Tree species diversity, biovolume and forest stand structure were investigated in natural forest ecosystem located around some selected communities in the bitumen-producing area of Ondo state, Nigeria. Two forest reserves and four free areas distributed in 4 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state were selected for data collection, out of the total 6 LGAs in the bitumen belt of the state. The two forest reserves are Oluwa FR at Legge in Odigbo LGA and Eba Island FR in Ese-Odo LGA while the four free areas are located close to each of Omotoso community (Odigbo LGA), Ode-Aye community (Okitipupa), Igbo-Egunrin community (Ilaje) and Igbotako community (Okitipupa). Eight plots of equal size (20 × 20 m) were located in each of the selected location, using systematic line transect sampling design. In each plot, all living trees with dbh ≥ 10 cm were identified with their botanical names and their dbhs were also measured. The results of the study reveal that there were ninety nine (99) tropical hardwood timber species (range: 21 to 48 species per selected forest). These species were distributed among twenty nine (29) families. While Funtumia elastica has the highest population distribution across the selected communities’ forest, Euphorbiaceae was the dominant family in the entire area. Although there was a moderate variation in the biodiversity indices among the selected communities’ forest, the Shannon-Weiner diversity index of H1 = 4.02 and species evenness of E = 0.88 were obtained for the entire study area. Tree density summing up to 2,740 trees/6 ha varied moderately, with a range of 361–609 tree/ha, among the communities. Though most of the trees encountered belonged to the lowest diameter size class, the mean basal area and biovolume were 26.69 m2/ha and 262.36 m3/ha respectively. Recommendations guiding the decision on the allocation of the communities’ forest to the bitumen exploratory industries are made and the need for good forest management of the prospective area of bitumen exploration of Ondo state is emphasized. This is to prevent the imminent loss of biological diversity that would eventually accompany the exploration.  相似文献

Reaction of 5,6-dihydro-5,6-epoxy-1,10-phenanthroline (L) with Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O in methanol in 3:1 M ratio at room temperature yields light green [CuL3](ClO4)2·H2O (1). The X-ray crystal structure of the hemi acetonitrile solvate [CuL3](ClO4)2·0.5CH3CN has been determined which shows Jahn-Teller distortion in the CuN6 core present in the cation [CuL3]2+. Complex 1 gives an axial EPR spectrum in acetonitrile-toluene glass with g|| = 2.262 (A|| = 169 × 10−4 cm−1) and g = 2.069. The Cu(II/I) potential in 1 in CH2Cl2 at a glassy carbon electrode is 0.32 V versus NHE. This potential does not change with the addition of extra L in the medium implicating generation of a six-coordinate copper(I) species [CuL3]+ in solution. B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculations show that the six Cu-N bond distances in [CuL3]+ are 2.33, 2.25, 2.32, 2.25, 2.28 and 2.25 Å while the ideal Cu(I)-N bond length in a symmetric Cu(I)N6 moiety is estimated as 2.25 Å. Reaction of L with Cu(CH3CN)4ClO4 in dehydrated methanol at room temperature even in 4:1 M proportion yields [CuL2]ClO4 (2). Its 1H NMR spectrum indicates that the metal in [CuL2]+ is tetrahedral. The Cu(II/I) potential in 2 is found to be 0.68 V versus NHE in CH2Cl2 at a glassy carbon electrode. In presence of excess L, 2 yields the cyclic voltammogram of 1. From 1H NMR titration, the free energy of binding of L to [CuL2]+ to produce [CuL3]+ in CD2Cl2 at 298 K is estimated as −11.7 (±0.2) kJ mol−1.  相似文献

The mechanical vibration properties of single actin filaments from 50 to 288 nm are investigated by the molecular dynamics simulation in this study. The natural frequencies obtained from the molecular simulations agree with those obtained from the analytical solution of the equivalent Euler–Bernoulli beam model. Through the convergence study of the mechanical properties with respect to the filament length, it was found that the Euler–Bernoulli beam model can only be reliably used when the single actin filament is of the order of hundreds of nanometre scale. This molecular investigation not only provides the evidence for the use of the continuum beam model in characterising the mechanical properties of single actin filaments, but also clarifies the criteria for the effective use of the Euler–Bernoulli beam model.  相似文献

Caveolae are specialized domains of the vertebrate cell surface with a well-defined morphology and crucial roles in cell migration and mechanoprotection. Unique compositions of proteins and lipids determine membrane architectures. The precise caveolar lipid profile and the roles of the major caveolar structural proteins, caveolins and cavins, in selectively sorting lipids have not been defined. Here, we used quantitative nanoscale lipid mapping together with molecular dynamic simulations to define the caveolar lipid profile. We show that caveolin-1 (CAV1) and cavin1 individually sort distinct plasma membrane lipids. Intact caveolar structures composed of both CAV1 and cavin1 further generate a unique lipid nano-environment. The caveolar lipid sorting capability includes selectivities for lipid headgroups and acyl chains. Because lipid headgroup metabolism and acyl chain remodeling are tightly regulated, this selective lipid sorting may allow caveolae to act as transit hubs to direct communications among lipid metabolism, vesicular trafficking, and signaling.  相似文献

