Fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus were used to evaluate the effect of dietary fumonisin B1 (FB1), a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium verticillioides, on growth, haematological and serum biochemical parameters. The fingerlings were sorted, weighed and randomly stocked in 16 plastic tanks at the rate of 20 fingerlings per tank. Fusarium-cultured maize grains containing FB1 were used to formulate three diets containing approximately 5.0, 10.0 and 15.0 mg FB1/kg, constituting diets 2, 3, and 4 respectively. These three diets, plus diet 1, which contained non-Fusarium cultured maize grains that served as the control, were used in a 6-week feeding trial. The final weight gains by the fingerlings were significantly (P?<?0.05) influenced by FB1. The final weights of the fingerlings fed diets 2, 3 and 4 ranged from 70.07 to 87.10% of the controls. The haematocrit, erythrocytes, haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and the serum protein constituents (total protein, albumin and globulin) values significantly (P?<?0.05) decreased, while the leucocytes, MCV and MCH increased significantly (P?<?0.05) with increase in the dietary FB1. The total serum protein values of the fingerlings fed diets 2, 3 and 4 were 34.53, 39.42 and 50.17% lower than the total serum protein values of those fed the control diet. These results indicate that Fusarium-contaminated diets containing about 5.0 mg or more FB1/kg reduced weight gain and significantly altered haematological parameters and serum protein constituents in the fingerlings. These may have a significant impact on physiological activities and may be vital in immunosuppression in the fingerlings with a strong negative impact on subsequent performance of the fish.  相似文献

Deregulation of the normal cellular apoptotic function is a fundamental element in the etiology of most cancers and the anti-apoptotic B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL?2) protein family is known to play crucial role in the regulation of this function. Overexpression of this protein family has been implicated in some cancers, such that agents that could inhibit their over-activity are now being explored for anticancer drug development. A number of studies have revealed the anticancer potential of Morinda lucida-derived extracts and compounds. In search of more inhibitors of this anti-apoptotic protein family from plant resources, 47 compounds, identified in Morinda lucida Benth (Rubiaceae) were screened for their inhibitory activities against BCL-XL, BCL-2, and MCL-1 by molecular docking using BINDSURF, while binding interactions of the top compounds were viewed with PyMOL. Druglikeness and Absorption–Distribution–Metabolism–Excretion (ADME) parameters of the top 6 compounds from docking study were evaluated using SuperPred webserver. Results revealed that out of the 47 compounds, 2 triterpenes (ursolic acid and oleanolic acid) and 4 phytosterols (cycloartenol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol) have higher binding affinities for the selected BCL-2 proteins, compared to known standard inhibitors; these compounds also fulfill oral drugability of Lipinski rule of five. Therefore, since these Morinda lucida-derived phytosterols and triterpenes show high binding affinity toward the selected anti-apoptotic proteins and exhibited good drugability characteristics, they qualify for further study on drug development against cancers characterized by overexpression of this family of protein.  相似文献

Background

In recent years a number of algorithms for cardiovascular risk assessment has been proposed to the medical community. These algorithms consider a number of variables and express their results as the percentage risk of developing a major fatal or non-fatal cardiovascular event in the following 10 to 20 years

Discussion

The author has identified three major pitfalls of these algorithms, linked to the limitation of the classical statistical approach in dealing with this kind of non linear and complex information. The pitfalls are the inability to capture the disease complexity, the inability to capture process dynamics, and the wide confidence interval of individual risk assessment. Artificial Intelligence tools can provide potential advantage in trying to overcome these limitations. The theoretical background and some application examples related to artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic have been reviewed and discussed.

Summary

The use of predictive algorithms to assess individual absolute risk of cardiovascular future events is currently hampered by methodological and mathematical flaws. The use of newer approaches, such as fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks, linked to artificial intelligence, seems to better address both the challenge of increasing complexity resulting from a correlation between predisposing factors, data on the occurrence of cardiovascular events, and the prediction of future events on an individual level.  相似文献

Questions

Soil resource heterogeneity influences the outcome of plant–plant interactions and, consequently, species co-existence and diversity patterns. The magnitude and direction of heterogeneity effects vary widely, and the processes underlying such variations are not fully understood. In this study, we explored how and under what resource conditions small-scale heterogeneity modulates grassland plant diversity.

Location

Oderhänge Mallnow, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany.

Methods

We expanded the individual-based plant community model (IBC-grass) to incorporate dynamic below-ground resource maps, simulating spatial heterogeneity of resource availability. Empirical centimeter-scale data of soil C/N ratio were integrated into the model, accounting for both configurational and compositional heterogeneity. We then analyzed the interplay between small-scale heterogeneity and resource availability on the interaction and co-existence of plant species and overall diversity.

Results

Our results showed significant differences between the low- and high-resource scenarios, with both configurational and compositional heterogeneity having a positive effect on species richness and Simpson's diversity, but only under low-resource conditions. As compositional heterogeneity in the fine-scale C/N ratio increased, we observed a positive shift in Simpson's diversity and species richness, with the highest effects at the highest level of variability tested. We observed little to no effect in nutrient-rich scenarios, and a shift to negative effects at the intermediate resource level. The study demonstrates that site-specific resource levels underpin how fine-scale heterogeneity influences plant diversity and species co-existence, and partly explains the divergent effects recorded in different empirical studies.

Conclusions

This study provides mechanistic insights into the complex relationship between resource heterogeneity and diversity patterns. It highlights the context-dependent effects of small-scale heterogeneity, which can be positive under low-resource, neutral under high-resource, and negative under intermediate-resource conditions. These findings provide a foundation for future investigations into small-scale heterogeneity–diversity relationships, contributing to a deeper understanding of the processes that promote species co-existence in plant communities.  相似文献
