Cadmium Ion Biosorption by the Thermophilic Bacteria Geobacillus stearothermophilus and G. thermocatenulatus 下载免费PDF全文
This study reports surface complexation models (SCMs) for quantifying metal ion adsorption by thermophilic microorganisms. In initial cadmium ion toxicity tests, members of the genus Geobacillus displayed the highest tolerance to CdCl2 (as high as 400 to 3,200 μM). The thermophilic, gram-positive bacteria Geobacillus stearothermophilus and G. thermocatenulatus were selected for further electrophoretic mobility, potentiometric titration, and Cd2+ adsorption experiments to characterize Cd2+ complexation by functional groups within and on the cell wall. Distinct one-site SCMs described the extent of cadmium ion adsorption by both studied Geobacillus sp. strains over a range of pH values and metal/bacteria concentration ratios. The results indicate that a functional group with a deprotonation constant pK value of approximately 3.8 accounts for 66% and 80% of all titratable sites for G. thermocatenulatus and G. stearothermophilus, respectively, and is dominant in Cd2+ adsorption reactions. The results suggest a different type of functional group may be involved in cadmium biosorption for both thermophilic strains investigated here, compared to previous reports for mesophilic bacteria. 相似文献

Peptide YY (PYY) and enteroglucagon are produced by endocrine cells of the colonic mucosa. PYY inhibits upper gastrointestinal motility, and enteroglucagon is trophic for small bowel mucosa. Adaptive increase in the production and release of these peptides may improve functional results after colorectal resections. We hypothesized that if segments of the colon were resected, then production and release of PYY and enteroglucagon would increase in the remaining segments of bowel. Animals which underwent colonic transections and partial resections had transient elevations of PYY up to 250 +/- 80 pmol/L, which dropped to control group levels in the second week following surgery. Rats with an abdominal colectomy had significantly greater PYY levels than all other groups from the third (208 +/- 30 pmol/L) to the thirty-eighth (100 +/- 16 pmol/L) week of the study. Circulating levels of enteroglucagon were elevated to 156 +/- 35 pmol/L in rats with a right hemicolectomy during the first week following surgery. Enteroglucagon levels did not significantly vary in the other groups studied. Both tissue PYY (413 +/- 33 pmol/gram) and tissue enteroglucagon (171 +/- 17 pmol/gram) were significantly elevated in the rectums of the rats with an abdominal colectomy, as compared to all other groups. The elevated tissue levels may thus account for the ability to maintain elevated plasma PYY. Double immunogold labeling of endocrine cells in the colorectal tissue for PYY and enteroglucagon revealed both peptides within the same endocrine cells and secretory granules. These studies support the hypothesis that circulating levels of PYY are elevated after major colonic resections and suggest that L-type endocrine cells may participate in adaptive responses which improve intestinal function following colonic surgery. 相似文献

It is commonly accepted that vertical jump performance is a good indicator of maximal joint power. Some studies, however, have indicated that knee joint power output in the vertical jump is limited due to forward trunk inclination early in the push-off. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of forward trunk inclination on joint power output in vertical jumping. A group of 20 male subjects performed maximal vertical countermovement jumps from stance while minimizing the contribution of arm swing by holding their hands on their hips (arms akimbo). They also performed maximal jumps while holding the trunk as upright as possible throughout the jump, still holding the arms akimbo. Jump height, joint kinematics (angles), and joint kinetics (torque, power) were calculated. Jump height of vertical jumps while holding the trunk upright was 10% less than in normal jumps. Hip joint power was decreased by 37% while knee joint power was increased by 13%. Ankle joint power did not change. These results demonstrated that maximal jump performance does not necessarily represent maximal power of each individual joint. The implication is that jump performance may well be a good representation of overall joint power; it is, however, not an accurate measure to evaluate maximal individual joint power as part of contemporary training and rehabilitation methods. 相似文献

The distribution of molecular weights for polymeric colonic mucus glycoprotein or ``mucin' isolated and solubilised in the
presence of protease inhibitors from pig colons is shown to be considerably greater than its ``subunit' (thiol reduction
product) and papain digested forms using the technique of size-exclusion chromatography coupled to multi-angle laser light
scattering, and confirmed by sedimentation equilibrium measurements. The conformation of this mucin is probed by examining
the molecular weight – intrinsic viscosity relationship in terms of the Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada analysis for its polymeric
(or ``whole'), reduced and papain-digested forms: an exponent ``a' of (1.1±0.1) is obtained indicating a linear random coil conformation consistent with other mucins. Size-exclusion chromatography
coupled to multi-angle laser light scattering is shown to provide a relatively simple complementary technique to sedimentation
equilibrium for the molecular weight distribution analysis of polydisperse materials.

We report two unusual aetosaur scutes from the Tecovas Member of the Dockum Formation, Chinle Group (upper Carnian) of Crosby County, Texas, U.S.A. Originally collected by University of Michigan expeditions in the 1920’s, these scutes cannot be assigned with certainty to any known species of aetosaurs known from the American Southwest. One of these scutes may be a cervical horn ofParatypothorax, and if so confirms the similarities of this aetosaur toDesmatosuchus in the possession of horned lateral spikes. The other is a paramedian scute of a new aetosaur taxon inadequately known at present to be assigned a formal name. These scutes indicate that aetosaurs were more diverse in the Chinle Group than currently known, but do not alter the robust Late Triassic biochronology based on aetosaurs. 相似文献
