Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) processes are energy intense systems as they are mainly run under continuous constant current supply mode. In this study, pulsed electrokinetic remediation (PEKR) technique was employed for the removal of Cd, Hg and Cr from mixed contaminated natural clay and bentonite soils. The effects of voltage gradient, pulse duty cycle and bentonite/clay ratio on the simultaneous removal efficiencies of the heavy metals and specific energy consumption were investigated. Fifteen (15) PEKR experiments were conducted according to Box–Behnken design (BBD) with each experiment allowed to continuously run for 21 days. Increase in the proportion of the bentonite significantly decreased the removal efficiency of the heavy metals while having insignificant effect on the energy consumption. Conversely, increase in both voltage gradient and pulse duty cycle increased the heavy metals removal efficiencies, though at the expense of increase in energy consumption due to combine effects of increase in the soil electrical conductivity, amount of current needed to sustain the applied voltage gradient as well as the raise in the soil pH. The maximum achievable removal efficiencies for Cd, Hg and Cr were 21.87, 78.06 and 89.64% respectively. The specific energy consumption significantly increased from the range of 91.67–154.17 kwh/m3 to 1700–2441.67 kwh/m3 as a result of combined effect of increasing voltage gradient and pulse duty cycle. This demonstrated that effective PEKR could be achieved with significance reduction in the energy consumption via appropriate selection of pulse duty and voltage gradient for clay soils of different proportion of montmorillonite.  相似文献

BackgroundHuman brucellosis is a preventable zoonoses that may become persistent, causing, if left untreated, severe localized disease. Occupational exposure to infected animals or animal products and consumption of fresh contaminated dairy are main risk factors.MethodsOne hundred farmworkers employed at two cattle farms one in Khartoum North and one in Omdurman were screened for the presence of specific antibodies and seropositive workers were invited to donate a blood sample for blood culture. Molecular typing was used to characterize Brucella isolates.ResultsTen percent of farmworkers tested seropositive and while Brucella melitensis biovar 1 was isolated from the blood of three individuals, an isolate identical to the B. abortus S19 vaccine strain was isolated from a fourth person. All four bacteremic individuals were employed as milkers and did not have obvious disease.ConclusionsThe isolation of the highly infectious pathogen B. melitensis from seropositive workers is consistent with the notion that the pathogen may persist in the blood without causing overt disease. While vaccination with strain S19 is essential for the control of bovine brucellosis the vaccine strain may be transmitted to the human population and protective measures remain important to prevent exposure also in view of the presence of B. melitensis. To create awareness for this potentially severe disease more information on the prevalence of the pathogen in different risk groups and in livestock in the Sudan is needed.  相似文献

The effects of phosphate (P) limitation, varying salinity (5–65 psu), and solid media growth conditions on the polysaccharides produced by the model diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin were determined. Sequential extraction was used to separate polymers into colloidal (CL), colloidal extracellular polymeric substances (cEPS), hot water soluble (HW), hot bicarbonate soluble (HB), and hot alkali (HA) soluble fractions. Media‐soluble polymers (CL and cEPS) were enriched in 4‐linked mannosyl, glucosyl, and galactosyl residues as well as terminal and 3‐linked xylosyl residues, whereas HW polymers consisted mainly of 3‐linked glucosyl as well as terminal and 2,4‐linked glucuronosyl residues. The HB fraction was enriched in terminal and 2‐linked rhamnosyl residues derived from the mucilage coating solubilized by this treatment. Hot alkali treatment resulted in the complete dissolution of the frustule releasing 2,3‐ and 3‐linked mannosyl residues. The fusiform morphotype predominated in standard and P‐limited cultures and cultures subjected to salinity variations, but growth on solid media resulted in an enrichment of the oval morphotype. The proportion and linkages of 15 residues, including neutral, uronic acid, and O‐methylated sugars, varied with environmental conditions. P limitation and salinity changes resulted in 1.5‐ to 2.5–fold increase in carbohydrate production, with enrichment of highly branched/substituted and terminal rhamnose, xylose, and fucose as well as O‐methylated sugars, uronic acids, and sulfate. The increased deoxy‐ and O‐methylated sugar content under unfavorable environments enhances the hydrophobicity of the polymers, whereas the anionic components may play important roles in ionic cross‐linking, suggesting that these changes could ameliorate the effects of salinity or P‐stress and that these altered polysaccharide characteristics may be useful as bioindicators for environmental stress.  相似文献

