Exposure of plants to light intensities higher than those required to saturate photosynthesis leads to a reduction in photosynthetic capacity. This effect is known as photoinhibition. Photoinhibition is followed by destruction of carotenoids, bleaching of chlorophylls and increased lipid peroxidation due to damage by oxygen-derivatives. The oxygen concentration in chloroplasts in the light is high because of oxygen production by photosystem II (PSII). This can result in the release of reactive intermediates of reduced dioxygen such as superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide or singlet oxygen. In order to maintain their normal function under light stress conditions, chloroplasts have developed multiple repair and protection systems. The induction of specific light stress proteins, the ELIPs (for early light-induced proteins) can be considered to be part of these protective responses. The accumulation of ELIPs under light stress conditions is correlated with the photoinactivation of PSII, degradation of the Dl-protein of PSII reaction centre and changes in the level of pigments. Futhermore, the accumulation of ELIPs in the thylakoids is strictly controlled by the pigment content, especially by chlorophylls. Isolation of ELIPs in a native form and analysis of pigments bound to these proteins revealed that ELIPs can bind chlorophyll a and lutein. These data indicate that ELIPs might represent unique chlorophyll-binding proteins which have a transient function(s) during light stress. A transient 'pigment-carrier' function is postulated for ELIPs.  相似文献

Although it is generally recognised that UV radiation (UVR) can induce suppression of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in human subjects, most protocols to date have not tested the effect of low daily doses of solar simulated radiation (SSR). In the present study, healthy individuals, divided into four groups each consisting of approximately 34 subjects, were whole-body irradiated with 1.2 standard erythema doses of SSR for 2, 10 or 30 consecutive days, or were unirradiated. They were sensitised with diphenylocyclopropenone (DPCP) on one exposed body site 24 h after the final UVR. The occurrence and severity of the primary allergic response were noted, and both parameters were shown to be significantly lowered in the group irradiated for 30 days compared with the unirradiated group. Elicitation of CHS was undertaken 3 weeks after the sensitisation, using a range of concentrations of DPCP on a UV-protected body site. The extent of the CHS at 48 h was assessed by the clinical score, by an erythema meter and by histological examination of a biopsy taken from the site challenged with one selected concentration of DPCP. Although erythema and pigmentation did not differ between the groups, a significant negative correlation was found between the clinical CHS score and the number of days of UV exposure, at the lowest challenge dose of DPCP. In addition a significant negative correlation was revealed between the intensity of spongiosis (intraepidermal oedema and vesicles, as evaluated by histology) and the number of days of UV exposure. Thus small daily doses of SSR induce suppression of CHS in human subjects and the effect is cumulative, indicating that there is no adaptation to the immunomodulating effects of UVR, at least over the test period of 30 days.  相似文献

The drivers of plant richness at fine spatial scales in steppe ecosystems are still not sufficiently understood. Our main research questions were: (i) How rich in plant species are the natural steppes of Southern Siberia compared to natural and semi-natural grasslands in other regions of the Palaearctic? (ii) What are the main environmental drivers of the diversity patterns in these steppes? (iii) What are the diversity–environment relationships and do they vary between spatial scales and among different taxonomic groups? We sampled the steppe vegetation (vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens) in Khakassia (Russia) with 39 nested-plot series (0.0001–100-m2 plot size) and 54 additional 10-m2 quadrats across the regional range of steppe types and measured various environmental variables. We measured β-diversity using z-values of power-law species–area relationships. GLM analyses were performed to assess the importance of environmental variables as predictors of species richness and z-value. Khakassian steppes showed both high α- and β-diversity. We found significant scale dependence for the z-values, which had their highest values at small spatial scales and then decreased exponentially. Total species richness was controlled predominantly by heat load index, mean annual precipitation, humus content and soil skeleton content. The positive role of soil pH was evident only for vascular plant species richness. Similar to other studies, we found that the importance of environmental factors strongly differed among taxonomic groups and across spatial scales, thus highlighting the need to study more than one taxon and more than one plot size to get a reliable picture.  相似文献

