The present study was conducted to elaborate vegetation composition structure to analyze role of edaphic and topographic factors on plant species distribution and community formation during 2013–14. A mixture of quadrat and transect methods were used. The size of quadrat for trees shrubs and herbs were 10 × 5, 5 × 2, 1 × 1 meter square respectively. Different phytosociological attribute were measured at each station. Primary results reported 123 plant species belong to 46 families. Asteraceae and Lamiaceae were dominant families with 8 species each. PCORD version 5 were used for Cluster and Two Way Cluster Analyses that initiated 4 plant communities within elevation range of 529–700 m from sea level. Indicator species analyses (ISA) were used to identify indicator species of each community. CANOCO Software (version 4.5) was used to measure the influence of edaphic and topographic variables on species composition, diversity and community formation. Whereas Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to measure the effect of environmental variables which showed elevation and aspect were the stronger environmental variable among topographic and CaCO3 contents, electric conductivity, soil pH were the stronger edaphic factors in determination of vegetation and communities of the Bheer Hills. Grazing pressure was one of the main anthropogenic factors in this regard.  相似文献

Conservation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is relatively young, yet have made considerable gains in conservation through strategic proclamation and reintroductions. Changes in land use, illegal hunting and competition with domestic stock has decimated the native ungulates, meaning that the survival of the native ungulate species is now completely dependent on protected area network. The challenge is to sustain this network to make meaningful conservation impact into the future. We review the status of ungulate conservation in Saudi Arabia and highlight that the conservation strategy is well developed. The major challenge faced in conservation in Saudi Arabia now is to implement what has been sanctioned.  相似文献

Water scarcity is a major limiting factor for crop productivity in arid and semi-arid areas. Grafting elite commercial cultivars onto selected vigorous rootstocks is considered as a useful strategy to alleviate the impact of environmental stresses. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using grafting to improve fruit yield and quality of cucumber under water stress conditions. Alosama F1 cucumber cultivar (Cucumis sativus L.) was grafted onto Affyne (Cucumis sativus L.) and Shintoza A90 (Cucurbitamaxima × C. moschata) rootstocks. Non-grafted plants were used as control. All genotypes were grown under three surface drip irrigation regimes: 50%, 75% and 100% of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc), which represent high-water stress, moderate-water stress and non-water stress conditions, respectively. Yield and fruit quality traits were analyzed and assessed. In comparison to the non-grafted plants, the best grafting treatment under water stress was Alosama F1 grafted onto Shintoza A90 rootstock. It had an overall improved yield and fruit quality under water stress owing to an increase in the total fruit yield by 27%, from 4.815 kg plant?1 in non-grafted treatment to 6.149 kg plant?1 in grafted treatment under moderate -water stress, total soluble solid contents (13%), titratable acidity (39%) and vitamin C (33%). The soil water contents were low in soil surface and increase gradually with soil depth, while salt distribution showed an adverse trend. The positive effects of grafting on plant growth, productivity, and water use efficiency support this strategy as an useful tool for improving water stress tolerance in greenhouse grown cucumber in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Many developmental and environmental risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are similar to those for susceptibility to respiratory tract infection, and toxigenic bacteria have been implicated in some SIDS cases. We assessed nasopharyngeal flora of healthy infants in relation to risk factors to determine which species best lit the mathematical model proposed for the common bacterial toxin hypothesis and if these findings complemented results obtained from SIDS cases which occurred during the period of the survey. Longitudinal studies were carried out between April 1993 and March 1996 on 253 healthy infants and their mothers. 150 from a multiply deprived area, 103 from an affluent area. Concurrent SIDS infants (37) were screened for nasopharyngeal flora. Among healthy infants < or = 3 months of age, the predominant isolate was Staphylococcus aureus 57% compared with 86% for SIDS infants in that age range (P< 0.02). There were significant associations between isolation of different species from both mother and baby but no association between isolation of any species with: area of residence: parental smoking habits; breast or bottle feeding; symptoms of viral infection: seasonality. We conclude that S. aureus fits the mathematical model for SIDS. Both staphylococci and/or their toxins were identified in a significant proportion of SIDS cases. Isolation of staphylococci from healthy infants was associated with the 2-4-month age range, a risk factor consistently found in all epidemiological studies of SIDS. This might reflect the developmental stage in which 80-90% of infants express the Lewis(a) antigen which we have shown to be one of the receptors for S. aureus.  相似文献

