There is little strong evidence that currently recommended higher waist circumference cut‐points for Europids compared with South Asians are associated with similar risk for type 2 diabetes. This study was designed to provide such evidence. Longitudinal studies over 5 years were conducted among 5,515 Europid and 2,214 ethnically South Asian participants. Age‐standardized diabetes incidence at different levels of waist circumference and incidence difference relative to a reference value were calculated. The Youden Index was used to determine waist circumference cut‐points. At currently recommended cut‐points, estimated annual diabetes incidence for a 50‐year‐old Europid was <0.6% for both sexes, and for a 50‐year‐old South Asian, 5.8% for men and 2.1% for women. Annual diabetes incidence of 1% was observed for a 50 year old at a waist circumference 35–40 cm greater in Europid compared to South Asian men and women. Incidence difference between recommended cut‐points and a reference value (80 cm in men, 70 cm in women) was 0.3 and 4.4% per year for Europid and South Asian men, and 0.2 and 0.8% per year for Europid and South Asian women, respectively. Waist circumference cut‐points chosen using the Youden Index were shown to be dependent on obesity levels in the population. The much higher observed risk of diabetes in South Asians compared to Europids at the respective recommended waist circumference cut‐points suggests that differences between them should be greater. Background
Learning and perception of visual stimuli by free-flying honeybees has been shown to vary dramatically depending on the way insects are trained. Fine color discrimination is achieved when both a target and a distractor are present during training (differential conditioning), whilst if the same target is learnt in isolation (absolute conditioning), discrimination is coarse and limited to perceptually dissimilar alternatives. Another way to potentially enhance discrimination is to increase the penalty associated with the distractor. Here we studied whether coupling the distractor with a highly concentrated quinine solution improves color discrimination of both similar and dissimilar colors by free-flying honeybees. As we assumed that quinine acts as an aversive stimulus, we analyzed whether aversion, if any, is based on an aversive sensory input at the gustatory level or on a post-ingestional malaise following quinine feeding.Methodology/Principal Findings
We show that the presence of a highly concentrated quinine solution (60 mM) acts as an aversive reinforcer promoting rejection of the target associated with it, and improving discrimination of perceptually similar stimuli but not of dissimilar stimuli. Free-flying bees did not use remote cues to detect the presence of quinine solution; the aversive effect exerted by this substance was mediated via a gustatory input, i.e. via a distasteful sensory experience, rather than via a post-ingestional malaise.Conclusion
The present study supports the hypothesis that aversion conditioning is important for understanding how and what animals perceive and learn. By using this form of conditioning coupled with appetitive conditioning in the framework of a differential conditioning procedure, it is possible to uncover discrimination capabilities that may remain otherwise unsuspected. A phylogenetic analysis of Polycladida based on two partial mitochondrial genes (cox1 and 16S) is provided. The analysis includes 30 polyclad terminals that represent species from the two taxa which traditionally divide the groups Cotylea and Acotylea. Our phylogenetic analyses produced a well-supported hypothesis that confirms the monophyly of Polycladida, as well as Acotylea and Cotylea. Within Acotylea, there are two lineages not highly supported: on one hand, Leptoplanoidea (excluding Hoploplana elisabelloi) and one Stylochoidea member (Pseudostylochus intermedius) (classification sensu Faubel, 1983, 1984), and on the other hand, Stylochoidea members together with Discocelis tigrina and H. elisabelloi. The genera Stylochus and Imogine are not monophyletic. Within Cotylea, Pseudocerotidae and Euryleptidae are monophyletic, though not highly supported, while Prosthiostomidae is not. Euryleptoidea is paraphyletic. The genera Pseudobiceros and Pseudoceros are monophyletic and highly supported. Our results suggest that, within Acotylea, the prostatoid organs of Discocelis may have been derived from a prostatic vesicle. The genus Hoploplana could be included in Stylochoidea. Within Cotylea, the common ancestor of Euryleptidae and Pseudocerotidae might have been an aposematic animal with tentacles. 相似文献

Herein, we conducted a study toward understanding the impact of composting of the diesel-contaminated soil with some locally available bulking agents (rice husks (RHs), sawdust (SD), and wood chips (WCs)). In order to ascertain the effectiveness of petroleum degradation by the process assayed, we compared the protocols with monitored natural attenuation (MNA). The overall degradation pattern was modeled with non-linear regression by comparing the experimental data with first and second-order kinetic equations. At the end of the six-week study, the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon removed from contaminated soil was 98.26 ± 1.33% (amendment with SD + RHs + WCs), 96.89 ± 1.20 (RHs amendment), 96.55 ± 1.29% (amendment with SD), 90.01 ± 0.22% (WCs amendment), and 85.02 ± 0.21% (MNA). The degradation of TPH trends followed a second-order kinetic model for all the four compost treatments while the MNA was found to follow a first-order (slower) degradation pattern. In general, the results of the parameter estimate showed that amendment with mixture of the three bulking agents was 1.08 (8%) slower (k2 = (1.289 ± 0.16) × 10?5 (g mg?1 d?1), r2 = 0.991) than SD amendment alone (k2 = (1.392 ± 0.14) × 10?5 (g mg?1 d?1), r2 = 0.995). However, the mixture of the bulking agents was found to be 1.67, 1.41, and 2.4 times faster than amendments with WCs, rice, and MNA, respectively. The phytotoxicity test revealed that all the compost treatments except WCs resulted in germination index of ≥80% after six weeks of bioremediation tests. The outcome of the current investigation confirms the effectiveness of bulking agents (especially when combined) in the supply of nutrients for the bioremediation of diesel-impacted soil. 相似文献
