Changes in growth and ultrastructure of Azolla caroliniana in response to elevated UV-B radiation were investigated. Exposure of plants to UV-B radiation for 1, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h exhibited a significant decrease in biomass and relative growth rate. This decrease resulted in an increase in doubling time over the control. Also, Chl a and b contents were significantly decreased especially after 16 h. The reduction was accompanied by a decrease in 5-aminolaevulinic acid content (precursor of chlorophyll). On the other hand, contents of carotenoid and UV-absorbing phenolic compounds (flavonoids and anthocyanins) were increased. 相似文献

In Escherichia coli many enzymes including MurG are directly involved in the synthesis and assembly of peptidoglycan. MurG is an essential glycosyltransferase catalysing the last intracellular step of peptidoglycan synthesis. To elucidate its role during elongation and division events, localization of MurG using immunofluorescence microscopy was performed. MurG exhibited a random distribution in the cell envelope with a relatively higher intensity at the division site. This mid-cell localization was dependent on the presence of a mature divisome. Its localization in the lateral cell wall appeared to require the presence of MreCD. This could be indicative of a potential interaction between MurG and other proteins. Investigating this by immunoprecipitation revealed the association of MurG with MreB and MraY in the same protein complex. In view of this, the loss of rod shape of DeltamreBCD strain could be ascribed to the loss of MurG membrane localization. Consequently, this could prevent the localized supply of the lipid II precursor to the peptidoglycan synthesizing machinery involved in cell elongation. It is postulated that the involvement of MurG in the peptidoglycan synthesis concurs with two complexes, one implicated in cell elongation and the other in division. The Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) accounts for 65 % of the world production of long stable cultivars. Taking into consideration the competition of other cotton producing countries, it should be of great importance to control pests, which attack the cotton plants to improve the yield and its quality. The main objective of this study is to develop new approaches for the management of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. within an IPM program, that include synthetic insecticides rationalization, and maximiziation the role of the biological control agents. Sunflower plants Helianthus annuus (Asterales: Asteraceae) raised in rows surrounding plots of cotton were used as trap plants to attract some biological agents, which subsequently lead to check the build-up of the cotton leafworm population. This scientific phenomenon was attributed to the main chemical constituent of sunflower plants, which has been proved to be the polyhydroxy flavone "quercetin". Field data of the two successive seasons 2004 and 2005 revealed that: (a) the total number of insect predators, Coccinella undecimpunctata, Paederus alfierli, Chrysopa vulgaris, Orius laevigatus, Scymnus synacus, and true spiders in the cotton plots surrounded by either one or two rows of sunflower plants significantly exceeded the corresponding numbers in the cotton plots without sunflower plants., (b) the least number of cotton leafworm Spodoptera littorolis larvae infestation was recorded simultaneously in the cotton plots surrounded by sunflower plants. Moreover, laboratory studies assured the antifeeding properties of quercetin against the 4th instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis. Quercetin at a concentration rate of 4000 ppm, showed abnormal behaviour represented in feeding stop, growth inhibition and development retardation. Deformation of pupae, moths, and reduction up to 50% in egg laying was also noticed after quercetin application to the larvae. 相似文献

Three sugarcane fields in Bundaberg and four fields in each of the Burdekin, Tully and Innisfail (Queensland, Australia) were
sampled for spores of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes). This entomopathogenic fungus is the active ingredient in the biocide “BioCaneTM”, which was developed for the management of the greyback canegrub Dermolepida albohirtum (Waterhosue) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and other scarabs in cane fields. Fields sampled were of different crop ages and
all had a history of BioCaneTM treatment in Plant Cane in past years. Soil samples were taken in each field from four depths (0–10, 10–20, 20–30 and 30–40 cm
below soil level) with the use of an auger. Spore levels were highest at the depths of 10–20 and 20–30 cm. Spore levels differed
between locations with Innisfail and Tully recording the highest spore counts. Spores were also found in the inter-row space
in plots sampled in Tully. Sampling statistics were determined for M. anisopliae spores at the four soil depths with 0.1 and 0.25 precision levels. Three sampling methods were compared (use of marker beads;
use of 100 mm auger and 150 mm auger). Samples that relied on marker beads resulted in higher spore counts, however, an auger
can still be used since BioCaneTM does not normally contain coloured markers. Results obtained demonstrate the ability of the pathogen to translocate in soil
profile and across rows, most likely due to grub movements and other soil fauna. Sampling for M. anisopliae spores provides good monitoring of their levels in soil. The implications of this on grub management decisions are discussed. 相似文献

The interconnection network is one of the key architectural components in any parallel computer. The distribution of the traffic
injected into the network is among the factors that greatly influences network performance. The uniform traffic pattern has
been adopted in many existing network performance evaluation studies due to the tractability of the resulting analytical modelling
approach. However, many real applications exhibit non-uniform traffic patterns such as hot-spot traffic. K-ary n-cubes have been the mostly widely used in the implementation of practical parallel systems. Extensive research studies have
been conducted on the performance modelling and evaluation of these networks. Nonetheless, most of these studies have been
confined to uniform traffic distributions and have been based on software simulation. The present paper proposes a new stochastic
model to predict message latency in k-ary
n-cubes with deterministic routing in the presence of hot-spot traffic. The model has been validated through simulation experiments
and has shown a close agreement with simulation results.

Background
Identifying the location and the volume of the prostate is important for ultrasound-guided prostate brachytherapy. Prostate volume is also important for prostate cancer diagnosis. Manual outlining of the prostate border is able to determine the prostate volume accurately, however, it is time consuming and tedious. Therefore, a number of investigations have been devoted to designing algorithms that are suitable for segmenting the prostate boundary in ultrasound images. The most popular method is the deformable model (snakes), a method that involves designing an energy function and then optimizing this function.