This work addresses the kinetic analysis of the interaction of tacrine with bovine retina acetylcholinesterase (AChE, E.C. 3.1.1.7). It was found that the tacrine effect was reversible in nature. Tacrine inhibited bovine retinal AChE activity in a concentration-dependent manner; IC50 was found to be 8.07 nM. The Michaelis-Menten constant (Ka) for the hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine iodide (ASCh) by AChE was 0.061 mM in the control system, and this value was increased by 54–67% in the tacrine-treated systems. The Vmax was 0.701 μ mole/min per milligram protein for the control system, but it was decreased by 26–69% in the tacrine-treated systems. The Lineweaver–Burk plot, Dixon plot, and their secondary replots indicated that the nature of the inhibition was of the partial mixed type, that is, a mixture of competitive and noncompetitive inhibition. We have designed this study to determine various kinetic parameters of camel retinal membrane‐bound acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) inhibition by carbamate insecticide lannate [methyl N‐{{(methylamino)carbonyl}oxy} ethanimidothioate]. All these kinetic constants were derived by simple graphical methods. The value of kinetic parameters was estimated as follows: 0.061 (μM)−1, 1.14 (μM)−1, 0.216 μM, 0.016 min−1, 0.0741 (μM min)−1, 0.746 μM, and 4.42 μM for velocity constant (Kv), new inhibition constant (Knic), dissociation constant (Kd), carbamylation rate constant (k2c), overall carbamylation rate constant (k′2 ), 50% inhibition constant (KI50), and 99% inhibition constant (KI99), respectively. These unique methods may be used to estimate such kinetic parameters for time‐dependent inhibition of enzymes by variety of chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, and drugs. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A remarkably specialized parasitoid wasp of the family Scelionidae (Platygastroidea) is described and figured from mid-Cretaceous (Cenomanian) amber of the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar. Geoscelio mckellari Engel and Huang, gen. et sp. nov., is unique for its combination of a compact body, 12 antennal flagellomeres, a 1-2-2 tibial spur formula, a distinct malar sulcus, deeply impressed notauli, complete reduction of the wings, and basal crenulae on the metasomal terga and sterna, among many other features, and is placed within a separate tribe, Geoscelionini Engel and Huang, trib. nov. This is the first flightless species of Platygastroidea known from the Mesozoic, and its affinities with other Mesozoic and extant lineages are discussed.  相似文献

Introduction

In this article, we report 7 novel KRAS gene mutations discovered while retrospectively studying the prevalence and pattern of KRAS mutations in cancerous tissue obtained from 56 Saudi sporadic colorectal cancer patients from the Eastern Province.

Methods

Genomic DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded cancerous and noncancerous colorectal tissues. Successful and specific PCR products were then bi-directionally sequenced to detect exon 4 mutations while Mutector II Detection Kits were used for identifying mutations in codons 12, 13 and 61. The functional impact of the novel mutations was assessed using bioinformatics tools and molecular modeling.

Results

KRAS gene mutations were detected in the cancer tissue of 24 cases (42.85%). Of these, 11 had exon 4 mutations (19.64%). They harbored 8 different mutations all of which except two altered the KRAS protein amino acid sequence and all except one were novel as revealed by COSMIC database. The detected novel mutations were found to be somatic. One mutation is predicted to be benign. The remaining mutations are predicted to cause substantial changes in the protein structure. Of these, the Q150X nonsense mutation is the second truncating mutation to be reported in colorectal cancer in the literature.

Conclusions

Our discovery of novel exon 4 KRAS mutations that are, so far, unique to Saudi colorectal cancer patients may be attributed to environmental factors and/or racial/ethnic variations due to genetic differences. Alternatively, it may be related to paucity of clinical studies on mutations other than those in codons 12, 13, 61 and 146. Further KRAS testing on a large number of patients of various ethnicities, particularly beyond the most common hotspot alleles in exons 2 and 3 is needed to assess the prevalence and explore the exact prognostic and predictive significance of the discovered novel mutations as well as their possible role in colorectal carcinogenesis.  相似文献

A new species of cleptoparasitic bee of the genus Thyreus Panzer (Apinae: Melectini) is described and figured from northern Yemen and southwestern Saudi Arabia. Thyreus shebicus Engel, sp. n. is a relatively small species superficially similar to the widespread and polytypic species T. ramosus (Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau) and T. ramosellus (Cockerell) but more closely allied to various African forms on the basis of the male genitalia. The species is distinguished from its congeners on the basis of coloration pattern, male hind leg structure, and particularly male terminalia.  相似文献
