Fire may act as a selective force on plants both through its direct effects by killing or wounding susceptible individuals and through its effect on the environment: the post-fire environment may select specific physiological traits or life histories. We used phylogenetic independent contrasts to test the hypothesis that fire has selected for correlated evolution among alternative suites of traits in pines: a survival/avoidance suite characterized by thick bark, height, and self-pruning of dead branches; and a fire-embracing strategy in which plants invest little into survival, exhibit traits which enhance flammability, and use fire as a means to cue seedling establishment to the post-fire environment through serotinous cones. We created a set of alternative 'supertree' phylogenies for the genus Pinus from published sources. Using these alternative phylogenies, published ecological data for 38 pine species, and newly collected morphological data, we demonstrate that much variation in trait evolution occurs along a fire-surviving/fire-embracing axis. Pines vary in their susceptibility to ignition since a tree that retains dead branches is more likely to carry a fire into the canopy than a tree that self-prunes. The evolution of increased flammability may have altered evolutionary trajectories prompting an evolutionary switch from a fire-surviving to a fire-embracing life history. Evolutionary diversification of a phenotypic trait reflects the tempo and mode of trait evolution, as well as the phylogenetic topology and branch lengths. Comparisons of trait variance between sister groups provide a powerful approach to test for differences in rates of diversification, controlling for differences in clade age. We used simulation analyses under constant rate Brownian motion to develop phylogenetically based F-tests of the ratio of trait variances between sister groups. Random phylogenies were used for a generalized evolutionary null model, so that detailed internal phylogenies are not required, and both gradual and speciational models of evolution were considered. In general, phylogenetically structured tests were more conservative than corresponding parametric statistics (i.e., larger variance ratios are required to achieve significance). The only exception was for comparisons under a speciational evolutionary model when the group with higher variance has very low sample size (number of species). The methods were applied to a large data set on seed size for 1976 species of California flowering plants. Seven of 37 sister-group comparisons were significant for the phylogenetically structured tests (compared to 12 of 37 for the parametric F-test). Groups with higher diversification of seed size generally had a greater diversity of fruit types, life form, or life history as well. The F-test for trait variances provides a simple, phylogenetically structured approach to test for differences in rates of phenotypic diversification and could also provide a valuable tool in the study of adaptive radiations. 相似文献

Proton transport on water wires, of interest for many problems in membrane biology, is analyzed in side-chain analogs of gramicidin A channels. In symmetrical 0.1 N HCl solutions, fluorination of channel Trp(11), Trp-(13), or Trp(15) side chains is found to inhibit proton transport, and replacement of one or more Trps with Phe enhances proton transport, the opposite of the effects on K(+) transport in lecithin bilayers. The current-voltage relations are superlinear, indicating that some membrane field-dependent process is rate limiting. The interfacial dipole effects are usually assumed to affect the rate of cation translocation across the channel. For proton conductance, however, water reorientation after proton translocation is anticipated to be rate limiting. We propose that the findings reported here are most readily interpreted as the result of dipole-dipole interactions between channel waters and polar side chains or lipid headgroups. In particular, if reorientation of the water column begins with the water nearest the channel exit, this hypothesis explains the negative impact of fluorination and the positive impact of headgroup dipole on proton conductance. 相似文献

Recombinant DNA clones have been isolated that contain 80 kb of the
beta-globin complex from the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus.
Comparisons of this complex with that from the laboratory mouse, Mus
domesticus (with an order 5'-Hbby, Hbb-bhO, Hbb-bhl, Hbb-bh2, Hbb-bh3,
Hbb-bl, Hbb-b2 3') highlight organizational trends in the beta-globin
complex since the two species diverged. Unlike other mammals studied thus
far, the deer mouse possesses three adult genes. Partial sequence analysis
indicates that each of the three adult genes is intact and hence may be
functional. Hybridization of one of the two Mus pseudogenes, Hbb-bh3, to
genomic blots from Peromyscus reveals that it has a homologous counterpart
in Peromyscus. Homologous genes to the two gamma-like Mus genes, Hbb-bhO
and Hbb-bhl, are also found in Peromyscus. The strong hybridization between
the Hbb-bhl genes and significant nucleotide similarity between the Hbb-bhO
genes suggest that both pairs are important for the ontogeny of these mice
although no known product has been identified for the Hbb-bhO genes. The
presence of Hbb-bhO and Hbb-bhl in Peromyscus suggests that the duplication
that created this related gene set occurred before the two lineages
diverged. A single gene for Hbb-y has been isolated from Peromyscus. The
adult region in Peromyscus has undergone significant divergence from the
same region in Mus, having three rather than two adult genes, the
acquisition of at least 15 kb of extra DNA relative to Mus, and possibly
the loss of the Hbb-bh2 pseudogene. The nonadult region of the complex, in
contrast, contains the same set of genes apparently distributed over the
same amount of DNA as in the Mus beta- globin complex. This observation
suggests that the embryonic region of the complex is more evolutionarily
stable than the adult region.
