Acanthocephalans have evolved a hooked proboscis and some taxa have trunk spines to attach to their definitive hosts. These structures are generated before being used, thus a key question is how investment in attachment could optimally be allocated through the ontogeny. The number and arrangement of hooks and spines are never modified in the definitive host, but it is unclear whether these structures grow during adult development. A comparison of the size of trunk spines between cystacanths and adults of Corynosoma cetaceum and C. australe indicated that spines grow in both species, but only in females, which also had significantly larger spines than males. This sexual dimorphism did not result from pure allometry because the body of females was smaller, and did not grow more than that of males. However, having a longer lifespan, females would need to withstand the extreme flow conditions prevailing in marine mammals for longer, inducing different investment and development schedules for spines. Patterns of spine growth also differed between species: fore-trunk spines grew in both species, but hind-trunk spines did only in C. cetaceum. In conclusion, investment strategies on attachment may differ, not only between congeneric species of acanthocephalan, but also between sexes of the same species.  相似文献

We evaluate the conservation status and threats faced by sea turtle nesting populations at Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea (Central Africa). Beaches were monitored to obtain a detailed sea turtle nest census and, where possible, tagging of adult females was undertaken. Four sea turtle species were found nesting in the area: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata); with the former two species nesting in regionally important numbers. Nesting activity was concentrated between November and February, with a peak in December–January. Tagging and recapture of green turtles in two consecutive seasons suggested an estimated 560 (interquartile range: 420–1,681) and 414 (interquartile range: 190–1,255) nesting females in the area, respectively. Estimated numbers of nesting leatherbacks ranged from 123 to 215 and 243 to 293 in the first and second season, respectively. The other two species were less abundant (olive ridley: 19–29 and 28–43; hawksbill: 4–10 and 2 turtles). Data were compared with more recent surveys in the area and contextualised with information on human related threats. Despite the size of nesting stocks, ongoing permitted and illegal take of adult turtles at the nesting site constitutes a serious threat for these breeding aggregations. Additionally, tag returns from throughout the Gulf of Guinea suggest that the level of take in regional fisheries may also be a major threat.  相似文献

In this study, we provide new information about the habitats selected by the blood fluke Paradeontacylix kampachi in the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili based on an exhaustive anatomical examination. From May to October 1998, 21 fish of the 0+ age class were collected from tanks of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in Puerto de Mazarrón, Spain, for parasitological analysis. Individuals of P. kampachi were found in 17 of the 21 fish analysed (mean intensity +/- SD: 13.6 +/- 16.6; median: 6). Worms occurred in the girdles, cephalic kidney, sinus venosus, kidney and branchial arteries. A Friedman test with a post-hoc contrast revealed a significantly higher number of worms in the girdles when compared with the other sites, suggesting this may be the main habitat for P. kampachi. This location had never been reported as a habitat for any species of Paradeontacylix, probably because it had not been examined before. Girdles should be routinely examined to estimate the actual intensity of infection and to maximize the likelihood of finding this species of digenean.  相似文献

The stomachs and intestines of 9 Commerson's dolphins incidentally caught in trawl nets in central Patagonia and 23 stranded on beaches in Tierra del Fuego were surveyed for helminth parasites. A total of 267 individuals belonging to 4 species of parasites (1 nematode, 3 digeneans) were found in the dolphins from the first area: Anisakis sp. (larvae type 1 = A. simplex), Braunina cordiformis, Hadwenius sp. and Pholeter gastrophilus. In the Tierra del Fuego dolphins, 142 specimens belonging to 3 species (2 nematodes, 1 digenean, 1 cestode) were found: A. simplex, Hadwenius sp. and Strobilocephalus triangularis. Only 2 of the helminth species were shared in the 2 study areas, A. simplex and Hadwenius sp., and both were more common in central Patagonia. Among the species, A. simplex was most prevalent and abundant in both study areas. In Tierra del Fuego, adults of A. simplex appeared in only 1 host. Hadwenius sp., P. gastrophilus and S. triangularis are new host records for Commerson's dolphin. Species diversity and species richness were low in both study areas. Helminth communities were more diverse in central Patagonia (t = 1.97, df = 258, p < 0.05) and species richness was higher in central Patagonia (S = 4). No differences in diversity were observed between females and males of central Patagonia (t = 1.97, df = 139, p < 0.05) and between females of central Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. The results may suggest some differences in habitat use, diet and sex between Commerson's dolphin populations in the 2 study areas.  相似文献

