A method is proposed for estimating the total length of a root system from sub-samples. This method is based on the measurement
of the length and diameter of small pieces of roots, and on the measurements of the bulk density of root sub-samples. It is
assumed that roots are cylinders with a given bulk density. The length and diameter of small root pieces are measured by image
analysis. A weighted quadratic mean (W.Q.M.) root diameter is then calculated and used in estimating the root length. This
W.Q.M. diameter is defined as the real mean diameter of an equivalent single root with the same length and volume as the tested
root system. The accuracy of prediction is demonstrated for one theoretical root system. The standard deviation of estimation
can be calculated using sampling simulations. 相似文献

Influence of maize root mucilage on soil aggregate stability 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
This study was undertaken to determine the effects of root exudates on soil aggregate stability. Root mucilage was collected
from two-month old maize plants (Zea mays L.) Mucilage and glucose solutions were added at a rate of 2.45 g C kg−1 dry soil to silty clay and silt loam soils. Amended soils, placed in serum flasks, were incubated for 42 d with a drying-wetting
cycle after 21 d. Evolved CO2 was measured periodically as well as the water-stable aggregates and soluble sugar and polysaccharide content of the soil.
In mucilage-amended soils CO2 evolution started with a lag phase of 2–3 days, which was not observed in glucose-amended soils. There was then a sharp increase
in evolved CO2 up to day 7. During the second incubation period there were only small differences in evolved C between treatments. Incorporation
of mucilage in both soils resulted in a spectacular and immediate increase in soil aggregate stability. Thereafter, the percent
of water-stable aggregates quickly decreased parallel to microbial degradation. On completion of the incubation, aggregate
stability in the silty clay soil was still significantly higher in the presence of mucilage than in the control. This work
supports the assumption that freshly released mucilage is able to stick very rapidly to soil particles and may protect the
newly formed aggregates against water destruction. On the silty clay, microbial activity contributes to a stabilization of
these established organo-mineral bounds. 相似文献

- Aquatic macrophytes formed dense beds in fallow areas during the four and a half months of the flood season in all but one deepwater rice-growing location in Bangladesh; these included several types of life-form, but the fine-leaved species, Myriophyllum sp., Najas indica, Utricularia stellaris were often especially abundant. The same species grew inside deepwater rice fields, but at much lower densities. A similar contrast occurred for the algae, although deepwater rice often developed dense masses of epiphytes on aquatic roots, stems and leaf sheaths, when plants were growing in isolated, well-illuminated situations.
- Two widespread algae, Aulosira fertilissima and Scytonema mirabile, were equally successful on soil in the period prior to the arrival of floodwaters and floating on the surface of the water during the flood season. Other species common during the flood season differed from those common on soil.
- Most blue-green algae inside deepwater rice fields were heterocystous; the only species not so, but forming distinct colonies, was Aphanothece stagnina. However only non-heterocystous forms were found at one location in south Bangladesh (Phaltita) and a change from heterocystous to non-heterocystous forms was noted at the main research site (near Sonargaon) during late September in at least one year. The water column at the former was almost entirely anoxic, while the change at the latter occurred at a time when the water sometimes became anoxic during the night. It is suggested that differences in ability to tolerate anoxic periods may be a key factor in determining the success of the algal and vascular plant species in the different micro-habitats within these DWR-growing areas.
- Although diatoms were quantitatively only a minor component of the algal biomass, they became more frequent later in the season when the water became microaerobic or anoxic for part of the day. Navicula confervacea was overall the most abundant species at the two main research locations.

Six of the 13 Aeromonas hydrophila, 1 of 10 A. shigelloides, and none of 10 A. salmonicida were found to be psychrophiles. All of the rest of the strains were mesophiles. The mu values (temperature characteristics) could not be used to distinguish psychrophiles from mesophiles. 相似文献

Summary Experiments on the survival ofM. phaseoli on cucurbit root pieces were carried out. The sclerotia ofM. phaseoli were almost unaffected by 10 months dry storage in the laboratory. Under dry to moderately moist soil conditions it survived for 2 months with little loss of viability. In wet soils however, the buried root pieces were colonized by other soil microorganisms which prevented the growth ofM. phaseoli. 相似文献

Summary By means of hay infusion-Fe(OH)3–MnCO3 enrichment cultures, 11 pure strains of the filamentous, sheathed bacterium, Sphaerotilus discophorus were isolated from streams, rivers and lakes. The morphology of the colonies, filaments and cells are shown in a series of photographs. The strains grew well in dilute organic media but not in many of the common bacteriological media. All strains required thiamin and biotin for growth. Glucose, mannitol, salicin, raffinose, glycerol and other compounds were suitable energy sources and peptone and casein hydrolysate were satisfactory nitrogen sources for growth. The temperature range for growth was 5–35°C and the pH range 6.0–8.6.The sudanophilic granules of S. discophorus are composed of poly--hydroxybutyric acid which may be as much as 40% of the dry weight of the cells. Growth with iron and manganese salts results in extensive deposition of oxides on these metals on the filaments. Chemical analyses of 60 hr cultures showed that the iron content of the filaments ranged from 4.25–7.10% and manganese from 1.12–1.43%, calculated on a dry weight basis. Resting cell suspensions oxidized a variety of sugars, sugar alcohols, amino acids and other compounds and concomitantly assimilated about 90% of these substrates. The properties of S. discophorus are compared with those of S. natans.Based in part on a thesis presented by the senior author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Washington State University, 1963. 相似文献

We have compared regeneration proficiency for cultured explants from different tissues of different ecotypes ofArabidopsis thaliana. Proficiency varies widely with both tissue and ecotype, and is highest when the flux of light during regeneration is low. Analysis of F1 hybrids suggests that high proficiency is dominant to low proficiency. 相似文献
