pichia pastoris yeast except XL3-HSA, and following nickel chelate affinity purification were found to be intact by amino acid sequencing, as was an N-terminally His-tagged version of α2AP(13-42)-HSA. Of the proteins tested, XL5-HSA was cross-linked to biotin pentylamine (BPA) most rapidly by FXIIIa, and was the most effective competitor of α2AP crosslinking not only to BPA but also to plasma fibrin clots. In the mouse ferric chloride vena cava thrombosis model, radiolabeled XL5-HSA was retained in the clot to a greater extent than recombinant HSA. In the rabbit jugular vein stasis thrombosis model, XL5-HSA was also retained in the clot, in a urea-insensitive manner indicative of crosslinking to fibrin, to a greater extent than recombinant HSA.Conclusions
Fusion protein XL5-HSA (DQMMLPWAVTLG4Y-HSAH6) was found to be more active as a substrate for FXIIIa-mediated transamidation than seven other candidate fusion proteins in vitro. The improved stability and reactivity of this chimeric protein was further evidenced by its incorporation into in vivo clots formed in thrombosis models in both mice and rabbits. 相似文献30.
The structural stability of halocarbonyl azides CXO-NNN (X=F, Cl and Br) was investigated by DFT and MP2 calculations using the 6-311++G** basis set. From the calculations, the molecules were found to have an s-cis<--> s-trans conformational equilibrium with cis being the lower -energy form. Full energy optimizations were carried out for the transition states and the minima at the B3LYP/6 -311++G** and MP2/6 -311++G** levels, from which the rotational barriers were calculated to be of the order 8-10 kcal x mol(-1).