Tetraphyllidean plerocercoids have occasionally been reported in marine mammals, but they have rarely been described in detail, and the ecological significance of these infections is unclear. We described plerocercoids collected from the mucosa of the terminal colon and rectum, the anal crypts, and the hepatopancreatic ducts of 7 striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, 1 Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris, and 3 Risso's dolphins Grampus griseus from the Spanish Mediterranean. We also examined undescribed plerocercoids from 3 cetacean species from the Atlantic and the Pacific. All plerocercoids had a lanceolate body, and a scolex with an apical sucker and 4 sessile monolocular bothridia. The bothridia had free posterior edges and an accessory sucker at their anterior end. Under light microscopy, the bothridia of some Mediterranean specimens looked bilocular without accessory suckers, but a true accessory sucker was observed in histological sections. A principal component analysis revealed 2 stable clusters of specimens along the first principal component regardless of host species. These "large" and "small" morphotypes are thought to represent early migratory stages of Phyllobothrium delphini and Monorygma grimaldii. The similarity in scolex morphology, the observation of plerocercoids buried in intestinal regions close to the sites where M. grimaldii and P. delphini occur, and the coexistence of all larval forms in the same individual hosts would support this hypothesis. Future molecular analysis may confirm it.  相似文献

Parasitological investigations were carried out on harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena originating from 3 different areas: the German North Sea (28), the German Baltic (18) and Norwegian waters (22). The individuals were bycaught in gill-nets or found stranded during the period 1997 to 2000. A total of 7 species of parasites was identified from the investigated organs. These originated mainly from the respiratory tract and comprised 1 ascaridoid nematode (Anisakis simplex), 4 pseudaliid nematodes (Pseudalius inflexus, Torynurus convolutus, Halocercus invaginatus, Stenurus minor) and 2 trematodes (Campula oblonga, Pholeter gastrophilus). This is the first geographic record of H. invaginatus from German waters. Differences were found in the severity of the parasitic infection between stranded and bycaught animals as well as between porpoises from different areas. A correlation was shown between parasitic infection and observed lesions.  相似文献

Patterns of parasite load and aggregation of the bird trematode Cardiocephaloides longicollis in its main intermediate host in the Mediterranean, the annular sea bream, Diplodus annularis, were studied in a large sample collected off Valencia (Spain) and are discussed within the context of the parasite induced host mortality hypothesis. The metacercariae were located within large composite cysts of host origin in the ventricles of the optic lobes of the cerebrum. A weak immunological response was detected in older fish, which was significantly associated with the total parasite load. Although the mean abundance of C. longicollis showed a tendency to increase with host size, the infection levels were generally homogeneous with a noticeable plateauing in the intermediate size classes. The distribution of the metacercariae was aggregated and agreed with the negative binomial distribution. There was a marked decline in parasite aggregation in the largest size-class, suggesting parasite-induced host mortality in the oldest fish possibly due to predation by large non-host fish predators. On the other hand, levelling off of abundance and decrease in heterogeneity of parasite distribution within the intermediate age cohort could indicate that these sizes are being rapidly and/or constantly removed from the host population due to by-catch fishing. The overall high infection levels and the continuous recruitment across age cohorts provides evidence that an enhanced parasite transmission is taking place in the Gulf of Valencia due to increased spatial overlap of the hosts involved in the life cycle. We suggest a human-induced facilitation of the digenean life cycle due to the fact that gulls in the area feed extensively on discards, thus indicating the possibility of an unforeseen effect of fishing practices in a marine littoral system.  相似文献

Ascarophis valentina n. sp. is described from Mullus surmuletus off the Valencian coast of Spain on the basis of both light and scanning electron microscopy. It can be distinguished from the other members of the genus by the length of the left (long) spicule of the males and by egg morphology. An updated grouping of the species of Ascarophis considered valid is provided with respect to these characters. The new species resembles Ascarophis capelanus, belonging to the group of species possessing eggs with a single polar knob with filaments, but is distinguished by the size of the body, the length of the esophagus (especially in relation to body length), the position of the vulva, and the size of the left spicule. The new species also shows substantial morphological differences compared with the 3 species, Ascarophis mullusi, Ascarophis upenei, and Ascarophis parupenei, previously described from mullid hosts.  相似文献

Abundance-occupancy and abundance-variance relationships are two of the most general macroecological patterns capturing essential fundamentals of the structuring of species distributions and are widely documented for free-living animal and plant species populations at different spatial scales. However, empirical data for parasites have been gathered using appropriate sampling designs only recently. We performed analyses across species of the variation in infection parameters and patterns of aggregation of the most widespread parasites in the marine sparid fish Boops boops across seven localities of two marine biogeographical regions, the North East Atlantic and the Mediterranean. We used a large dataset of multiple population samples replicated over time for 20 parasite species and carried out assessments both intraspecifically and interspecifically, across taxonomic and ecological groupings. This taxonomically diverse complex of species representing five major metazoan higher taxa with differing transmission ecologies allowed us to assess the effect of taxonomic and ecological determinants on the abundance-occupancy and abundance-variance relationships in the model marine host-parasite system. The results revealed that: (i) a power function, relating spatial variance to mean abundance, represents a suitable model for the spatial distribution of the species; (ii) prevalence, abundance and the degree of spatial heterogeneity are true species characteristics and differ consistently between higher level taxonomic groupings; (iii) infection parameters and abundance-variance relationship are dependent on host specificity and regional distribution patterns of the parasites; and (iv) the observed infection parameters agree well with predictions from the epidemiological negative binomial abundance-occupancy model built on parameters of Taylor's power law both within and across species.  相似文献
