The daily number of IV instar larva of Culex quinquefasciatus killed, rate of pupation and adult emergence was noted in presence of the predatory water bug Sphaerodema annulatum for a period of seven consecutive days, experimentally, in the laboratory. The rate of IV instar larva killed by the water bugs on an average was 65.17 per day. The rate of pupation ranged between 7.6 and 48 in control while in presence of water bugs it ranged between 6 and 35. The rate of adult emergence in control experiments varied between 1.4 and 4.8 per day, which was reduced to only 0.4-28.8 per day in case of the water bugs. The results clearly indicate that the water bugs on its way of predation reduces the rate of pupation and adult emergence of Cx. quinquefasciatus significantly which calls for an extensive field trials.  相似文献

The sewage snail Physa acuta is a serious threat to certain economic plants and to the purification plant of sewage works by rendering the biofilters ineffective. Various attempts are being made to control it. The efficacy of the predacious water bugs Sphaerodema rusticum was judged experimentally, in the laboratory in the potential control of P. acuta. Biochemical signaling networks decode temporal patterns of synaptic input   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Synapses exhibit a wide repertoire of responses to different temporal patterns of synaptic input. Many of these responses are expressed as short and long-term changes in synaptic strength. Electrical properties of channels and calcium buildup can account for rapid aspects of pattern decoding, but it is not clear how more complex input patterns, especially those lasting over many minutes, could be discriminated. This paper shows that a network of signaling pathways can discriminate between complex input patterns lasting tens of minutes, and can give rise to distinct combinatorial patterns of biochemical signaling activity in pathways involved in synaptic change. Regulatory signaling input can alter and even reverse the strengths of responses to input patterns. Thus the synaptic signaling network may function as a temporal decoder that transforms patterns from the time domain into the domain of chemical signaling. Grass pollen-induced hay-fever and allergic asthma represent a major health problem in industrialized countries. Whereas the symptoms of these allergic conditions can be controlled by pharmacotherapy, specific immunotherapy vaccination is the only causative approach towards the treatment of these type 1 allergies. Specific immunotherapy is based on administration of increasing amounts of the disease-causing allergens in the form of allergen-containing extracts. However, the extracts used for immunotherapy consist of allergenic and non-allergenic components and may induce severe anaphylactic side-effects upon therapeutic administration. With recent developments in molecular biology of pollen allergens it has become feasible to produce modified hypoallergenic derivatives of recombinant allergens with abrogated or greatly reduced likelihood of anaphylactic side-effects as compared to extract-based treatments. We have demonstrated this concept through reducing the anaphylactic potential of major rye grass pollen allergens by introducing a few point mutations which leave the overall structural fold of the molecule unaltered. These modified forms are expected to make allergen-specific immunotherapy more widely used in the future.  相似文献

A standardized protocol was developed for the isolation of protoplasts from salt stressed primary, secondary and tertiary calli of the moderately salt tolerant indica rice land race Binnatoa. Calli were induced from mature seeds using MS2 callus induction media supplemented with 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. Subsequently cultures were maintained in the same medium for 1–2 passages with or without salt stress at the same concentrations. Large numbers of protoplasts (about 1.57–2.10×105/ml) with high viability were isolated from both control and salt stressed (50 and 100 mM NaCl) secondary and tertiary calli compared with the primary calli. The mannitol concentraion in the isolation and washing media was gradually increased, based on salt concentrations in which 13–15% was the most compatible for the control and 50 mM NaCl stressed calli and 17% for the 100 mM NaCl stressed calli. Isolated protoplasts at a density of 1–1.5×105/ml were cultured in MS115 medium by liquid culture or agarose droplets. The first division of protoplasts was observed 4–5 days after culture using either method. The agarose droplet method led to sustained division of protoplasts and microcolonies formed within 2 weeks. Although no microcalli or protocalli were observed the procedure described provides a method for the isolation of salt-stressed protoplasts in indica rice which avoids the need for laborious and time-consuming suspension cultures. Subsequent regeneration from calli, derived from these protoplasts is reported in a further publication.  相似文献

Nucleotide excision repair (NER), a highly versatile DNA repair mechanism, is capable of removing various types of DNA damage including those induced by UV radiation and chemical mutagens. NER has been well characterized in yeast and mammalian systems but its presence in plants has not been reported. Here it is reported that a plant gene isolated from male germline cells of lily (Lilium longiflorum) shows a striking amino acid sequence similarity to the DNA excision repair proteins human ERCC1 and yeast RAD10. Homologous genes are also shown to be present in a number of taxonomically diverse plant genera tested, suggesting that this gene may have a conserved function in plants. The protein encoded by this gene is able to correct significantly the sensitivity to the cross-linking agent mitomycin C in ERCC1-deficient Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. These findings suggest that the NER mechanism is conserved in yeast, animals and higher plants.  相似文献

Introduction

Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) strategies include combined short-course antiretrovirals during pregnancy (Option A), triple-drug antiretroviral treament (ART) during pregnancy and breastfeeding (Option B), or lifelong ART (Option B+). The WHO also recommends ART for HIV treatment and prevention of sexual transmission of HIV. The impact of PMTCT strategies on prevention of sexual HIV transmission of HIV is not known. We estimated the population-level impact of PMTCT interventions on heterosexual HIV transmission in southwestern Uganda and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, two regions with different HIV prevalence and fertility rates.

Materials and Methods

We constructed and validated dynamic, stochastic, network-based HIV transmission models for each region. PMTCT Options A, B, and B+ were simulated over ten years under three scenarios: 1) current ART and PMTCT coverage, 2) current ART and high PMTCT coverage, and 3) high ART and PMTCT coverage. We compared adult HIV incidence after ten years of each intervention to Option A (and current ART) at current coverage.

Results

At current coverage, Options B and B+ reduced heterosexual HIV incidence by about 5% and 15%, respectively, in both countries. With current ART and high PMTCT coverage, Option B+ reduced HIV incidence by 35% in Uganda and 19% in South Africa, while Option B had smaller, but meaningful, reductions. The greatest reductions in HIV incidence were achieved with high ART and PMTCT coverage. In this scenario, all PMTCT strategies yielded similar results.

Discussion

Implementation of Options B/B+ reduces adult HIV incidence, with greater effect (relative to Option A at current levels) in Uganda than South Africa. These results are likely driven by Uganda’s higher fertility rates.  相似文献

In Caenorhabditis elegans, germline apoptosis is promoted by egl-1 and ced-13 in response to meiotic checkpoint activation. We report that the requirement for these two factors depends on which checkpoints are active. We also identify a regulatory region of egl-1 required to inhibit germline apoptosis in response to DNA damage incurred during meiotic recombination.  相似文献
