Viruses are frequent causes of upper respiratory tract infections in children. We investigated the viral aetiology of community-acquired upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) in young children treated as outpatients in community settings. During November 2008, nasal swab specimens were taken from children with recent onset of upper respiratory tract infections. The patients attended day care or primary schools; the specimens were randomly obtained by pediatricians from schools and childcare institutions and sent for identification by PCR method. A total of 300 specimens were collected. From all samples, 40.67% were positive for at least 1 virus, viz. adenovirus 11.76%, rhinovirus 9.8%, respiratory syncytial virus 6.08%, influenza virus 5.56%, parainfluenza virus 4.9%, enterovirus 2.94% and a combination of 2 viruses 2%. Clinical manifestations of the respiratory infections were as follows: 70.7% of the patients had coryza, 69.3% cough, 26% sneezing, 19.7% sore throat, 2.7% headache, 7.7% fever, 2.3% conjunctivitis, 1.3% abdominal pain and 1% hoarseness. The results of this study demonstrate that adenoviruses and rhinoviruses are the two most common viral agents isolated from pediatric outpatients with acute URIs in autumn in Arak City. Coryza and cough were the most common symptoms in children. Sore throat and hoarseness were more prevalent in infections caused by influenza virus, conjunctivitis in parainfluenza, and coryza in rhinovirus infections.  相似文献

The last century has witnessed a substantial improvement in yield potential, quality and disease resistance in crops. This was indeed the outcome of conventional breeding, which was achieved with little or no knowledge of underlying physiological and biochemical phenomena related to a trait. Also the resources utilized on programs involving conventional breeding were not of great magnitude. Plant breeders have also been successful during the last century in producing a few salt-tolerant cultivars/lines of some potential crops through conventional breeding, but this again has utilized modest resources. However, this approach seems now inefficient due to a number of reasons, and alternatively, genetic engineering for improving crop salt tolerance is being actively followed these days by the plant scientists, world-over. A large number of transgenic lines with enhanced salt tolerance of different crops can be deciphered from the literature but up to now only a very few field-tested cultivars/lines are known despite the fact that considerable resources have been expended on the sophisticated protocols employed for generating such transgenics. This review analytically compares the achievements made so far in terms of producing salt-tolerant lines/cultivars through conventional breeding or genetic engineering.  相似文献

Vitamin D appears to have anti-tumor activities in the large bowel. Our aim was to investigate whether -4817 G>A (rs2238136) polymorphism located at 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the human vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene was associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. We conducted a case-control study and VDR genotypes, determined by Bpu10I restriction endonuclease digestion of PCR-amplified DNA, were performed on 327 cases with CRC and 327 controls. The distribution of VDR -4817 G>A genotypes and alleles differed significantly between cases with CRC and controls even after adjustment for confounding factors such as age, BMI, sex, and smoking status. Individuals carrying the "AA" genotype had a 2.09-fold increased risk compared with those with "GG" genotype (P?=?0.016, OR?=?2.09, 95% CI?=?1.15-3.78) and a 1.87-fold increased risk compared with those with "GG and GA" genotypes (P?=?0.033, OR?=?1.87, 95% CI?=?1.05-3.33) for CRC. Furthermore, the VDR "A" allele was significantly overrepresented in cases with CRC than controls (P?=?0.044; OR?=?1.28, 95% CI?=?1.01-1.63). Interestingly, the analysis of the SNP revealed that all these associations were stronger for women subjects than for all subjects combined. These data indicated for the first time a direct association between "AA" genotype of VDR gene -4817 G>A polymorphism and CRC, with a stronger association for female subjects. However, our findings remain to be confirmed in other populations.  相似文献

The expression of many staphylococcal virulence factors are regulated by the agr locus via a two-component signal transduction system (TCSTS), which is activated in response to a secreted autoinducer peptide (AIP). By exploiting the unique chemical architecture of the naturally occurring AIP-1, several potent inhibitors of staphylococcal TCSTS were designed and synthesized using either a linear or branched solid-phase approach. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of hypothyroidism induced during the pre- and postnatal periods of life on ovarian function and structure in offspring (pups) 120 days of age. Three groups were used. In the prenatal group, treatment was given from conception to parturition. In the postnatal group, treatment was given from parturition to 25 days postpartum. Hypothyroidism was induced by administration of 0.1% 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in the drinking water of mothers. Body weights of the offspring were measured weekly. In each group, ten offspring were sacrificed at 120 days of age. Postnatal PTU treated pups showed delay in eye opening, teething, fur development, and weaning (35-37 days) compared to control animals (28-30 days). Body weight of offspring in the postnatal PTU treatment group was significantly decreased (P < 0.001), while the prenatal PTU treatment group showed a significant increase (P < 0.0001) compared to control animals. There was a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in paired ovarian weight of offspring in the postnatal PTU treatment group compared to control animals. Diameter of the ovaries was not affected by any treatment. Regarding the morphometery, only offspring in the prenatal PTU treatment group showed a significant (P < 0.001) increase in the diameter of graafian follicles. No significant difference was observed in morphometery of the granulosa layer, primary, and developing follicles of control and all treated groups. Number of primary, developing, and graafian follicles of all the treated groups was similar to that of the control group. The corpora lutea of the postnatal PTU treated group contained a population of large numbers of luteal cells compared to the control group. The prenatal PTU treated group did not exhibit a profound effect on ovarian morphology, histology, and morphometery. In this study, we explored the effect of salinity on cadmium (Cd) tolerance and phytoremediation potential of Acacia nilotica. Two-month-old uniform plants of A. nilotica were grown in pots contaminated with various levels of Cd (0, 5, 10, and 15 mg kg?1), NaCl (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% (hereafter referred as salinity), and all possible combinations of Cd + salinity for a period of six months. Results showed that shoot and root growth, biomass, tissue water content and chlorophyll (chl a, chl b, and total chl a+b) contents decreased more in response to salinity and combination of Cd + salinity compared to Cd alone. Shoot and root K concentrations significantly decreased with increasing soil Cd levels, whereas Na and Cl concentrations were not affected significantly. Shoot and root Cd concentrations, bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) increased with increasing soil Cd and Cd + salinity levels. At low level of salinity (0.5%), shoot and root Cd uptake enhanced, while it decreased at high level of salinity (1.0%). Due to Cd tolerance, high shoot biomass and shoot Cd uptake, this tree species has some potential for phytoremediation of Cd from the metal contaminated saline and nonsaline soils.  相似文献
