First record ofPolycheles typhlops (Decapoda reptantia) in Icelandic waters
During the ICNAF NORWESTLANT SURVEY 2, June 1963, two femalePolycheles typhlops Heller 1862, 10 and 12 cm long respectively, were caught with an otter trawl off the southwest coast of Iceland at a depht of 450 m. Up to now this species has only been known to inhabit the abyssal regions in the moderate and warm areas of the Atlantic Ocean (including the Mediterranean) and the Indian Ocean. Our specimens are the first of this species to be found in boreal waters; its distribution seems therefore to be wider than hitherto assumed. Since juvenile stages, previously described as a distinct crustacean species,Eryoneicus puritani, are occasionally found in plankton catches of the central North Atlantic, there is no doubt that this species is native to these waters and does not occure by chance in this area. A list of previous records of its occurrence, probably not complete, is given in Table 1.

Summary The intracellular electrolyte concentrations in the isolated cornea of the American bullfrog were determined in thin freeze-dried cryosections using energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Stimulation of Cl secretion by isoproterenol resulted in a significant increase in the intracellular Na concentration but did not change the intracellular Cl concentration. Similar results were obtained when Cl secretion was stimulated by the Ca ionophore A23187. Inhibition of Cl secretion by ouabain produced a large increase in the intracellular Na concentration and an equivalent fall in the K concentration. Again, no increase or decrease in the intracellular Cl concentration was detectable. Clamping of the transepithelial potential to ±50 mV resulted in parallel changes in the transepithelial current and intracellular Na concentration, but, with the exception of the outermost cell layer, in no changes of the Cl concentration. Only when Cl secretion was inhibited by bumetanide or furosemide, together with a decrease in the Na concentration, was a large fall in the Cl concentration observed. Application of loop diuretics also produced significant increases in the P concentration and dry weight, consistent with some shrinkage of the epithelial cells. The results suggest the existence of a potent regulatory mechanism which maintains a constant intracellular Cl concentration and, thereby, a constant epithelial cell volume. Through the operation of this system any variation in the apical Cl efflux is compensated for by an equal change in the rate of Cl uptake across the basolateral membrane. Cl uptake is sensitive to loop diuretics, directly coupled to an uptake of Na, and dependent on the Na and K concentration gradients across the basolateral membrane. Isoproterenol and A23187 seem to increase the Cl permeability of the apical membrane and thus stimulate Cl efflux. Ouabain inhibits Cl secretion by abolishing the driving Na concentration gradient for Cl uptake across the basolateral membrane.  相似文献

Human interferon omega 1 (IFN-omega 1 = IFN-alpha II1) is a recently discovered protein structurally related to IFN-alpha and -beta; the biological activities of IFN-omega 1 and its physiological role are not known to date. We have purified IFN-omega 1 from preparations of human leukocyte IFN, derived from peripheral blood leukocytes induced with Sendai virus, by two sequential cycles of monoclonal antibody affinity chromatography. The resulting protein was at least 95% pure as determined by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography and showed an Mr of 24,500 upon sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis (theoretical Mr, 19,984). Amino acid sequence analysis revealed that only about 40% of the molecules have the NH2 terminus expected on the basis of the sequence similarity to IFN-alpha, whereas the others contain two additional amino acids. This difference probably results from variable cleavage of the pre-protein by the signal peptidase. No evidence for COOH-terminal heterogeneity was found. Essentially all IFN-omega 1 molecules are glycosylated; enzymatic deglycosylation resulted in a reduction of the Mr to 20,500. Experiments using several plant lectins indicated the presence of biantennary complex oligosaccharides containing neuraminic acid. Two major peaks were observed upon chromatofocusing, with isoelectric points of 8.1 and 8.5. The specific antiviral activity of purified IFN-omega 1 assayed on human cells was determined to be 2.7 x 10(8) IU/mg, similar to that of other human class I IFNs; potent antiviral activity was also observed on cells of bovine and ovine but not of equine or murine origin.  相似文献

N-Acetylaspartic and N-acetylaspartylglutamic acid concentrations in human ventricular, subarachnoid and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid were measured by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using selected ion monitoring with deuterated internal standards. N-Acetylaspartate concentrations were in the range 55, 9, and 1 M, respectively; N-acetylaspartylglutamate concentrations in the same fluids were in the range 8, 3 and 4 M, respectively. There did not appear to be any difference in lumbar fluid concentrations of either compound between control subjects, schizophrenic patients, Alzheimer's disease patients and a pooled group of patients with neurological degeneration. Ventricular concentrations of both compounds were greatly increased in deceased patients suggesting that maintenance of their intracellular concentrations is probably energy dependent. The concentrations of these compounds in lumbar cerebrospinal fluid from living, and ventricular cerebrospinal fluid from deceased subjects were weakly correlated with one another. In lumbar fluid neither compound appeared to be correlated with age. Analysis of serially collected lumbar samples from two subjects showed a weak concentration gradient for both compounds. Neither antipsychotic medication nor the acid transport inhibitor probenecid had any effect on lumbar concentrations of either compound. Attempts to use anion exchange high pressure liquid chromatography with UV detection for measurement of the low concentrations of N-acetylaspartate found in cerebrospinal fluid from living subjects were unsuccessful.  相似文献

Acquisition of new learning is challenged by the phenomenon of proactive interference (PI), which occurs when previous learning disrupts later learning. Whereas human neuroimaging studies have focused on the cortical contributions to interference resolution, animal studies demonstrate that efficient resolution of PI depends on cholinergic modulation from basal forebrain (BF). Whether the BF promotes PI resolution in humans is unknown. Here, we adapted a PI paradigm from animal studies for use in a functional MRI experiment. During PI resolution, neurologically intact subjects recruited a BF network that included afferent anterior and posterior cortical sites associated with efficient memory acquisition and perceptual processing. Despite normal performance, nonamnesic patients with alcoholism, which is known to disrupt BF function, did not activate a BF network but instead invoked anterior cortical sites traditionally associated with executive function. These results provide evidence for parallel neural systems, each with the potential to resolve interference in the face of competing information.  相似文献

The presence of the cyanogenic glycoside prunasin in leaves and fruits of Cotoneaster species was confirmed by GLC. In addition amygdalin was found in ripe fruits. The variation in prunasin and amygdalin was measured during development of the flowers and fruits of C. praecox and C. bullata.
