Coir fibers received three treatments, namely washing with water, alkali treatment (mercerization) and bleaching. Treated fibers were incorporated in starch/ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOH) blends. Mechanical and thermal properties of starch/EVOH/coir biocomposites were evaluated. Fiber morphology and the fiber/matrix interface were further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All treatments produced surface modifications and improved the thermal stability of the fibers and consequently of the composites. The best results were obtained for mercerized fibers where the tensile strength was increased by about 53% as compared to the composites with untreated fibers, and about 33.3% as compared to the composites without fibers. The mercerization improved fiber–matrix adhesion, allowing an efficient stress transfer from the matrix to the fibers. The increased adhesion between fiber and matrix was also observed by SEM. Treatment with water also improved values of Young’s modulus which were increased by about 75% as compared to the blends without the fibers. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging, noninvasive technique of neurostimulation for treating pain. However, the mechanisms and pathways involved in its analgesic effects are poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the effects of direct current stimulation (DCS) on thermal and mechanical nociceptive thresholds and on the activation of the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord (DHSC) in rats; these central nervous system areas are associated with pain processing. Male Wistar rats underwent cathodal DCS of the motor cortex and, while still under stimulation, were evaluated using tail-flick and paw pressure nociceptive tests. Sham stimulation and naive rats were used as controls. We used a randomized design; the assays were not blinded to the experimenter. Immunoreactivity of the early growth response gene 1 (Egr-1), which is a marker of neuronal activation, was evaluated in the PAG and DHSC, and enkephalin immunoreactivity was evaluated in the DHSC. DCS did not change the thermal nociceptive threshold; however, it increased the mechanical nociceptive threshold of both hind paws compared with that of controls, characterizing a topographical effect. DCS decreased the Egr-1 labeling in the PAG and DHSC as well as the immunoreactivity of spinal enkephalin. Altogether, the data suggest that DCS disinhibits the midbrain descending analgesic pathway, consequently inhibiting spinal nociceptive neurons and causing an increase in the nociceptive threshold. This study reinforces the idea that the motor cortex participates in the neurocircuitry that is involved in analgesia and further clarifies the mechanisms of action of tDCS in pain treatment. 相似文献

Structural and functional traits of organisms are known to be related to the size of individuals and to the size of their colonies when they belong to one. Among such traits, propensity to inquilinism in termites is known to relate positively to colony size. Larger termitaria hold larger diversity of facultative inquilines than smaller nests, whereas obligate inquilines seem unable to settle in nests smaller than a threshold volume. Respective underlying mechanisms, however, remain hypothetical. Here we test one of such hypotheses, namely, that nest defence correlates negatively to nest volume in Constrictotermes cyphergaster termites (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae). As a surrogate to defence, we used ‘patrolling rate’, i.e., the number of termite individuals attending per unit time an experimentally damaged spot on the outer wall of their termitaria. We found that patrolling rate decayed allometrically with increasing nest size. Conspicuously higher patrolling rates occurred in smaller nests, while conspicuously lower rates occurred in larger nests presenting volumes in the vicinity of the threshold value for the establishment of inquilinism. This could be proven adaptive for the host and guest. At younger nest age, host colonies are smaller and presumably more vulnerable and unstable. Enhanced defence rates may, hence, prevent eventual risks to hosts from inquilinism at the same time that it prevents inquilines to settle in a still unstable nest. Conversely, when colonies grow and maturate enough to stand threats, they would invest in priorities other than active defence, opening an opportunity for inquilines to settle in nests which are more suitable or less risky. Magonia pubescens A. St.-Hil. is a Brazilian species often used in ethnopharmacology for wound and pain healing and seborrhea treatment. For the first time, essential oils (EOs) obtained from M. pubescens inflorescences were studied. The plant materials (Montes Claros, Brazil, 2018) were submitted to different gamma-radiation doses and their chemical compositions were analyzed by GC/MS and GC-FID. The cytotoxic activity of the EOs was evaluated against K562 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. A total of 30 components were identified, being 24 compounds detected for the first time in M. pubescens. The main obtained components were hotrienol (35.9 %), cis-linalool oxide (17.0 %) and trans-linalool oxide (10.2 %). The chemical composition of the EO was slightly affected by the applied radiation doses. Irradiated and non-irradiated EOs showed cytotoxic activity against both cell lines and the non-irradiated EO sample was the most active against the K562 cell lines (IC50=22.10±1.98). 相似文献

