The effect of a larger anemonefish Amphiprion clarkii (Bennett) on the social and mating system of a smaller congener Amphiprion perideraion (Bleeker) was investigated on a coral reef at Okinawa, Japan, where both species use the same host sea anemone Heteractis crispa (Ehrenberg). The population of A. perideraion consisted of adult, subadult and juvenile groups. Adult groups, which consisted of one or two adults and a varying number of subadults and juveniles, usually did not share the host with A. clarkii. In contrast, subadult and juvenile groups, which included no adults, always cohabited with A. clarkii. In the heterospecific groups, subadult A. perideraion were able to mature histologically, and changed to female when they were the largest among conspecific members, although their reproduction was suppressed by A. clarkii. After all members of A. clarkii emigrated or disappeared from a heterospecific group, adult A. perideraion could begin breeding. I suggest that A. perideraion in both heterospecific and conspecific groups adopt a mating strategy that involves waiting for vacated breeding posts because of their low mobility and a low host density.  相似文献

Social structure, growth and reproductive experience of a protandrous anemonefish,Amphiprion frenatus, were investigated on a coral reef in Okinawa, Japan. In a 67 m × 334 m study area, 24 breeding groups, 10 nonbreeding groups and 2 groups of unknown breeding experience were found around isolated sea anemones. One group usually consisted of 2 or 3 fish. The female in a breeding group was larger than not only her mate but also all males in other breeding groups. The body size and gonadal state of the largest individual in a nonbreeding group were intermediate between the female and male in a breeding group. In both breeding and nonbreeding groups, the largest fish retarded growth of the second largest. After the disappearance or removal of females, their mates took more than 1.5 years to attain the minimum functional female size (about 75 mm in standard length). This delayed sex change can be attributed to strong growth suppression by the female.  相似文献

Epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a pivotal role in cancer progression and metastasis in many types of malignancies, including colorectal cancer. Although the importance of EMT is also considered in colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC), its regulatory mechanisms have not been elucidated. We recently established a human colorectal NEC cell line, SS-2. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether these cells were sensitive to transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) and whether EMT could be induced through TGF-β1/Smad signaling, with the corresponding NEC cell-specific changes in invasiveness. In SS-2 cells, activation of TGF-β1 signaling, as indicated by phosphorylation of Smad2/3, was dose-dependent, demonstrating that SS-2 cells were responsive to TGF-β1. Analysis of EMT markers showed that mRNA levels changed with TGF-β1 treatment and that E-cadherin, an EMT marker, was expressed in cell-cell junctions even after TGF-β1 treatment. Invasion assays showed that TGF-β1-treated SS-2 cells invaded more rapidly than non-treated cells, and these cells demonstrated increased metalloproteinase activity and cell adhesion. Among integrins involved in cell-to-matrix adhesion, α2-integrin was exclusively upregulated in TGF-β1-treated SS-2 cells, but not in other colon cancer cell lines, and adhesion and invasion were inhibited by an anti-α2-integrin blocking antibody. Our findings suggest that α2-integrin may represent a novel therapeutic target for the metastasis of colorectal NEC cells.  相似文献

The genetic relatedness between the green and red forms of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, was analysed using an allozyme marker, MDH, detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Cross experiments showed that each of the two forms had form-specific alleles for MDH. Furthermore, there was no overlapping in the alleles for MDH between the field populations of the two forms, suggesting that no gene flow would occur between them in the field.  相似文献

Our previous studies suggested that salmon gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (sGnRH) neurons regulate both final maturation and migratory behavior in homing salmonids. Activation of sGnRH neurons can occur during upstream migration. We therefore examined expression of genes encoding the precursors of sGnRH, sGnRH‐I, and sGnRH‐II, in discrete forebrain loci of prespawning chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta. Fish were captured from 1997 through 1999 along their homing pathway: coastal areas, a midway of the river, 4 km downstream of the natal hatchery, and the hatchery. Amounts of sGnRH mRNAs in fresh frozen sections including the olfactory bulb (OB), terminal nerve (TN), ventral telencephalon (VT), nucleus preopticus parvocellularis anterioris (PPa), and nucleus preopticus magnocellularis (PM) were determined by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reactions. The amounts of sGnRH‐II mRNA were higher than those of sGnRH‐I mRNA, while they showed similar changes during upstream migration. In the OB and TN, the amounts of sGnRH mRNAs elevated from the coast to the natal hatchery. In the VT and PPa, they elevated along with the progress of final maturation. Such elevation was also observed in the rostroventral, middle, and dorsocaudal parts of the PM. The amounts of gonadotropin IIβ and somatolactin mRNAs in the pituitary also increased consistently with the elevation of gene expression for sGnRH. These results, in combination with lines of previous evidence, indicate that sGnRH neurons are activated in almost all the forebrain loci during the last phases of spawning migration, resulting in coordination of final gonadal maturation and migratory behavior to the spawning ground. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
