To theoretically investigate the single and compound effects of relative fecundity and relative stature of plants on size-dependent sex allocation (SDS) in wind-pollinated cosexual species, we developed a game model and analysed ESS sex allocation of large and small plants having totally or partially different reproductive resources and different pollen and seed dispersal areas in a population. We found that e.g. when both sized plants have large pollen dispersal areas relative to their seed dispersal areas, which plants are male-biased is largely determined by relative fecundity (t) and relative size of seed dispersal area (k) of the large plants to the small plants: If t >k, large plants tend to be more male-biased even if relative size of pollen dispersal area of large to small plants (l) is smaller than k. The cell envelope and cytoplasmic architecture of the Mycobacterium leprae Thai-53 strain were examined using the freeze-substitution technique of electron microscopy and compared with those of the M. tuberculosis H37Rv strain. Both strains had similarly multilayered envelope architectures composed of an electron-translucent layer, a peptidoglycan layer and the plasma membrane, from outside to inside. A comparison of the structures of these two mycobacteria revealed that the M. leprae cell was smaller in size and had a thinner peptidoglycan layer than the M. tuberculosis cell. The cell widths measured on electron micrographs were 0.44 microm for M. tuberculosis and 0.38 microm for M. leprae. The peptidoglycan layer of M. leprae was 4-5 nm, while the corresponding layer of M. tuberculosis was 10-15 nm. 相似文献

This is the first report on regulation of the isoamylase1 gene to modify the structure of amylopectin and properties of starch by using antisense technology in plants. The reduction of isoamylase1 protein by about 94% in rice endosperm changed amylopectin into a water-insoluble modified amylopectin and a water-soluble polyglucan (WSP). As compared with wild-type amylopectin, the modified amylopectin had more short chains with a degree of polymerization of 5-12, while their molecular sizes were similar. The WSP, which structurally resembled the phytoglycogen in isoamylase-deficient sugary-1 mutants, accounted for about 16% of the total alpha-polyglucans in antisense endosperm, and it was distributed throughout the whole endosperm unlike in sugary-1 mutant. The reduction of isoamylase activity markedly lowered the gelatinization temperature from 54 to 43 degrees C and the viscosity, and modified X-ray diffraction pattern and the granule morphology of the starch. The activity of pullulanase, the other type of starch debranching enzyme, in the antisense endosperm was similar to that in wild-type, whereas it is deficient in sugary-1 mutants. These results indicate that the isoamylase1 is essential for amylopectin biosynthesis in rice endosperm, and that alteration of the isoamylase activity is an effective means to modify the physicochemical properties and granular structure of starch. 相似文献

Two factors that exist in conditioned medium (CM) of Dictyostelium discoideum induce amoebae to differentiate into prespore cells when they are incubated at a very low cell density in submerged monolayer culture. Previously, we purified one of them, a glycoprotein factor with an apparent molecular mass of 106 kDa, and we named it psi factor (psi, prespore-inducing factor). Based on the partial amino acid sequence of the purified psi factor, we have isolated the corresponding cDNA clone, which is expressed maximally at the loose mound stage. The cDNA encodes a novel protein and the predicted molecular mass of the mature secreted protein is 60 kDa. Knockout mutant strains of the psi factor gene, psiA(-), were created by targeted integration. Although these mutant strains appear to develop normally, CM from these mutants showed reduced prespore-cell-inducing activity. Rescuing the mutant strains by expression of psi factor under control of a constitutive promoter causes overproduction of psi factor protein and CM from such cells showed a 20-fold higher level of prespore-cell-inducing activity than that from wild-type cells. Further, CM from parental cells induced prespore cell division, while that from psiA null strains showed no cell division inducing activity. In the development of the somite, signals from neighboring tissues have been suggested to play critical roles. We have found that when interaction between the ectoderm and the somite is blocked by inserting a piece of polyethylene terephatalate film between them in 2-day-chicken embryo, one of the derivatives of somite, the distal rib, did not form. We examined somite development after the operation, to know the correlation between somite development and distal rib formation. In the operated embryo, the dermomyotome was medio-laterally shorter than in the normal embryo, and Pax3 and Sim1 expressions that are seen in the lateral part of normal dermomyotomes were not found, suggesting that the lateral part of the dermomyotome was missing. Although the sclerotome appeared to be normal in its histology and Pax1 expression pattern in the operated embryo, we could not detect the expression of either Scleraxis nor γ-FBP that are expressed in the cells around the boundaries between the adjacent dermomyotomes in normal embryos. Thus, under the influence of surface ectoderm, the lateral part of dermomyotome and/or the mesenchyme around rostral and caudal edges of dermomyotomes are suggested to play an important role in the distal rib development. 相似文献
