Caenorhabditis elegans has been used for over a decade to characterize signaling cascades controlling innate immune responses. However, what initiates these responses in the worm has remained elusive. To gain a better understanding of the initiating events we delineated genome-wide immune responses to the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa in worms heavily-colonized by the pathogen versus worms visibly not colonized. We found that infection responses in both groups were identical, suggesting that immune responses were not correlated with colonization and its associated damage. Quantitative RT-PCR measurements further showed that pathogen secreted factors were not able to induce an immune response, but exposure to a non-pathogenic Pseudomonas species was. These findings raise the possibility that the C.elegans immune response is initiated by recognition of microbe-associated molecular patterns. In the absence of orthologs of known pattern recognition receptors, C. elegans may rely on novel mechanisms, thus holding the potential to advance our understanding of evolutionarily conserved strategies for pathogen recognition. 相似文献

2-Mercaptoethanol (2-ME) is used as a medium supplement to enhance the proliferation of lymphocytes culturedin vitro. In this study, we have examined the effects of 2-ME on cell growth and on SCE induction in cultures of unstimulated and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated Fischer 344 rat lymphocytes. There were virtually no metaphases detected in cells cultured without PHA. In PHA-stimulated cultures, 2-ME decreased SCE-frequency but it enhanced SCE frequency in the presence of S to 12.5 µM bromodeoxyuridine (BRd U). Both mitotic and replication indices were increased in the PHA/2-ME system. The levels of incorporated exogenous thymidine, in the presence of 2-ME, were relatively low in unstimulated cells, suggesting that 2-ME is not mitogenic for T-cells. However, 2-ME enhanced PHA-induced response of T-cells as evidenced by increased levels of thymidine incorporation into cellular DNA. The growth promoting effects and the decrease in SCE frequency caused by 2-ME upon PHA stimulation indicate that 2-ME may alter the nature of interaction between PHA and cellular activating properties or the replicative processes.Abbreviations BRdU

Background, aim, and scope
In spite of the increasing application of life cycle assessment (LCA) for engineering evaluation of systems and products, the application of LCA in the mining industry is limited. For example, a search in the Engineering Compendex database using the keywords “life cycle assessment” results in 2,257 results, but only 19 are related to the mining industry. Also, mining companies are increasingly adopting ISO 14001 certified environmental management systems (EMSs). A key requirement of ISO certified EMSs is continual improvement, which can be better managed with life cycle thinking. This paper presents a review of the current application of LCA in the mining industry. It discusses the current application, the issues, and challenges and makes relevant recommendations for new research to improve the current situation. 相似文献134.
The ventral sucker of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria is a cupshaped structure that is attached to the ventral surface of the organism by a homogeneous connective tissue that surrounds the acetabular glands. The sucker consists of an extensive complex of circular and longitudinal muscles. The longitudinal muscles extend outwoard in a radial pattern to form the cup of the organ. Intermingled with the muscles are nerve bundles and subtegumental cells (cytons). Dendritic nerve fibers connect to sensory papillae which are found on the surface tegument. Two types of sensory papillae are present: a commonly found unsheathed uniciliated papilla, and a previously unidentified tegumental encapsulated structure.
