A total of 27 maize-based products destined for human consumption were collected from retail outlets within the city of Glasgow in the UK and were analysed for the presence of aflatoxins using immunoaftinity column chromatography with fluorescence detection and for fumonisins by competitive ELISA. Aflatoxins were detected at a trace level below 4 in eight (30%) of the 27 samples tested, no sample contained aflatoxins at a high level although one sample of sweetcorn did contain aflatoxins at a level of 5-10 Fumonisins were detected in eight (30%) of the samples at levels from 1 to 8mgkg-1 and a further eight samples contained fumonisin at a level below 1 mgkg-1 but above the detectable level. The highest concentration of fumonisins was found in a sample of fine corn meal at 8-12mgkg-1.  相似文献

Summary Three cases of distal duplication 14q are presented. The first two cases are cousins in a kindred segregating a balanced translocation t(14;18)(q31;q23). The third case resulted from a maternal translocation t(14;18)(q24;p11). By review of these cases and those previously reported, a distal duplication 14q syndrome is further delineated. Common features include postnatal growth retardation, mental retardation, hypotonia, microcephaly, slanted palpebral fissures, ocular hypertelorism, sparse eyelashes and eyebrows, nasal dysmorphism, tented lip, micrognathia, posteriorly rotated ears, and minor skeletal anomalies.  相似文献

Sucrose was unsuitable as an osmotic stabilizer in buffer solutions and media used for transformation of Streptomyces venezuelae ISP5230. Its replacement with NaCl, together with other modifications in the procedure, allowed efficient formation and regeneration of protoplasts but did not support transformation of S. venezuelae ISP5230 by vectors pIJ41 and pIJ941. With pIJ702, transformants with a low plasmid-copy-number and altered growth characteristics were obtained. Both pIJ702 and pIJ941, but not pIJ41, transformed S. venezuelae 13s; when pIJ941 was used, the plasmid in 18 of 20 transformants contained a deletion in the region reported to code for replication and transfer. The modified plasmid transformed S. venezuelae ISP5230 efficiently and was used to introduce a fragment of DNA from the pab locus of the wild-type into a Cml-1 mutant of ISP5230 blocked in chloramphenicol formation. Transformants that overproduced p-aminobenzoic acid were obtained but they remained blocked in chloramphenicol production; thus, the cloned pab fragment did not contain genes able to complement the cml-1 mutation. The results also suggest that the Cml-1 phenotype is not due to a defective reaction common to the biosynthesis of p-aminobenzoic acid and chloramphenicol.  相似文献

Strains of Bacillus cereus can produce a heat-stable toxin (cereulide). In this study, 101 Bacillus strains representing 7 Bacillus species were tested for production of heat-stable toxins. Strains of B. megaterium, B. firmus and B. simplex were found to produce novel heat-stable toxins, which showed varying levels of toxicity. B. cereus strains (18 out of 54) were positive for toxin production. Thirteen were of serovar H1, and it was of interest that some were of clinical origin. Two were of serovars 17B and 20, which are not usually implicated in the emetic syndrome. Partial purification of the novel B. megaterium, B. simplex and B. firmus toxins showed they had similar physical characteristics to the B. cereus emetic toxin, cereulide.  相似文献

The rational design of DNA/RNA aptamers for use as molecular probes depends on a clear understanding of their structural elements in relation to target-aptamer binding interactions. We present a simple method to create aptamer probes that can occupy two different structural states. Then, based on the difference in binding affinity between these states, target-aptamer binding interactions can be elucidated. The basis of our two-state system comes from the incorporation of azobenzene within the DNA strand. Azobenzene can be used to photoregulate the melting of DNA-duplex structures. When incorporated into aptamers, the light-regulated conformational change of azobenzene can be used to analyze how aptamer secondary structure is involved in target binding. Azobenzene-modified aptamers showed no change in target selectivity, but showed differences in binding affinity as a function of the number, position, and conformation of azobenzene modifications. Aptamer probes that can change binding affinity on demand may have future uses in targeted drug delivery and photodynamic therapy.  相似文献

The African citrus triozid (ACT), Trioza erytreae (Del Guercio), is the primary vector of Candidatus Liberibacter africanus (CLaf), the causative agent of Africa citrus greening disease (ACGD). This study evaluates the diversity of ACT parasitoids and further characterizes endosymbionts associated with both T. erytreae and its parasitoids that could be used as biological control agents of T. erytreae and management of ACGD. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene was used to reconstruct T. erytreae and its parasitoids phylogeny, while 16S rRNA gene was used for the bacterial phylogeny. One well-supported clade of ACT was detected within the Triozidae phylogeny, while the parasitoid species clustered into four groups within eulophid and encyrtid phylogeny. The phylogenetic result of parasitoids was supported by morphological identification where five different parasitoid species could be identified, that is Tamarixia dryi, Psyllaephagus pulvinatus, Tetrastichus sp., Aphidencyrtus cassatus and Charipine species. Moreover, four eubacterial symbionts (Wolbachia,Rickettsia,Arsenophonus and Candidatus Liberibacter sp.) were detected in T. erytreae and three symbionts (Wolbachia,Rickettsia and Cardinuim) in the parasitoid specimens. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic inferences clustered the identified eubacterial symbionts within α and γ proteobacteria subdivisions. Phylogenetic inferences of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that Wolbachia strains from ACT and the parasitoids did not form a single monophyletic clade; however, both clustered within Supergroup B. The impacts of these parasitoid species and endosymbionts on ACT are still unknown, but their occurrence and broad distribution indicate the possibility of future use for control of T. erytreae.  相似文献

Melissopalynological analysis of 60 honey samples collected from 50 Kenyan Top Bar Hives in the North Sudanian phytogeographical region of Burkina Faso established the plant species foraged by honeybees Apis mellifera adansonii. Forty-three pollen types from 29 families were identified in the honey samples. The most common families were Mimosaceae (9.30%), Asteraceae (6.98%) and Anacardiaceae (6.98%). The most frequently visited plants were Combretum (66.66%), Tridax procumbens (66.66), Acacia seyal-group (50%), Cleome viscosa-group (50%) and Cyperus esculentus (41.67%). The results showed that Apis mellifera adansonii is polylectic with a heterogeneous foraging behaviour. Pollen analysis showed that the honeys from the two main honey flows of Burkina Faso were polyfloral.  相似文献
