Cyclic phenomena have been the focus of many studies in stressed conifer forests. In these systems, suppressed seedlings are released following the synchronous death of canopy trees. These cycles occur over hundreds of years, and thus studying them in the field is difficult, if not impossible in some cases. This difficulty highlights the advantages of vegetation modeling studies. We used the individual-based gap model, University of Virginia Forest Model Enhanced (UVAFME), to simulate forest dynamics over time at a high-elevation, subalpine forest (dominated by Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir) in southern Wyoming. Following model calibration, UVAFME was validated by running it up an elevation gradient to determine if it could simulate changes in species composition with elevation. UVAFME was then run exclusively at the high-elevation location for periods of 3000 years to simulate long-term forest dynamics at the site. It was found that without the intrusion of exogenous disturbances, the subalpine zone of the Rocky Mountains demonstrates cyclic phenomena, both at the plot scale and the landscape scale. By itself, Engelmann spruce demonstrates a natural periodicity of 300 years, whereas subalpine fir has a natural periodicity of 200 years. In the two-species forest, both species have a periodicity of 300 years. This output corresponds well with field data from similar high-elevation conifer sites. These results, along with other examples of cyclic phenomena in ecological systems, indicate that periodicities in ecosystems may be more common than previously thought, though they may be difficult to distinguish due to disturbances and the time- and space-scales at which they occur.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of stormwater and snowmelt runoff on the ELISA EQ PCDD/PCDF and triclosan concentrations in the small urban Sokołówka River (Central Poland). The obtained results demonstrate the decisive influence of hydrological conditions occurring in the river itself and its catchment on the quoted PCDD/PCDF ELISA EQ concentrations. The lowest PCDD/PCDF values of 87, 60 and 67 ng EQ L-1 in stormwater, the river and its reservoirs, respectively, were associated with the highest river flow of 0.02 m3 s-1 and high precipitation (11.2 mm) occurred five days before sampling. In turn, the highest values of 353, 567 and 343 ng EQ L-1 in stormwater, the river and its reservoirs, respectively, were observed during periods of intensive snow melting (stormwater samples) and spring rainfall preceded by a rainless phase (river and reservoir samples) followed by low and moderate river flows of 0.01 and 0.005 m3 s-1. An analogous situation was observed for triclosan, with higher ELISA EQ concentrations (444 to 499 ng EQ L-1) noted during moderate river flow and precipitation, and the lowest (232 to 288 ng EQ L-1) observed during high river flow and high precipitation preceded by violent storms. Stormwater was also found to influence PCDD/PCDF EQ concentrations of the river and reservoirs, however only during high and moderate flow, and no such effect was observed for triclosan. The study clearly demonstrates that to mitigate the high peaks of the studied pollutants associated with river hydrology, the increased in-site stormwater infiltration and purification, the development of buffering zones along river course and the systematic maintenance of reservoirs to avoid the accumulation of the studied micropollutants and their subsequent release after heavy rainfall are required.  相似文献

Many species and clones of Daphnia inhabit ecosystems with permanent algal blooms, and they can develop tolerance to cyanobacterial toxins. In the current study, we examined the spatial differences in the response of Daphnia longispina to the toxic Microcystis aeruginosa in a lowland eutrophic dam reservoir between June (before blooms) and September (during blooms). The reservoir showed a distinct spatial pattern in cyanobacteria abundance resulting from the wind direction: the station closest to the dam was characterised by persistently high Microcystis biomass, whereas the upstream stations had a significantly lower biomass of Microcystis. Microcystin concentrations were closely correlated with the cyanobacteria abundance (r = 0.93). The density of daphniids did not differ among the stations. The main objective of this study was to investigate how the distribution of toxic Microcystis blooms affects the antioxidant system of Daphnia. We examined catalase (CAT) activity, the level of the low molecular weight antioxidant glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and oxidative stress parameters, such as lipid peroxidation (LPO). We found that the higher the abundance (and toxicity) of the cyanobacteria, the lower the values of the antioxidant parameters. The CAT activity and LPO level were always significantly lower at the station with the highest M. aeruginosa biomass, which indicated the low oxidative stress of D. longispina at the site with the potentially high toxic thread. However, the low concentration of GSH and the highest activity of GST indicated the occurrence of detoxification processes at this site. These results demonstrate that daphniids that have coexisted with a high biomass of toxic cyanobacteria have effective mechanisms that protect them against the toxic effects of microcystins. We also conclude that Daphnia''s resistance capacity to Microcystis toxins may differ within an ecosystem, depending on the bloom''s spatial distribution.  相似文献