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer regions of Bemisia tabaci was used to distinguish cassava‐associated populations from other host‐associated populations. Endonuclease restriction profile analysis indicated that cassava‐associated populations from Africa represent a distinct group, with a significant level of separation into subgroups that were not linked to geographical origin. Analysis of molecular variance (amova ) revealed that a high proportion of the total genetic variation (47%) was attributable to among‐population differences within the host‐associated groups. Principal coordinate analysis supported the differentiation between the cassava and the non‐cassava group, a result which was in agreement with the cluster analysis of the restriction fragment profile. Internal transcribed spacer RFLP markers, especially SmaI, identified in this study can be used to monitor the spread of B. tabaci biotypes, especially of the more virulent biotype B that has so far not been reported in the cassava‐growing belt of Africa.  相似文献

Objectives

To provide insight into the dynamics of the shape-shifting mechanistic events associated with the opening (activation) of Lymphocyte Function Associated Antigen-1 upon allosteric modulation by an activator, ICAM Binding Enhancer-667 (IBE-667), using molecular dynamics simulation.

Results

Various parameters were used to appropriately describe and understand the sequence of events that characterized its activation across the simulation period such as residual distances, TriCα angles; as well as the dihedral angle. Our findings revealed a significant residual fluctuation and stability difference between both systems. Also, there was a synergistic coordination of the active MIDAS site by the downward pull of the α7 helix upon ligand binding, which appeared to be directly proportional to each other.

Conclusion

Allosteric binding of IBE-667, activated LFA-1 integrin as evidenced by residual motion at the MIDAS region which appears to be synergistically coordinated by the downward pull of the α7 helix.

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) populations, collected from cassava and other plants in major cassava-cultivation areas of Sub-saharan Africa and from elsewhere around the world, were studied to determine their biotype status and genetic variation. Random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) markers were used to examine the genetic structure of the populations. The dendogram obtained using the neighbour joining method (NJ) split the cassava-associated populations from the non-cassava types with a 100% bootstrap probability. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) of the RAPD fragments revealed that 63.2% of the total variation was attributable to differences among populations, while the differences among groups (host) and within populations accounted for 27.1 and 9.8% respectively. Analysis of the internally transcribed spacer region I (ITS 1) of the ribosomal DNA confirmed that the cassava populations of B. tabaci populations were distinct from non-cassava populations. Experiments to establish whitefly populations on various host plants revealed that cassava-associated populations were restricted to cassava only, whereas B. tabaci from other hosts were polyphagous but did not colonize cassava. Hence, populations of B. tabaci from cassava in Africa represent a distinct group.  相似文献

Novel thermochromic and vapochromic paper substrates were prepared via screen printing with anthocyanin extract in the presence of ferrous sulfate mordant, resulting in multi-stimuli responsive colorimetric paper sheets. Environmentally friendly anthocyanin extract was obtained from red-cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) to function as spectroscopic probe in coordination with ferrous sulfate mordant. Pink anthocyanin/resin nanocomposite films immobilized onto paper surface were developed by well-dispersion of anthocyanin extract as a colorimetric probe in a binding agent without agglomeration. As demonstrated by CIE colorimetric studies, the pink (λmax = 418 nm) film deposited onto paper surface turns greenish-yellow (λmax = 552 nm) upon heating from 25 to 75°C, demonstrating new thermochromic film for anti-counterfeiting applications. The thermochromic effects were investigated at different concentrations of the anthocyanin extract. Upon exposure to ammonia gas, the color of the anthocyanin-printed sheets changes rapidly from pink to greenish-yellow, and then immediately returns to pink after taking the gaseous ammonia stimulus away, demonstrating vapochromic effect. The current sensor strip showed a detection limit for ammonia gas in the range 50–300 ppm. Both thermochromism and vapochromism showed high reversibility without fatigue. In addition to studying the rheological properties of the prepared composites, the morphological and mechanical properties of the printed cellulose substrates were also studied.  相似文献

Liquidambar orientalis Mill., commonly called the Anatolian sweetgum or Sigla tree, is endemic to southwestern Turkey. It has been historically significant in traditional medicine. In our research, we delved into the therapeutic attributes of its oil, emphasizing its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor properties. The primary chemical constituent of the gum is styrene, accounting for 78.5 %. The gum demonstrated antioxidant capabilities in several assays, including in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It displayed bactericidal actions against various gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and gram-negative strains, including Escherichia coli. Additionally, the oil showcased potent antitumor effects against breast (MDA-MB-231), lung (A549), and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines. These effects were found to be both time- and dose-dependent. L. orientalis Mill. oil showed the best antitumor activity against breast, lung, and prostate cancer cell lines after the 24 h and 48 h treatment. Its oil might induce autophagy in the PC3 prostate cancer cell line, whereas its cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 and A549 cancer cell lines might not be correlated with autophagy or apoptosis pathways. In conclusion, the oil from the Sigla tree offers promising therapeutic potential and warrants further exploration.  相似文献
