The prehydrolysis liquor (PHL) of the kraft‐based dissolving pulp production process contains various amounts of hemicelluloses that can be utilized in the production of value‐added products. In this work, a new process was proposed for removing the inhibitors of PHL via employing a flocculation concept to facilitate the utilization of hemicelluloses. Lignin, lignocelluloses/cationic polymer complexes, and possibly ethanol are the main products of this process. This process has been experimentally evaluated with an industrially produced PHL and cationic polymers. The results showed that 16% of lignin, 19% of acetic acid, 43% of furfural, and insignificant amount of sugars were removed from PHL via pretreating PHL with acid and lime at pH 7. Furthermore, by adding 0.4–0.5 mg g?1 polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) or chitosan to the pretreated PHL, 12–14% acetic acid, 40–50% furfural, 5–6% monomeric sugars, and 25% oligomeric sugars were removed from the PHL. The complexes made from these components may be applied as organic fillers in various industries. Alternatively, by adding 1.2 or 1.4 mg g?1 PDADMAC or chitosan to the pretreated PHL, 30 or 35% of lignin was removed, respectively, which induced complexes that could be used as a fuel source. Background

Previous studies have examined the association between ABO blood group and the risk of some malignancies. However, no prospective cohort study to date has examined the association between ABO blood group and the risk of skin cancer.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using two large cohorts in the US, we examined ABO blood type and incidence of skin cancer, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We followed up study participants (70,650 female nurses and 24,820 male health professionals) on their diagnosis of incident skin cancer from cohort baseline (1976 in women and 1986 in men) until 2006. Study participants reported their blood type in 1996 in both cohorts. During the follow-up, 685 participants developed melanoma, 1,533 developed SCC and 19,860 developed BCC. We used Cox proportional hazards models to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of each type of skin cancer. We observed that non-O blood group (A, AB, and B combined) was significantly associated with a decreased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer overall. Compared to participants with blood group O, participants with non-O blood group had a 14% decreased risk of developing SCC (multivariable HR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.95) and a 4% decreased risk of developing BCC (multivariable HR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.93, 0.99). The decreased risk of melanoma for non-O blood group was not statistically significant (multivariable HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.05).

Conclusion/Significance

In two large independent populations, non-O blood group was associated with a decreased risk of skin cancer. The association was statistically significant for non-melanoma skin cancer. Additional studies are needed to confirm these associations and to define the mechanisms by which ABO blood type or closely linked genetic variants may influence skin cancer risk.  相似文献

Accumulating data support the view that sepsis is associated with an acquired intrinsic derangement in the ability of cells to consume O(2), a phenomenon that has been termed "cytopathic hypoxia." We sought to use an in vitro "reductionist" model system using cultured cells stimulated with proinflammatory cytokines to test the hypothesis that cytopathic hypoxia is mediated, at least in part, by depletion of intracellular levels of NAD(+)/NADH secondary to activation of the nuclear enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). We measured O(2) consumption by Caco-2 enterocytes growing on microcarrier beads after cells were incubated for 24 h under control conditions or with cytomix, a mixture of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interferon-gamma. Immunostimulated cells consumed O(2) at about one-half the rate of control cells, but this effect was largely prevented if any one of the following pharmacological agents was present during the period of incubation with cytomix: 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzene disulfonic acid, a superoxide radical anion scavenger; 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, a nitric oxide scavenger; 5,10,15,20- tetrakis-[4-sulfonatophenyl]-porphyrinato-iron[III], a peroxynitrite (ONOO(-)) decomposition catalyst; urate, an ONOO(-) scavenger; 3-aminobenzamide, a PARP inhibitor; or N-(6-oxo-5,6-dihydrophenanthridin-2-yl)-N,N-dimethylacetamide HCl, a chemically dissimilar and more potent PARP inhibitor. The decrease in O(2) uptake induced by cytomix was associated with decreased cellular levels of NAD(+)/NADH. The decrease in cellular NAD(+)/NADH content and the decrease in O(2) uptake induced by cytomix were completely abrogated if liposome-encapsulated NAD(+) was added to the cultures during immunostimulation. Empty liposomes also increased O(2) uptake by immunostimulated Caco-2 cells, but much less effectively than liposomes containing NAD(+). These data are consistent with the view that enterocytes exposed to proinflammatory cytokines consume less O(2) due to NAD(+)/NADH depletion secondary to activation of PARP by ONOO(-) or other oxidants.  相似文献

Polyester textiles have been applied in numerous industrial applications. Polyester fibers are characterized with being excellent insulators to electricity, having excellent flexural and impact strength, ease of manufacture, low-cost, as well as having resistance to moisture and chemicals. However, polyester fibers cannot be stained due to the absence of active dyeing sites on the surface of the fibrous structure. Thus, polyester cannot be dyed after it has been extruded. Herein, we report the development of novel-colored polyester fabrics using plasma-assisted dyeing and anthocyanin natural probe for determination of ammonia that may cause severe harmful effects to human organs and even death. Anthocyanin was extracted from red cabbage and characterized. The water-soluble anthocyanin was fastened to polyester fibers by mordant (potash alum) to generate anthocyanin–mordant coordinative complex nanoparticles. Polyester can be treated with thin layer of anthocyanin probe after activation with plasma. The results showed excellent colorfastness, ultraviolet blocking, and antibacterial performance of the anthocyanin-dyed polyester (APET) fibers. The APET fibers showed great potential for developing a portable colorimetric device for an on-site detection of ammonia. APET displayed a detection limit of aqueous ammonia in the range of 25–200 ppb, displaying a change in color from purple (542 nm) to white (387 nm).  相似文献

Background

Several regions of the genome show pleiotropic associations with multiple cancers. We sought to evaluate whether 181 single-nucleotide polymorphisms previously associated with various cancers in genome-wide association studies were also associated with melanoma risk.

Methods

We evaluated 2,131 melanoma cases and 20,353 controls from three studies in the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) study (EAGLE-BioVU, MEC, WHI) and two collaborating studies (HPFS, NHS). Overall and sex-stratified analyses were performed across studies.

Results

We observed statistically significant associations with melanoma for two lung cancer SNPs in the TERT-CLPTM1L locus (Bonferroni-corrected p<2.8x10-4), replicating known pleiotropic effects at this locus. In sex-stratified analyses, we also observed a potential male-specific association between prostate cancer risk variant rs12418451 and melanoma risk (OR=1.22, p=8.0x10-4). No other variants in our study were associated with melanoma after multiple comparisons adjustment (p>2.8e-4).

Conclusions

We provide confirmatory evidence of pleiotropic associations with melanoma for two SNPs previously associated with lung cancer, and provide suggestive evidence for a male-specific association with melanoma for prostate cancer variant rs12418451. This SNP is located near TPCN2, an ion transport gene containing SNPs which have been previously associated with hair pigmentation but not melanoma risk. Previous evidence provides biological plausibility for this association, and suggests a complex interplay between ion transport, pigmentation, and melanoma risk that may vary by sex. If confirmed, these pleiotropic relationships may help elucidate shared molecular pathways between cancers and related phenotypes.  相似文献