The phosphopantetheinyl transferase genes SCO5883 (redU) and SCO6673 were disrupted in Streptomyces coelicolor. The redU mutants did not synthesize undecylprodigiosin, while SCO6673 mutants failed to produce calcium-dependent antibiotic. Antioxidant status was assayed in leaves of two local lesion hosts of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), namely in wild-type Xanthi-nc tobacco and in NahG transgenic tobacco, the latter of which is not able to accumulate salicylic acid (SA) and therefore is unable to develop systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Activities of several enzymes related to antioxidative defense, and the levels of glutathione, chlorogenic acid and rutin were studied. The majority of antioxidant enzymes were less active in uninfected NahG tobacco than in Xanthi-nc. Furthermore, important enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were down-regulated in TMV-infected NahG plants, as compared to Xanthi-nc. Correspondingly, SA pretreatment primed the leaves for stronger induction of antioxidants in infected Xanthi-nc, but not in NahG tobaccos. The antioxidant status of NahG tobacco even decreased after an attempted induction of SAR, while the antioxidative level increased in Xanthi-nc leaves in which the SAR was successfully induced. After infection, a greater accumulation of superoxide and H 2 O 2, and a more intensive necrotization was positively correlated with the reduced capability of NahG leaf tissue to detoxify reactive oxygen species.  相似文献

Development and sex differentiation in the copepod Temora stylifera was studied in the presence of maternal and larval diets of the diatoms Thalassiosira rotula and Skeletonema marinoi, either provided alone or supplemented with the control dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum. Both diatoms had deleterious effects on growth compared to the control when used as pure diets, inducing very low or even zero survival from hatching to adulthood. This effect was deleted when the diet was supplemented with a good food (P. minimum) only in the case of T. rotula. By contrast, with a maternal or larval diet of S. marinoi, nauplii did not pass metamorphosis even when this alga was mixed with P. minimum. Arrested development was not due to lack of feeding since early and late nauplii (NII and NV) ingested all three algae at similar rates when used as single diets, and did not show any preference when the algae were offered as mixtures. Since mortality rates with a mixed diet of S. marinoi + P. minimum were similar or even higher than those obtained with a single diet of S. marinoi, we suggest that this diatom is more toxic than nutritionally deficient for T. stlyfera development. No males were produced in cohorts reared on pure diatom diets or with a mixture of S. marinoi + P. minimum, and intermediate male:female sex ratios were obtained with the mixed T. rotula + P. minimum diet. Possibly some diatoms produce compounds such as oxylipins or new molecules that alter sex differentiation in T. stylifera.  相似文献

The copepod Temora stylifera was fed with the pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima for 15 days. This diatom does not produce polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) but only synthesizes other oxylipins such as the hydroxyacid (5Z,8Z,11Z,13E,15S,17Z)-15-hydroxy-5,8,11,13,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (15S-HEPE). Effects of this monoalgal diet were compared to copepods fed with the PUA-producing diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the control dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum which does not produce any oxylipins. Both egg production and hatching success were negatively affected by the two diatoms compared to the control diet. Both diatoms also induced malformations in the offspring, with the number of malformed nauplii increasing dramatically with time. Malformed nauplii were apoptotic (TUNEL-positive) indicating imminent death. In terms of recruitment, only 4 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with S. marinoi and 9 healthy nauplii female−1 day−1 with P. delicatissima were produced during the 15-day experimental period. The results indicate that P. delicatissima induced negative effects comparable to those of S. marinoi even though it did not produce PUAs. This is the first study that tests the biological activity of oxylipins other than PUAs on copepod reproduction.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to understand: (1) how environmental conditions can contribute to formation of Microcystis-dominated blooms in lowland, dam reservoirs in temperate climate—with the use of quantitative molecular monitoring, and (2) what is the role of toxic Microcystis genotypes in the bloom functioning. Monitoring of the Sulejow Reservoir in 2009 and 2010 in two sites Tresta (TR) and Bronislawow BR), which have different morphometry, showed that physicochemical conditions were always favorable for cyanobacterial bloom formation. In 2009, the average biomass of cyanobacteria reached 13 mg L?1 (TR) and 8 mg L?1 (BR), and in the second year, it decreased to approximately 1 mg L?1 (TR and BR). In turns, the mean number of toxic Microcystis genotypes in the total Microcystis reached 1 % in 2009, both in TR and BR, and in 2010, the number increased to 70 % in TR and 14 % in BR. Despite significant differences in the biomass of cyanobacteria in 2009 and 2010, the mean microcystins (MCs) concentration and toxicity stayed at a similar level of approximately 1 μg L?1. Statistical analysis indicated that water retention time was a factor that provided a significant difference between the two monitoring seasons and was considered a driver of the changes occurring in the Sulejow Reservoir. Hydrologic differences, which occurred between two studied years due to heavy flooding in Poland in 2010, influenced the decrease in number of Microcystis biomass by causing water disturbances and by lowering water temperature. Statistical analysis showed that Microcystis aeruginosa biomass and 16S rRNA gene copy number representing Microcystis genotypes in both years of monitoring could be predicted on the basis of total and dissolved phosphorus concentrations and water temperature. In present study, the number of mcyA gene copies representing toxic Microcystis genotypes could be predicted based on the biomass of M. aeruginosa. Moreover, MCs toxicity and concentration could be predicted on the basic of mcyA gene copy number and M. aeruginosa (biomass, 16S rRNA), respectively. Present findings may indicate that Microcystis can regulate the number of toxic genotypes, and in this way adjust the whole bloom to be able to produce MCs at the level which is necessary for its maintenance in the Sulejow Reservoir under stressful hydrological conditions.  相似文献
