Abstract. We investigated the effect of topography‐related environmental factors (i.e., ground‐surface stability and soil moisture) on seedling establishment of 8 deciduous tree species. A field experiment was carried out using canopy species, which were classified into 3 groups based on the spatial distribution of adult trees (ridge, slope and valley). Demographic parameters were compared among species during the early stage of seedling establishment among 3 topographic positions in combination with gap and canopy conditions. The percentage of emerging seedlings tended to be lower on the ridge irrespective of the adult topographical distribution patterns. There was no clear trend in seedling emergence among the species groups classified by their spatial distribution. Seedling survival during 2 growing seasons was significantly different among species, topographic positions and light conditions. On the ridge, seedlings of the species dominating ridge tops had greater survival than those of other species, probably due to differences in demand for soil moisture. On the slope, frequent physical damage caused by surface material movement was observed and some species showed greater adaptability to the disturbed slope habitat. Survival of all seedlings was highest in the valley plots. Light conditions were the critical factor for seedling survival in some species. The results of this study suggest that topography creates diverse habitats for the establishment of tree seedlings. We have analyzed the ranging patterns of the Mimikire group (M group) of chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. During 16 years, the chimpanzees moved over a total area of 25.2 or 27.4 km2, as estimated by the grid-cell or minimum convex polygon (MCP) methods, respectively. Annually, the M group used an average of 18.4 km2, or approximately 70 %, of the total home-range area. The chimpanzees had used 80 % of their total home range after 5 years and 95 % after 11 years. M group chimpanzees were observed more than half of the time in areas that composed only 15 % of their total home range. Thus, they typically moved over limited areas, visiting other parts of their range only occasionally. On average, the chimpanzees used 7.6 km2 (in MCP) per month. Mean monthly range size was smallest at the end of the rainy season and largest at the end of the dry season, but there was much variability from year to year. The chimpanzees used many of the same areas every year when Saba comorensis fruits were abundant between August and January. In contrast, the chimpanzees used several different areas of their range in June. Here range overlap between years was relatively small. Over the 16 years of the study we found that the M group reduced their use of the northern part of their range and increased their frequency of visits to the eastern mountainous side of their home range. Changes in home-range size correlated positively with the number of adult females but not with the number of adult males. This finding does not support a prediction of the male-defended territory model proposed for some East African chimpanzee unit-groups. 相似文献

The molecular role of the RecF protein in loading RecA protein onto single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-binding protein-coated ssDNA has been obscured by the facility with which the RecO and RecR proteins alone perform this function. We now show that RecFOR and RecOR define distinct RecA loading functions that operate optimally in different contexts. RecFOR, but not RecOR, is most effective when RecF(R) is bound near an ssDNA/double-stranded (dsDNA) junction. However, RecF(R) has no enhanced binding affinity for such a junction. RecO and RecR proteins are both required under all conditions in which the RecFOR pathway operates. The RecOR pathway is uniquely distinguished by a required interaction between RecO protein and the ssDNA binding protein C terminus. The RecOR pathway is more efficient for RecA loading onto ssDNA when no proximal dsDNA is available. A merger of new and published results leads to a new model for RecFOR function. 相似文献

Selenocysteine (Sec) is co-translationally incorporated into selenoproteins at a reprogrammed UGA codon. In mammals, this requires a dedicated machinery comprising a stem-loop structure in the 3′ UTR RNA (the SECIS element) and the specific SECIS Binding Protein 2. In this report, disorder-prediction methods and several biophysical techniques showed that ca. 70% of the SBP2 sequence is disordered, whereas the RNA binding domain appears to be folded and functional. These results are consistent with a recent report on the role of the Hsp90 chaperone for the folding of SBP2 and other functionally unrelated proteins bearing an RNA binding domain homologous to SBP2. 相似文献

From examination of the central axonal projections of sensory bristles on the notum of several species of Drosophilidae, we demonstrate different features that may indicate different functions for macro- and microchaetes. The large macrochaetes have conserved arborizations that correlate with their conserved position. Nevertheless, we find evidence for only two discrete projection patterns for bristles in the dorsocentral (DC) row, even when there may be four or five bristles present. We show that the small microchaetes of Drosophila melanogaster display regional specificity and subsets of contiguous bristles project to a common region in the thoracic ganglion. Interestingly, the axons of each of these subsets also form a specific fasciculation group on the scutum before joining the axon of a particular macrochaete. The positions of microchaetes on the scutum and the shape of the fasciculation groups vary between closely related species. There is no correlation between body size, bristle patterns, and fasciculation patterns. Furthermore, none of these traits correlate with the phylogenetic relationships between the species studied. We discuss the possibility that macro- and microchaetes may have different functions and that these have implications for evolutionary constraints on bristle patterns. 相似文献

Calcium concentrations are strictly regulated in all biological cells, and one of the key molecules responsible for this regulation is the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor, which was known to form a homotetrameric Ca(2+) channel in the endoplasmic reticulum. The receptor is involved in neuronal transmission via Ca(2+) signaling and for many other functions that relate to morphological and physiological processes in living organisms. We analysed the three-dimensional structure of the ligand-free form of the receptor based on a single-particle technique using an originally developed electron microscope equipped with a helium-cooled specimen stage and an automatic particle picking system. We propose a model that explains the complex mechanism for the regulation of Ca(2+) release by co-agonists, Ca(2+), inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate based on the structure of multiple internal cavities and a porous balloon-shaped cytoplasmic domain containing a prominent L-shaped density which was assigned by the X-ray structure of the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate binding domain. 相似文献

The enzymological, physical, and immunological properties of soluble and bound forms of intracellular acid carboxypeptidase
isolated from fresh mycelia ofAspergillus saitoi are reported. In the broken mycelia, about 60% of the total activity was found in the 2,000×g precipitate, with most of the remainder in the 100,000×g supernantant. The highly purified enzymes, Ia and Ib, from the 100,000×g supernatant were found to be homogeneous by such criteria as disc gel electrophoresis at pH 9.4 The bound enzyme, II, was
solubilized from the 2,000×g precipitate by self-digestion at pH 6.4 and was highly purified by chromotography. The two forms of intracellular enzymes,