The objectives of this research were to: 1. evaluate the circadian activity patterns of lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) throughout the seasons and 2. study the influence of moonlight, temperature and rainfall on the activity patterns and habitat selection of this species, in the coastal sand shrub in southern Brazil. From June 2005 to June 2006, eight tapirs were monitored in a large enclosure containing open and vegetation-covered areas, using four camera traps. Differences in activity patterns within seasons were found. Tapir predominately presented nocturnal-crepuscular activity; however, they differed in the winter, with cathemeral activity patterns. Covered areas were mostly used during periods of extreme temperatures, with less diurnal and more nocturnal activities within these areas, on hotter days. Activity in open areas mainly occurred during periods of intermediate temperatures, both during the day and in the night. Moonlight intensity did not influence nocturnal activities. On days of precipitation of 34 mm or more, there was no record of open-area activities, despite constant activity in covered-area. 相似文献

This study analyzes both cell migration and exudation responses elicited by substance P (SP) in the mouse pleural cavity. SP caused, 4 h after its administration into the mouse pleural cavity, a dose-related recruitment of leukocytes (ED50 = 14.2 nmol), mainly due to mononuclears. Leukocytes peaked between 2 and 4 h, being followed by a slight decay that remained elevated for up to 24 h. Exudation, although small, was significantly elevated from 2 to 96 h after. NK1 (FK 888) or NK3 (SR 142801), but not NK2 (SR 48968) tachykinin receptor antagonists, significantly inhibited cell migration. HOE 140 and NPC 17731, bradykinin B2 receptor antagonists, caused graded inhibition of cell influx (ID50s of 0.03 and 0.04 pmol), but des-Arg9-Leu8-BK, B1 receptor antagonist, had no effect. The nitric oxide inhibitors L-NOARG and L-NAME, but not D-NAME, significantly inhibited SP-induced pleurisy. Pretreatment of the animals with indomethacin, dexamethasone, terfenadine, theophylline or salbutamol produced significant inhibition of the inflammatory parameters, whereas cromolyn only inhibited exudation. These results indicate that intrapleural injection of SP in mice elicit a long-lasting inflammatory reaction that is characterized by the participation of nitric oxide, kinins, cyclooxygenase metabolites and histamine. Antiasthmatic drugs such as theophylline, salbutamol, dexamethasone, and, to a lesser extent cromolyn, also markedly inhibit this inflammatory reaction. The Escherichia coli rodA and ftsW genes and the spoVE gene of Bacillus subtilis encode membrane proteins that control peptidoglycan synthesis during cellular elongation, division and sporulation respectively. While rodA and ftsW are essential genes in E. coli , the B. subtilis spoVE gene is dispensable for growth and is only required for the synthesis of the spore cortex peptidoglycan. In this work, we report on the characterization of a B. subtilis gene, designated rodA , encoding a homologue of E. coli RodA. We found that the growth of a B. subtilis strain carrying a fusion of rodA to the IPTG-inducible Pspac promoter is inducer dependent. Limiting concentrations of inducer caused the formation of spherical cells, which eventually lysed. An increase in the level of IPTG induced a sphere-to-short rod transition that re-established viability. Higher levels of inducer restored normal cell length. Staining of the septal or polar cap peptidoglycan by a fluorescent lectin was unaffected during growth of the mutant under restrictive conditions. Our results suggest that rodA functions in maintaining the rod shape of the cell and that this function is essential for viability. In addition, RodA has an irreplaceable role in the extension of the lateral walls of the cell. Electron microscopy observations support these conclusions. The ultrastructural analysis further suggests that the growth arrest that accompanies loss of the rod shape is caused by the cell's inability to construct a division septum capable of spanning the enlarged cell. RodA is similar over its entire length to members of a large protein family (SEDS, for shape, elongation, division and sporulation). Members of the SEDS family are probably present in all eubacteria that synthesize peptidoglycan as part of their cell envelope. 相似文献

Glaucoma is a progressive disease due to damage in the optic nerve with associated functional losses. Although the relationship between structural and functional progression in glaucoma is well established, there is disagreement on how this association evolves over time. In addressing this issue, we propose a new class of non‐Gaussian linear‐mixed models to estimate the correlations among subject‐specific effects in multivariate longitudinal studies with a skewed distribution of random effects, to be used in a study of glaucoma. This class provides an efficient estimation of subject‐specific effects by modeling the skewed random effects through the log‐gamma distribution. It also provides more reliable estimates of the correlations between the random effects. To validate the log‐gamma assumption against the usual normality assumption of the random effects, we propose a lack‐of‐fit test using the profile likelihood function of the shape parameter. We apply this method to data from a prospective observation study, the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study, to present a statistically significant association between structural and functional change rates that leads to a better understanding of the progression of glaucoma over time. 相似文献
