Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge and perception of depression among students of University Sains Malaysia (USM), in Penang, Peninsular Malaysia.Method Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a pre-validated 21-item questionnaire among students at USM.Results A total of 500 respondents participated in the survey comprising 24.6% (n=123) males and 75.4% (n=377) females. Half (50.0%, n=250) were Malays, followed by Chinese (44.0%, n=220) and Indians (6.0%, n=30). Whilst exploring the respondents' knowledge of the symptoms of depression, it was found that Chinese females had a comparatively better knowledge (P=0.058) of the symptoms of depression in comparison with Malays and Indians. Overall, social issues were attributed as the possible cause of depression. A cursory knowledge level was observed regarding medication for depression. Female students were more inclined towards the use of alternative and traditional medicines. However, with regard to seeking professional help, consultation with a psychiatrist was preferred by the majority.Conclusion Overall, a moderate level of knowledge about the symptoms of depression and a cursory knowledge of its therapy were observed. Those with personal experience of depression had better knowledge of the symptoms and therapy. Alternative treatments and traditional medicines were also favoured. There is a risk that this may affect the ability of Malaysian youths to seek evidence-based mental health care. 相似文献

Microbial metabolism of cannflavin A (1) and B (2), two biologically active flavonoids isolated from Cannabis sativa L., produced five metabolites (3–7). Incubation of 1 and 2 with Mucor ramannianus (ATCC 9628) and Beauveria bassiana (ATCC 13144), respectively, yielded 6″S,7″-dihydroxycannflavin A (3), 6″S,7″-dihydroxycannflavin A 7-sulfate (4) and 6″S,7″-dihydroxycannflavin A 4′-O-α-l-rhamnopyranoside (5), and cannflavin B 7-O-β-d-4?-O-methylglucopyranoside (6) and cannflavin B 7-sulfate (7), respectively. In East African small-holder farming of maize, the cattle forage legume, Desmodium uncinatum is used as an intercrop due to its allelopathic inhibition of parasitism by Striga hermonthica, an obligate parasitic weed that can devastate the maize crop. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the root extract of D. uncinatum revealed isoschaftoside to be the main compound in the most potent fraction inhibiting growth of germinated S. hermonthica radicles. Bioassays repeated with isoschaftoside isolated from a different plant source, Passiflora incarnata, proved it to be a biologically active component. Analysis of the root exudates produced by hydroponically grown D. uncinatum showed isoschaftoside to be present in the hydroponic media at biologically active concentrations of 10–100 nM. 相似文献

Testosterone (T) regulates expression of protein-encoding genes directly through androgen receptor (AR) targeting androgen response element (ARE) in gene promoters or indirectly through non-genotropic mechanisms, but only limited information is available about T effects on expression of gene-regulatory non-coding miRNAs. Here, we investigate the effect of T on miRNA expression profiles in the female mouse liver using miRXplore microarrays and quantitative RT-PCR. T treatment for 3 weeks induced upregulation of the 6 miRNAs miR-22, miR-690, miR-122, let-7A, miR-30D and let-7D, reaching maximal expression at different time-points during T treatment. This upregulation was transient, i.e. it disappeared after T withdrawal for 12 weeks, and it was rather robust since it was not essentially affected by blood-stage infections with Plasmodium chabaudi malaria. In silico analysis revealed an ARE in the miR-122 promoter, while the other 5 miRNAs did not contain any ARE in their 2000 bp promoters. The T-induced upregulation of the 6 miRNAs coincided with a downregulation of some of their target protein-encoding genes, the majority of which did incidentally not contain any ARE in their promoters. T treatment did not affect expression of AR and estrogen receptor β (ERβ), but significantly downregulated the miR-22 target genes ERα and aromatase. This downregulation is presumably not caused by T after its aromatase-mediated conversion to E2 through ER, but rather by the T-induced upregulation of miR-22. Collectively, our data suggest that T can regulate expression of distinct miRNAs in vivo by both genotropic and non-genotropic mechanisms. 相似文献

Cyanobacteria have the ability to form associations with organisms from all domains of life, notably with plants, which they provide with fixed nitrogen, among other substances. This study was aimed at developing artificial associations between non-heterocystous cyanobacteria and selected crop plants. We isolated several non-heterocystous cyanobacteria from various rice fields. The cultures were tested for their capacity to produce the plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and the possible role of IAA in the association of cyanobacteria with seedling roots was evaluated. Axenic cultures were co-inoculated with 10-day-old plant seedlings of Triticum aestivum, Vigna radiata and Pisum sativum and incubated for 1 week. Cyanobacterial association with the roots of these seedlings was quantified by measuring chlorophyll-a. Cyanobacterial association with the roots was observed by light microscopy as well as by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Based on sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the isolates were identified as Synechocystis sp., Chroococcidiopsis sp., Leptolyngbya sp., and Phormidium sp. CLSM observations revealed the intimate association of cyanobacteria with the seedling roots as well as invasion of the roots and root cells. Strains producing IAA were more efficient in the colonization of the roots than those that lacked this ability. IAA-producing cyanobacteria possess a tryptophan-dependent pathway, and these cyanobacteria showed IAA synthesis activity in the presence of roots in media lacking tryptophan. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that non-heterocystous cyanobacteria also have the potential for use in agriculture to improve the growth and yield of crop plants that do not naturally form associations with cyanobacteria. 相似文献

Background
Due to the variation and mutation of the races of Pseudoperonospora cubensis, downy mildew has in recent years become the most devastating leaf disease of cucumber worldwide. Novel resistance to downy mildew has been identified in the wild Cucumis species, C. hystrix Chakr. After the successful hybridization between C. hystrix and cultivated cucumber (C. sativus L.), an introgression line (IL5211S) was identified as highly resistant to downy mildew. Nucleotide-binding site and leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR) genes are the largest class of disease resistance genes cloned from plant with highly conserved domains, which can be used to facilitate the isolation of candidate genes associated with downy mildew resistance in IL5211S. 相似文献939.
Background
The biopharmaceutical industry requires cell lines to have an optimal proliferation rate and a high integral viable cell number resulting in a maximum volumetric recombinant protein product titre. Nutrient feeding has been shown to boost cell number and productivity in fed-batch culture, but cell line engineering is another route one may take to increase these parameters in the bioreactor. The use of CHO-K1 cells with a c-myc plasmid allowing for over-expressing c-Myc (designated cMycCHO) gives a higher integral viable cell number. Etodolac (ET) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with proved potential antitumor and uric acid lowering effects. It
shows dissolution rate-dependent bioavailability. This work was carried out to improve the dissolution rate of etodolac using
three carriers of known potential to improve solubility and hence dissolution rate of poorly soluble drugs through coevaporation
technique. The polymeric surfactant inutec, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and tromethamine were used at three different
drug/carrier ratios. The dissolution rate of ET at pH 1.2 and 6.8 is improved in all of the solid dispersion systems compared
to that of the pure drug and physical mixtures. DSC of coevaporates at 1:5 drug/carrier ratio providing the fastest dissolution
rate suggested loss of ET crystallinity which was further confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Inutec-based coevaporate was chosen
for the formulation of ET chewable tablets. Chewable tablets (F3) that met the USP monograph specifications for ET tablets,
with 86% dissolved amount within 15 min, was chosen for in vivo absorption study in comparison with pure ET-filled hard gelatin capsules. The results showed significantly higher mean C
max and shorter mean T
