The ancient Egyptians practiced medicine with highly professional methods. They had advanced knowledge of anatomy and surgery. Also, they treated a lot of diseases including dental, gynecological, gastrointestinal, and urinary disorders. They could diagnose diabetes and cancer. The used therapeutics extended from different plants to include several animal products and minerals. Some of these plants are still used in the present day. Fortunately, they documented their life details by carving on stone, clay, or papyri. Although a lot of these records have been lost or destroyed, the surviving documents represent a huge source of knowledge in different scientific aspects including medicine. This review article is an attempt to understand some information about traditional medicine in ancient Egypt, we will look closely at some basics, sources of information of Egyptian medicine in addition to common treated diseases and therapeutics in this great civilization.  相似文献

The aroma emitted from the different organs of two Salvia verbenaca L. populations from Jordan were extracted by Solid Phase Micro‐Extraction (SPME) and then analyzed by GC/MS. The emission profile of the stem, leaf and sepal samples from the Mediterranean zone (Al‐Salt) was dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons (68.0 %, 33.7 %, and 42.2 %, respectively). The emission profile of flowering parts including pre‐flowering buds, fully expanded flowers and petals was dominated by oxygenated monoterpenes (58.6 %, 59.3 % and 87.1 %, respectively). The major constituent detected in these organs was trans‐sabinene hydrate acetate (range 14.5 %–87.0 %). On the other hand, samples collected from Irano‐Turanian zone showed different emission patterns. While the stems, leaves and petal emissions were dominated by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (54.9 %, 76.8 % and 52.6 %, respectively), monoterpene hydrocarbons dominated the emission profiles of the pre‐flowering buds (75.1 %) and fully expanded flowers (73.6 %). Petals emissions were characterized by high concentrations of oxygenated monoterpenes (58.8 %). Notably, trans‐sabinene hydrate dominated most organs emissions except for leaves (range 20.0 %–58.8 %). Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) revealed two different clusters related to the two different geographical zones. The current investigation revealed two ecotypes of S. verbenaca that could result in two different chemotypes. Trans‐sabinene hydrate acetate and trans‐sabinene hydrate are suggested compounds for identifying these two chemotypes.  相似文献

The influence of ionizing radiation on the growth of apple mycoflora and the aflatoxins production was investigated. Four strains of fungal isolates, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatuis, A. niger, Penicillium expansum, were used. Four doses of gamma radiation were applied (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 KGy). The elimination of aflatoxins under selected conditions was detected by using HPLC techniques. Doses of 0.5 KGy stimulated the production of aflatoxins by all fungi tested while 1.0-2.0 KGy reduced the aflatoxins production. The studies were also carried out to investigate the effect of pre- and post-inoculation of both irradiated and non-irradiated fungal spores on irradiated and non-irradiated apples. The results showed the necessity of irradiation of fresh apple fruits followed by good preservation conditions. The results showed also that the effect of radiation is influences on the apple mycoflora producing aflatoxins and not the apple itself.  相似文献

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks among the 10 most common cancers worldwide. The main risk factors for its development are hepatitis B and C virus infections. Hepatitis B and C viruses induce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress that could predispose a cell to mutagenesis and proliferation. Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) catalyses the detoxification of free radicals, thus playing a crucial role in the protection against damage. A valine (Val) to alanine (Ala) substitution at amino acid 9, mapping within the mitochondrion-targeting sequence of the MnSOD gene, has been associated with an increased cancer risk. The aim of our study was to investigate a possible association of the Val/Ala-MnSOD polymorphism and HCC development in Moroccan patients. Genotypes were determined by means of PCR and RFLP analysis in 96 patients with HCC and 222 control subjects matched for age, sex, and ethnicity. Homozygous Ala/Ala carriers were 31% in the cases and 18% in the controls, which corresponds to an odds ratio (OR) of 2.89, with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.47-5.68. Stratification into subgroups based on HCV infection status revealed an even more increased risk for homozygous Ala/Ala carriers with hepatitis C infection (38.2% in the cases versus 14.8% in the control subjects OR, 5.09; 95% CI, 1.76-14.66). Our findings provide further evidence of an association between the Ala-9Val MnSOD polymorphism and HCC occurrence in hepatitis C virus-infected Moroccan patients.  相似文献

Background

The aim of this study, conducted in Europe, was to develop a validated risk factor based model to predict RSV-related hospitalisation in premature infants born 33–35 weeks'' gestational age (GA).

Methods

The predictive model was developed using risk factors captured in the Spanish FLIP dataset, a case-control study of 183 premature infants born between 33–35 weeks'' GA who were hospitalised with RSV, and 371 age-matched controls. The model was validated internally by 100-fold bootstrapping. Discriminant function analysis was used to analyse combinations of risk factors to predict RSV hospitalisation. Successive models were chosen that had the highest probability for discriminating between hospitalised and non-hospitalised infants. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted.

Results

An initial 15 variable model was produced with a discriminant function of 72% and an area under the ROC curve of 0.795. A step-wise reduction exercise, alongside recalculations of some variables, produced a final model consisting of 7 variables: birth ± 10 weeks of start of season, birth weight, breast feeding for ≤ 2 months, siblings ≥ 2 years, family members with atopy, family members with wheeze, and gender. The discrimination of this model was 71% and the area under the ROC curve was 0.791. At the 0.75 sensitivity intercept, the false positive fraction was 0.33. The 100-fold bootstrapping resulted in a mean discriminant function of 72% (standard deviation: 2.18) and a median area under the ROC curve of 0.785 (range: 0.768–0.790), indicating a good internal validation. The calculated NNT for intervention to treat all at risk patients with a 75% level of protection was 11.7 (95% confidence interval: 9.5–13.6).

Conclusion

A robust model based on seven risk factors was developed, which is able to predict which premature infants born between 33–35 weeks'' GA are at highest risk of hospitalisation from RSV. The model could be used to optimise prophylaxis with palivizumab across Europe.  相似文献