Lipid droplet (LD) is a vital organelle governing lipid homeostasis and Rab18 has been linked to lipid metabolism. However, the mechanisms of Rab18-mediated LD dynamics in myoblast cells remain elusive. Here, we report that Rab18 plays an important role in oleic acid (OA)-induced LD accumulation in mouse myoblast C2C12 cells. Rab18 was translocated from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to LDs during LD accumulation, which was regulated by perilipin 2 (PLIN2), a major LD protein. LD-associated Rab18 bound with the C terminus of PLIN2 and the LD localization of Rab18 was diminished when PLIN2 was depleted. Moreover, loss of function of Rab18 led to reduced triacylglycerol (TAG) level and fewer but larger LDs. In contrast, overexpression of Rab18 resulted in elevated TAG content and LD number. Furthermore, LD-associated Rab18 interacted with acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 3 (ACSL3), which in turn promoted the LD localization of this protein. These data show that Rab18 interacts with PLIN2 and forms a complex with PLIN2 and ACSL3, which plays a critical role in LD accumulation and dynamics of myoblast cells.  相似文献

Intestinal helminths and schistosomiasis among school children were investigated in an urban and some rural communities of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria. Fecal samples of 1,059 subjects (524 males, 535 females) aged 3-18 years were examined using direct smear and brine concentration methods between June 2005 and November 2006. The pooled prevalence of infection was 66.2%. Ascaris lumbricoides showed the highest prevalence (53.4%) (P < 0.001) followed by hookworms (17.8%), Trichuris trichiura (10.4%), Taenia sp. (9.6%), Schistosoma mansoni (2.3%), Strongyloides stercoralis (0.7%), Schistosoma haematobium (0.6%), and Enterobius vermicularis (0.3%). The prevalences of A. lumbricoides, hookworms, Taenia sp., S. mansoni, and S. stercoralis in the urban centre were similar (P > 0.05) to those in the rural communities. The fertile and infertile egg ratios of A. lumbricoides in the urban centre and the rural communities were 13: 1 and 3.7: 1, respectively. Each helminth had similar prevalences among both genders (P > 0.05). The prevalence of A. lumbricoides increased significantly with age (P < 0.001). The commonest double infections were Ascaris and hookworms, while the commonest triple infections were Ascaris, hookworms, and Trichuris. The study demonstrates the need for urgent intervention programmes against intestinal helminthiases and schistosomiasis in the study area.  相似文献

The efficiency of ready-to-use, source-separated, composted municipal organic wastes of Nigerian origin on degradation of soil total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soils polluted with petroleum products (crude oil, diesel, and spent engine oil) was assessed in screen house experiments. The effect of compost:soil ratios and combined effect of compost-phytoremediation technique were also studied. TPH was determined spectrophotometrically, after extraction with 1:1 acetone-dichloromethane mixture at 425 nm. Soil pH, electrical conductivity, and phytotoxicity to seed germination and growth of maize (Zea mays L.) served as risk assessments on soil quality and evidence of recovery for the oil-impacted soil. Results showed that the treatments increased soil pH and electrical conductivity but reduced TPH. Reductions in TPH by compost technology ranged from 40% to 75.87%. Toxicity to seed germination reduced from 100% to 16.12%. Positive correlations were obtained for plant agronomical parameters and growth period, for all treatments, with coefficients in the range of .905 to .996, p < .05. This study revealed that ready-to-use composted waste has the potential for bioremediation of soils polluted with petroleum and petroleum products. This study is a contribution to the data bank of relatively simple bioremediation methods, suitable for workers in the developing countries, where there is no easy access to high-technology facilities. However, further development of this technique to achieve zero residual TPH is recommended.  相似文献

Variants of different Class I alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) genes have been shown to be associated with an effect that is protective against alcoholism. Previous work from our laboratory has shown that the two sites showing the association are in linkage disequilibrium and has identified the ADH1B Arg47His site as causative, with the ADH1C Ile349Val site showing association only because of the disequilibrium. Here, we describe an initial study of the nature of linkage disequilibrium and genetic variation, in population samples from different regions of the world, in a larger segment of the ADH cluster (including the three Class I ADH genes and ADH7). Linkage disequilibrium across approximately 40 kb of the Class I ADH cluster is moderate to strong in all population samples that we studied. We observed nominally significant pairwise linkage disequilibrium, in some populations, between the ADH7 site and some Class I ADH sites, at moderate values and at a molecular distance as great as 100 kb. Our data indicate (1) that most ADH-alcoholism association studies have failed to consider many sites in the ADH cluster that may harbor etiologically significant alleles and (2) that the relevance of the various ADH sites will be population dependent. Some individual sites in the Class I ADH cluster show Fst values that are among the highest seen among several dozen unlinked sites that were studied in the same subset of populations. The high Fst values can be attributed to the discrepant frequencies of specific alleles in eastern Asia relative to those in other regions of the world. These alleles are part of a single haplotype that exists at high (>65%) frequency only in the eastern-Asian samples. It seems unlikely that this haplotype, which is rare or unobserved in other populations, reached such high frequency because of random genetic drift alone.  相似文献