Steppe is among the most endangered biomes of the world, especially in Eastern Europe, where more than 90 % of original steppes have been destroyed due to conversion into croplands, afforestation and other human activities. Currently, steppe vegetation is often restricted to places unsuitable for ploughing, such as ancient burial mounds called kurgans. The aim of our study was to collect and synthesise existing knowledge on kurgans by a review of research papers and grey literature. The proportion of kurgans covered by steppe vegetation increases from west to east and from lowlands to uplands. Despite their small size, kurgans act as biodiversity hotspots and harbour many red-listed species. High overall species richness and a high proportion of grassland specialists are maintained by a pronounced fine-scale environmental heterogeneity. The main factors threatening the biodiversity of kurgans are intensified agriculture and construction works. We conclude that kurgans can play a crucial role in preserving steppe vegetation, especially in intensively used agricultural landscapes in the western part of the steppe zone. Despite the vital role of kurgans in sustaining steppe vegetation, we identified serious knowledge gaps on their distribution, vegetation, flora and fauna and their potential role in steppe restoration.  相似文献

Background

It is hypothesised that individuals with knowledge of their genetic risk are more likely to make health-promoting dietary and lifestyle changes. The present study aims to test this hypothesis using data from the Food4Me study. This was a 6-month Internet-based randomised controlled trial conducted across seven centres in Europe where individuals received either general healthy eating advice or varying levels of personalised nutrition advice. Participants who received genotype-based personalised advice were informed whether they had the risk (CT/TT) (n?=?178) or non-risk (CC) (n?=?141) alleles of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene in relation to cardiovascular health and the importance of a sufficient intake of folate. General linear model analysis was used to assess changes in folate intake between the MTHFR risk, MTHFR non-risk and control groups from baseline to month 6 of the intervention.

Results

There were no differences between the groups for age, gender or BMI. However, there was a significant difference in country distribution between the groups (p?=?0.010). Baseline folate intakes were 412?±?172, 391?±?190 and 410?±?186 μg per 10 MJ for the risk, non-risk and control groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the three groups in terms of changes in folate intakes from baseline to month 6. Similarly, there were no changes in reported intake of food groups high in folate.

Conclusions

These results suggest that knowledge of MTHFR 677C?→?T genotype did not improve folate intake in participants with the risk variant compared with those with the non-risk variant.

Tribenuron-methyl is the active substance of the herbicide used for weed control in crops. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the metabolic response of seeds, seedlings and leaves of Centaurea cyanus L., depending on the degree of resistance to tribenuron-methyl. Changes in the values of selected biochemical and physiological parameters (germination index, chemical composition, photochemical efficiency of photosystem II and the emission spectra of blue-green fluorescence) presented herein make it possible to determine the differences between cornflower biotypes with various types of resistance to the tested herbicide. Moreover, differences in the chemical composition of dry seeds between biotypes susceptible and resistant to tribenuron-methyl were observed before using the herbicide. The degree of resistance to the herbicide—resistant or susceptible, but not the types of this resistance-mutational or metabolic, can be distinguished on the basis of the presented parameters. These findings allow for early diagnosis of the resistance of cornflower to tribenuron-methyl. Additionally, we suggest that the described parameters might be used as physiochemical markers for early estimation of weed resistance to various types of herbicide. The presented conclusions are especially important for agricultural practice.  相似文献

The existence of a series of neutral triatomic metal oxides MON and their corresponding cations MON + (M = Be, Mg, Ca; N = Li, Na, K) was postulated and verified theoretically using ab initio methods at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(3df)//MP2/6-311+G(3df) level of theory. The calculations revealed that the vertical ionization potentials (IPs) of the MON radicals (calculated using the outer-valence Green’s function technique (OVGF) with the 6-311+G(3df) basis set) were ca. 2–3 eV smaller than the IPs of the corresponding MO and NO systems or that of the isolated M atom. Population analysis of the neutral triatomic MON molecules and their corresponding MO counterparts indicated that the attachment of an alkali metal atom to any oxide MO (BeO, MgO, CaO) reverses its polarity, which manifests itself as the redirection of the dipole moment vector.  相似文献
