Ecologists have long sought to understand the relationships among species diversity, community productivity and invasion by non‐native species. Here, four long‐term observational datasets were analyzed using repeated measures statistics to determine how plant species richness and community resource capture (i.e. productivity) influenced invasion. Multiple factors influenced the results, including the metric used to quantify invasion, interannual variation and spatial scale. Native richness was positively correlated with non‐native richness, but was usually negatively correlated with non‐native abundance, and these patterns were stronger at the larger spatial scale. Logistic regressions indicated that the probability of invasion was reduced both within and following years with high productivity, except at the desert grassland site where high productivity was associated with increased invasion. Our analysis suggests that while non‐natives were most likely to establish in species rich communities, their success was diminished by high resource capture by the resident community.  相似文献

Determination of reliable bioindicators of diabetes-induced oxidative stress and the role of dietary vitamin E supplementation were investigated. Blood (plasma) chemistries, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured over 12 weeks in New Zealand White rabbits (control, diabetic, and diabetic + vitamin E). Cholesterol and triglyceride levels did not correlate with diabetic state. PlasmaLPOwas influenced by diabetes and positively correlated with glucose concentration only, not cholesterol or triglycerides. Liver glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity negatively correlated with glucose and triglyceride levels. Plasma and erythrocyte GPX activities positively correlated with glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. Liver superoxide dismutase activity positively correlated with glucose and cholesterol concentration. Vitamin E reduced plasma LPO, but did not affect the diabetic state. Thus, plasmaLPOwas the most reliable indicator of diabetes-induced oxidative stress. Antioxidant enzyme activities and types of reactive oxygen species generated were tissue dependent. Diabetes-induced oxidative stress is diminished by vitamin E supplementation.  相似文献

Laryngeal adductor responses (LAR) close the airway in response to stimulation of peripheral afferents in the superior laryngeal nerve. Although both mucosal afferents and proprioceptive receptors are present in the larynx, their relative contribution for reflex elicitation is unknown. Our purpose was to determine which receptor types are of importance in eliciting the LAR. A servomotor with displacement feedback was used to deliver punctate displacements to the body of the arytenoid cartilage and overlying mucosa on each side of the larynx in eight anesthetized cats. The same displacements were delivered both before and after surgical excision of the overlying mucosa. With the mucosa intact, early short-latency component R1 LAR responses recorded from the thyroarytenoid muscles were frequent (ipsilateral > 92%, contralateral > 95%). After the mucosa was removed, the LAR became infrequent (<3%) and was reduced in amplitude in both the ipsilateral and contralateral thyroarytenoid muscle recording sites (P < 0.0005). These findings demonstrate that mucosal mechanoreceptors and not proprioceptive afferents contribute to the elicitation of LAR responses in the cat.  相似文献

Grooming is a fundamental component of sociality in many gregarious animal species, and elucidating the costs and benefits of this behaviour is crucial for understanding its function. There is evidence that animals giving grooming pay a cost in terms of the time and energy they invest, while recipients benefit not just from the removal of dirt and parasites, but also from the relaxing effects of being groomed. Recently, however, studies of primates have indicated that giving grooming may also provide such hedonic benefits, reducing levels of stress or anxiety in the groomer. In this study of free‐ranging adult female Barbary macaques at Trentham Monkey Forest (Stoke‐on‐Trent, UK), we tested the hypothesis that grooming reduces anxiety in the donor and/or the recipient. During focal follows, we quantified females' rates of self‐scratching as a behavioural index of their anxiety levels. Self‐scratching rates in the 2‐min periods after bouts of grooming (given, received and reciprocated) were compared to overall mean self‐scratching rates; we predicted that if grooming reduces anxiety, self‐scratching rates would be significantly lower after grooming bouts than mean levels. We first analysed all grooming bouts and then analysed separately grooming bouts with adult males, with all adult females, with subordinate adult females and with dominant adult females. Contrary to our prediction, self‐scratching rates were never seen to be lower after grooming than mean levels. In fact, for the majority of grooming partner–direction combinations, we found significantly higher rates of self‐scratching after grooming compared to mean levels. The hypothesis that grooming reduces anxiety was therefore not supported. Grooming seems in some cases to increase, not alleviate, anxiety. We explore possible explanations for these unexpected results.  相似文献

Naegleria isolates which are currently placed in the type species N. gruberi display great genetic, physiological and morphological heterogeneity. There are two possible interpretations of the nature of this species--that N. gruberi is a species complex or that it is a single continuously variable species. To distinguish between these alternatives, allelic states were determined for 33 loci in 74 new isolates selected to represent wide geographic sources and diverse temperature limits for growth. The results were compared with data for culture collection strains of N. gruberi and other species in the genus. The isolates formed a discontinuous series of clusters, separated by genetic distances similar to those separating the better-characterised taxa N. fowleri, N. lovaniensis, N. jadini, N. australiensis australiensis and N. australiensis italica. Culture collection strains assigned to N. gruberi fell into six distinct clusters, while other clusters were not represented by reference strains. The data are most consistent with the interpretation that N. gruberi is a group of several distinct species, each equivalent to the recently described species in the genus. Naegleria andersoni andersoni and N. andersoni jamiesoni also formed two distinct clusters, equivalent to species. Characteristics temperature limits for growth show that the mesophilic species are ecological as well as genetic entities.  相似文献

This study examined the effectiveness of a wetland system for phytoremediation of biosolids from an end-of-life municipal lagoon. The microcosm experiment tested the effects of one vs. two harvests of cattail per growth cycle in biosolids without (PB) or with (PBS) the addition of soil on phytoremediation. Cattail (Typha latifolia) seedlings were transplanted into pots containing 4.5 kg (dry wt.) of biosolids, above which a 10-cm deep water column was maintained. Results showed that two harvests per growth cycle significantly increased N and P phytoextraction relative to a single harvest. Overall, the three cycles of cattail removed ~3.7% of N which was originally present in the biosolids and ~2% of the total P content. Phytoextraction rates are expected to be higher under field conditions where biomass yields are much higher than those obtained under growth room conditions in this study. These results indicate that wetland-based phytoremediation can effectively clean up nutrients from biosolids, and therefore presents a potential alternative to the spreading of biosolids on agricultural land, which may not be readily available in some communities. Phytoextraction rates of trace elements, however, were much lower (0.02–0.17%). Nonetheless, trace element concentrations were not high enough to be of significant concern.  相似文献

Wheat breeders and academics alike use single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP s) as molecular markers to characterize regions of interest within the hexaploid wheat genome. A number of SNP ‐based genotyping platforms are available, and their utility depends upon factors such as the available technologies, number of data points required, budgets and the technical expertise required. Unfortunately, markers can rarely be exchanged between existing and newly developed platforms, meaning that previously generated data cannot be compared, or combined, with more recently generated data sets. We predict that genotyping by sequencing will become the predominant genotyping technology within the next 5–10 years. With this in mind, to ensure that data generated from current genotyping platforms continues to be of use, we have designed and utilized SNP ‐based capture probes from several thousand existing and publicly available probes from Axiom® and KASP ? genotyping platforms. We have validated our capture probes in a targeted genotyping by sequencing protocol using 31 previously genotyped UK elite hexaploid wheat accessions. Data comparisons between targeted genotyping by sequencing, Axiom® array genotyping and KASP ? genotyping assays, identified a set of 3256 probes which reliably bring together targeted genotyping by sequencing data with the previously available marker data set. As such, these probes are likely to be of considerable value to the wheat community.
